    Self Sabotage

When I first open up MFP to post my weight, I add what I know I will eat during the day. That always includes a desert. Usually some kind of home made fat free sugar free pudding with cool whip. Maybe chocolate chips or peanut butter as well. Then I see how many calories I have left, and go from there. I also eat back some of my exercise calories, and this adds some comfort room for snacks. I am a desert addict, and this is a way I can have it, and still stay on plan. I have made so many other changes, this is one I don't want to change!

http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/261424-the-52-diet-book-free/ Eat your regular plan on feast days... I eat between 1200-1500 depending on exercise (I eat some of my exercise calories back) "fast" two days a week. many choose mon-ths, but choose whats best for you, you must not have them on days next to each other. Fast day is around 500 calories for women. I eat around 550 (according to the 5:2 site that is right for me) The point is to have 12-16 hours of no eating now and then. Then reduced calorie intake a couple of days a week. Example, I have a Protein drink/coffee/tea in the am through lunch, and then have a pretty regular dinner, around 350-450 cals. Try and get 50 gms protein on fast days, then veggies. Some skip Breakfast, some eat three small meals, its up to you. If you have to miss a fast day, just pick another day to do it. Its pretty easy. It is not first of all a weight loss plan, it is a longevity plan, but weight loss is a side effect. I lost my last 20 pounds on it. I am stalled out right now, but figure that will change eventually! There are a couple of 5:2 posts in the vets section, post there with more questions and Im sure I or someone else will answer your questions! best of luck, Kim

  4. Hi all! When my weight started effecting my general health more and more, it was time to go the next step. Diets don't work (for me). I needed help! I got an appointment with the bariatric docs at my hospital and they approved me for RNY or the sleeve. I had never heard about the sleeve, so I went to work and did some research. I have AFib, and need to take aspirin, my Cardiologist would only approve a surgery that allowed me to take aspirin. I also found out that the sleeve can be scoped (RNY keeps your stomach in your abdomen, but you can't get to it with a scope) The whole foreign body thing and being accountable to dr visits for fills and such... not very appealing to me. Why was having 85%of my stomach appealing? ? Go figure. There is a long history of people needing their stomachs removed with little or no bad effects. The pyloris is in place, the stomach works pretty much like before, except less hunger hormone production. I went with the sleeve, its been 3 years, and no problems, slowly got to goal, I take aspirin every day, I can eat what I want. I did need to change my lifestyle, exercise, eat better and less, and deal with my head.... we will all need to do this to some degree or another. Best of luck!

Sar, You look fantastic! I know, when I see my "before" pics, I can hardly believe it is me. Its like a different life. and Laura, thanks for hounding Alex to close our group off from the public. I can understand why others would want to look in, but perhaps we can make a point of a 5:2 thread or two open on vets to get others interested. I would want to know about it if I was me... oh wait, I am me and I do know about it! So glad I do.... and yes, I am a nut. I'm off to Belly dance class.
  8. Didn't you know thats one of the complications from the surgery?
  9. I don't know when you had the surgery, but 48% at 5 months is great! I know I had to work on replacing my negative feelings about the speed or numbers with determination to keep on keeping on... this journey is never over. 80 pounds is above average for loss, which is around 10 pounds a month. Staying on the losing and not gaining train is ALWAYS a good thing. When is the last time you lost 80 pounds in a few months!?

Tia, that was my story too. Here is link to the BBC investigative piece that started the 5:2: http://leangainsguide.com/diet/igf-1-and-fasting/ Its about 50 something minutes long, and I found all of it interesting. The first parts show his investigation into longevity practices, and the last part shows what he came up with as a compromise... the 5:2. The page has a couple of junk popups, but its the only place I can find the video right now. It was shown on PBS not too long ago.... there is a book too, but the vid is good. Watch it, and if its something you think you might want to try, I can tell you the couple of things a few of us here have done to modify the plan for sleevers. (mainly eat less on feast days)

    Longest Stall Ever! Ugh!

OK,I can understand your frustration, but 15 pounds in 7 months is not that bad toward the end of weight loss. It sounds like you are really working it, and I would guess the exercise may be changing the composition... have you measured? Do what the ladies have recommended if your not already, weigh, measure and post on MFP. It is revealing. At 15 months, things will slow down. I was not only slowed down, but heading in the wrong direction until I started using the 5:2 method... I have slowed down again, but not before I got to about 3 pounds from goal..... Keep in mind that the average 2 year EWL for the sleeve is less than 70%. ... you are now at around 80%, you are doing great! I bet you are a lot more fit as well. The last few pounds may just take a long time to get off, but it will feel just as good when you get there!
  12. Globe, you are ahead of the game by percentages, this is a pretty average estimate of how much EWL a person has after getting the sleeve: Overall, Peterli and colleagues found that the average excessive BMI lost after 1 year was 61.5%, and then 61.1% after 2 years. By 5 years, average excessive BMI lost was 57.4%, they reported. http://www.medpagetoday.com/Endocrinology/Obesity/40490

I think I saw a post where she said she would work on it.... you were going to send her a few for her to look at or something like that? I would love it if I could have a list to refer with "stage name" real name (I feel terrible whenI forget your first names!) , town and email. If the water rises and the bridge falls in, there might still be a way to contact, and if anyone is in town, they can drop by! What do you think?

How was your 5:2 day today?

Fasting today, and of course two co-workers brought treats... home made plum pie and persimmon bread.... I had a piece of the bread... this will probably put me a little over my goal today. It was good, and made low fat etc. It was so easy to just take it and put it in my mouth! I think the cold weather does make it easier to eat for comfort. This did not ruin my day. Its just a treat and the rest of the day will be healthy and well done! (said over and over in my head)
  18. It is probably on your list already, but our "private" group has non members posting on it now, they could always read it, but posting was not allowed... is there something we can do about that? Thanks Alex, Kim Eating the 5:2 way http://www.bariatricpal.com/index.php/forum/739-eating-the-52-way/

How was your 5:2 day today?

I just answered a gal who posted on our movin and groovin page.... so outside peeps can post here now.... ALEX!!! Help! Globe! That is so unfair! I hope this can be worked around... Im glad you can get here somehow, even if it is the crazy back door! OK, lifing up now.... fasting today, planning on birdwatching on saturday with a couple of friends... will post pics of the beauty! I am solidly in an 11(junior sizing because I must dress like a teenager instead of an adult....) pant now (that must be a UK 13 if there is such a size there!) A uk14 is a us12. I am finally getting some of the things on my list done, including giving away another giant bag of clothing. Happy day now ladies!

Hi Redbean, I just saw you on MFP (Im sukielovesveggies there). This is a private goupe for vets who are using the 5:2 method, The switch going on here has so far thrown it into the general publlic, but I imagine that will change as soon as Alex gets to it. You are always welcome to look, just not post... we do admit some requests for new members, but most are well over a year out and use the 5:2 method... we are mostly here for support of that. Do friend me on MFP! And, thanks for liking my photos, getting moving has really been such a great part of this lifestyle change!

    Lapband Haters

Reading this forum, does make me wonder though how people go about choosing one method of WLS over the other....when I was going for my band, I went to see a doctor who exclusively does band surgery. That was my preference since I had known a few friends and others who had the by pass and suffered medical issues, and complications including death. Since I have met my doctor the first time, there are now other doctors in the Bariatric Practice of the hospital that perform other WLS such as the sleeve, and by pass. From what I understood from the initial meeting with my doctor was that if I was not a "candidate" for the band I would be referred to the other doctors to see if I might be a candidate for their specialty. Which makes me think that there is some standard of measure that makes someone a candidate for one surgery vs. another other the fact that we are all over weight, and I don't think it is solely based on our preference as it was in my case.....but my assumption could be wrong insofar as I have not heard or understood what the metrics consist of that makes someone a better candidate for the band vs. other WLS. Does anyone know if there is such a thing, or if surgery is undertaken based solely on the preference of the patient? Apologies if I’m rambling…I hope this made sense it’s been a rough day J -------------- Good question! -I hear about the benefits of DS ,better Diabetes reduction and quicker/more weight loss. More strict nutritional rules. -RNY to avoid GERD, better Diabetes reduction, mal-absorbtion part of weight loss process.- -Sleeve to avoid mal-absorbtion, ability to use aspirin (this is one reason I got the sleeve, I need aspirin as part of my heart health practice, my Cardio would not approve my surgery without this), can scope the whole existing tract, keep your pylorus, remove most of your Ghrelin producers, only option for Crohn's patients. Can use it as part one of the DS if you don't lose enough weight with just the sleeve. Not as good for Diabetes or GERD. -Band benefits... I would think it might be that it can be reversed and adjusted if you need to? -Don't know much about Plication..... I'm sure there are many more reasons... I really think it is partly what the Doc has experience with, My doc did mostly bands and RNY, I suspect if he had been there at my consultation, I would have ended up with the RNY... he got a new co-Doc who I did my first consult with, he gave me the choice of the sleeve or RNY, I had never heard of the sleeve, looked into it, and it just made good sense to me personally. The sleeve was pretty new as a stan alone procedure when I got it, so the stats are still pretty early out... but people have had their stomachs removed for centuries, and lived through it, and the DS has been around for a while, so I figured nothing completely unsuspected would probably pop up after surgery. I wanted to know everything I could find out about WLS before I got it!

How was your 5:2 day today?

I ate middle eastern food out two days ago and BAM. Up three pounds. I ate the leftovers yesterday, because, really that salty goodness is hard to say no to, and I will be making my fast tomorrow (today at home for Vets day... a little harder to fast so I left it for tomorrow) That should help kill the water weight.
