    Asking for Positive Thoughts Please

What a nice post Linda. And Nancy, I know its hard to give up on your favorite dishes. I think Linda has some good ideas! I am on a budget too, and try to get the best food for the least money! Can you substitute brown rice for the white? And I like a little corn too, but it is high glycemic index, which means it can spike your blood sugar and make you hungry! Rather than eat it by itself, I mix a small amount into my mixed veggies, or in my Soup to get the sweet flavor without having too much. Beans are yummy, and can be so healthy if you don't add too much fat. Just a touch. I think you will be ok, but just have to get out your creative flair and make over those family favorites for your NEW Healthy life. Its so great that you went to your meeting, it looks like every one else chickened out but you! One on one with the nut is great. Maybe you can make over some of your recipes and take them in to share with her and get other ideas. Best of luck in the new year!

This is in the header of the Vets forum, do you think that is enough? Do we still need to make a sticky? Gastric Sleeve Veteran's ForumThis forum is dedicated to veteran Sleevers who are one year or more post-op to discuss issues specific to those who are further along in their journey. 6. Bear, I follow a version of the 5:2, that is a longevity protocol that involves two days of semi fasting every week. It has helped me to lose some regain and finally get to goal and maintain. Not too hard to follow. In fact I enjoy how it makes me feel. I have thought how the enforced calorie reduction involved in WLS seems like it would cause life extension to me too...
  7. Here it is. Obesity and Mortality Risk New Findings From Body Mass Index Trajectories I signed up for this site, its free and quite interesting. You can get notices on any topic you want. http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/815335_1 Here is a tantalizing two paragraphs from a LONG DRY article. IntroductionThe rising prevalence of obesity has emerged as a potential threat to overall life expectancy in the future. The extent of this threat, however, is still uncertain, and estimates of the percentage of total deaths due to obesity vary widely, from 5%[1] to 13%.[2–4] Although these estimates are all based on measuring the mortality consequences of body mass index (BMI) assessed at baseline (i.e., at 1 point in time), other studies have found that a dynamic measure of weight status (weight or BMI change) is more predictive of mortality than is a static measure of weight status (i.e., baseline BMI), especially among older adults.[5, 6] We might expect obesity to increase the risk of death more profoundly when it persists over the life course. Therefore, in order to better assess the rising threat of obesity, it is essential to examine the mortality consequences of BMI trajectories. Prior studies based on dynamic measures have yielded mixed findings about the mortality consequences of weight change.[5–21] Several factors contribute to the mixed findings. First, the association of weight change with mortality depends on baseline BMI status. Weight gain leads to excess death among overweight/obese individuals but lowers the mortality risk among underweight or normal weight people.[8] Second, the association differs by the magnitude of weight change. Modest weight gains are associated with a decreased mortality risk, but excessive weight gains predict an increased mortality risk.[7, 13] When both initial weight and the magnitude of change are taken into account, small weight gains (1.0–2.9 BMI units) are not associated with excess mortality risk among 50–70-year-old Americans, regardless of their initial BMI levels, whereas large weight gains (3.0–5.0 units) increase the risk of death only when the initial BMI is greater than 35. Moreover, both small weight losses (1.0–2.9 units) and large weight losses (3.0–5.0 units) are associated with an increase in the risk of death among people who are normal, overweight, or mildly obese at baseline.[22] What!??? 8o

How was your 5:2 day today?

Protein drink for lunch, and having pan fried veggies with a slice of melted cheese, and chocolate pudding for desert. 550.
  9. I'll see If I can find a medical study paper I just read in the last week... showing how changing BMI can predict longevity... the longest lived people are overweight, with their BMI staying the same. The shortest lived are the most obese whos BMI is going up, and the underweight who BMI is going down. (I think that was the order)

How was your 5:2 day today?

Jane, I have not taken prescription drugs for anxiety or depression, but sure have self medicated through the years! Almost everyone else in my family does though. I think about it once in a while... I use nutritional yeast in a glass of water to head off anxiety, and stay away from caffein... coffee for sure, black tea almost all of the time, and even chocolate gets to me in quantity. Depression I mostly use my head, distraction, goals and purpose work helps to some degree. This only works on everything BUT the chemistry... so it works more or less depending. Seeing where my head is early on helps... At least I don't languish in depression for weeks before I realize am there... and the way the world looks to me is because of the filter I have put on it. I am much less yoyo mooded then when I was younger.... May be my hormones are more stable, or maybe its the head work I have done. Only you can decide where your line is.....

Southbeach is a very humane eating style. As a vegetarian, it worked pretty well for me (until it didn't!) Choosing low glycemic index carbs makes such a difference.

How was your 5:2 day today?

I am fasting today as well.. cold turkey is probably best, I have been doing a "lower and lower" plan (because I have been eating the leftovers instead of throwing them out!) so eating small portions until gone.. they are pretty much gone, so I should be pretty good today. Hoping no one at work brings temptation..... I am in for a good fast day though too! Cyber thoughts your way!
  13. I would follow your doc/nuts plan. The weight will slow down and speed up over time. A few slow weeks don't really merit a major overhaul of eating style. Stick with real food if you can, and use the drinks and bars to supplement your protein if you need to. Eating lots of bars and drinks tend to make your diet more "sweet" and that can lead to the desire for more sweet, even if its not sugar.... Sounds like you are doing well. Just keep it up!

HI Mac, I would recommend you go to your regular health care professional for advice... they might be able to point you in the right direction, best of luck to you on your weight loss journey!
  15. I would like to get my bounce range down around 4 more pounds... I managed to wind up at the top of my goal bounce range at Christmas... was a little higher than that a few days... So pretty happy all in all. I did make lots of carb yummies choices, and even though I managed to stay at goal, have carb cravings now... I have been cutting back a little bit more each day... not cold turkey... Fasting tomorrow... that should help.

Definitely go. Let them be there for you. I make unhealthy choices now and then, I write them down in MFP and keep on going. Sometimes its harder than others. Part of changing our habits is by changing them! If you just hid out in the past, and felt sad, now you can come forward and do the best you can to make it right. Thats all we can do as human beings. Its great that you admitted where you were coming from here, thats great!
  17. You have done really well. It takes time to get where you want to go and there will be stalls along the way. At least there were for me. I took 3 years to lose 91 pounds and get to goal. Now THAT is a slow loser. I bet you get it off faster than I did! I have to say though, 3 years is not too long to get the weight off. Off is off and thats were I want it to be however long it took! My doc said 10 pounds a month is normal. Just keep up the good work and your body will take care of the rest.
  18. You sound like someone that doesn't know how to do for yourself! Nows the time. I don't know how old your family is, but maybe you can sit them down and ask them to help mommy out. You really need to heal... and that takes time. It may drive you nuts, I know it did me, I was out of work for 6 weeks, because I wasn't cleared to lift anything over 10 pounds for 6 weeks! I was begging to go back to work at 4 weeks.... Seriously, you do not want to pull your stitches and have to go back to the hospital! Sit down and catch up on some TV or read that giant book you have been meaning to do for so long! Needlepoint for next christmas? Now is the time. Feet up, giant class of Water.... a Protein drink by your side, YOU CAN DO IT! The time will be over before you know it.

    The 5:2 Diet

You may not have to make many changes, but just being aware of the cals can really help... it might just be a serving size change... and the two days of "fasting" is not giving up that much, there is always tomorrow to have your normal "go to"
  24. Interesting. Do you think that's his way of food policing ? Nope, I think that he looks at it as seconds without effort....He has always been very careful to make sure the kids had enough to eat..He would leave a piece of steak a lone just in case my 6'8" son might need it....It is a new thing for him to see food like this... I think that he feels that I am not going to eat it anyway so get it while it's hot sorta thinking.....He has asked me to order normal portions and take the rest home for his lunch the next day...Well that has only happened a few times.... When I take half home, it is understood it is for ME unless I pass it on. Thats not to say there isn't a lot of begging going on, and even some anger that I am holding on to "my" food selfishly. Honestly, I have to hide some food or it would be gone in an instant. I like having my tablespoon of chocolate chips and dried cherries in the evening... if he finds them the whole bag is gone in a flash... that is after he already ate the two bags I bought for him..... Really, I think he needs to pay for the food (I pay for it now) He would be shocked at how much "luxury" food he chows down on like its Beans on toast! I know how people have a tendency to see a magnified view of partners eating vast quantities of food after we get the surgery (the same amount we ate earlier!)....it is kind of revolting at times.... mindless....

    Cheated with veggies

^^^ this is a joke....right? I just reached goal at 3 years! I am a vegatarian, and sooo love veggies. I know early on there isn't much room for them, and sometimes the tummy says NO!! to some of them. I couldn't eat raw for months... What I did, and still do, is make a big pot of veggie Soup, and eat away. It slides right down, so does not fill you up for long, you get in your veggies, tastes good, good for you and if made right is low cal. Also counts towards your water! I also love stir fries, steamed and other veggie preparations, added with veggie Proteins.
