How was your 5:2 day today?

I talked to Laura, she said shes not ready to come back to BP just yet and said: "I hope the girls and you are doing well. Tell them I said hi and I miss them too, I'm just kind of a mess right now. Laura" I told her that we will support her wether she is "a mess" or not. Come back when she's ready. Anyway, glad to see your face around. Ain't the same without you! I don't need only good news, I just want to hear it when its there! Share the joy! What is with these bodies!? It seems like a mystery to me. What/when/how/why it all works or doesn't work seems to float in the breeze, being blown off track and back on with the slightest gust. Good for you still in the game, Hope this helps get things back where you want them... on the way down to smaller fabulous! Have we gotten negative? I'm sorry, I know I've been in a funky funk for a while now, I apologise for bringing the blahs with me every time I post. Urgh, I wish I could quit me!! Wanda, I totally feel you. I think I'm going to follow your lead and try the 4:2 (with long fasting periods every day) plus one 'larger than normal' day per week. I'll try that for a while, for sanity and for weight loss. Thanks for the inspiration!! And Swiz, This last bit has really been hard for you, I know. At 5'6" and 150... that pretty small and normal... I think it would be hard to get below that. i am only under 2" taller than you, and weigh 20 pounds more. I can't get the scale to really budge at this time.... it does love to bounce though! I love that you guys are planning a trip! And Cathy, where did that hot new pic go? I don't have an ipad... so cant help you with that...

First "fast day" of 5:2 plan

When I started I would have an Iced coffee(decaf) with a ESA Carb control Protein drink in it... I would just sip that throughout the day. Then have dinner at the regular time. As the weather got colder, I started not liking the cold drink, so switched to a hot coffee with milk. I have had a greek yogurt a time or two as well. Now many of the 5:2 ladies swear by making that fasting window longer... like around 16 hours, so I have started just having a decaf with a spoonful of non dairy creamer (10 calories) and thats it until dinner. I eat dinner kind of early on those days... like 5pm. I have all (most) of my calories in that meal, and maybe some for a later snack... not too much later. Thats what i am doing now. The best plan is one you can stick too, and one of the authors of the book would have breakfast and dinner, the other would only have dinner.... it worked for both of them. One of the 5:2 vets used 5:2 for months and did not lose a pound... she started making the window bigger and started to lose more weight.....you don't want to feel deprived, or weak, but we have found that after doing it for a week or two, it gets much easier and we actually look forward to it. You can alway have that thing you want to eat tomorrow with this plan.

    Gas post sleeve?

The gas pain they talk about is usually felt in the shoulder, and from the gas they inflate the intestinal cavity to make room for the surgery... its not inside the stomach or intestines... yes it is normal to get the "water down the drain" sound. I had it for months, then it went away. It was LOUD. The tummy produces the amount of acid it needed when big... and it takes a while to heal and get to its new "normal". That is my understanding anyway...

First "fast day" of 5:2 plan

Vets don't recommend the 5:2 to people under a year out, we recommend your Docs plan...but I'm not your ma so here goes. The 5:2 is not specifically a weight loss plan, but a longevity plan. Keep in mind this is in the Vets forum, and anyone under a year out is not supposed to post there.... http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/291240-52-links-and-info/ The 5:2 worked/works very well for me. After years of not reaching goal, I lost some regain(22 pounds) and then got to goal. Watch the link to the show that started it if you haven't already. Best of luck to you!

Hurrah Cathy! I know how good it feels to get into "new numbers".
  9. I just posted this show on sugar vs fat that addresses some myths and truths about consumption of those foods... very interesting... #12

    Low fat versus low sugar

I just watched it, worth the time. Same good quality as the "fast diet" program. Some good take away info. One interesting thing they find is fat by itself is not addicting, and sugar by itself is not addicting... but put them together 50/50 and they become addicting... you don't find a 50/50 mix of sugar and fat in nature, and our bodies don't have a shut off mechanism and we like how it tastes.....so cheese cake, donuts, icecream.... addictive.... but not a spoon of sugar.

  14. I always suspected this: "When people eat controlled diets in laboratory studies, the percentage of calories from fat, Protein, and carbohydrate do not seem to matter for weight loss. In studies where people can freely choose what they eat, there may be some benefits to a higher protein, lower carbohydrate approach. For chronic disease prevention, though, the quality and food sources of these nutrients matters more than their relativequantity in the diet. And the latest research suggests that the same diet quality message applies for weight control." I think that must be why MFP works so well... even on days I eat junk (not that often any more) I write it down and usually do not see a gain on the scale... or the gain is short lived... probably salt/water weight related. I know people here who say that losing weight with low carb/high protein eating has leveled out....and others (like me) who never used low carb eating (but perhaps a little lower carb- being a vegetarian means eating some higher carbs) and had success in the long run. "Protein and WeightHigher protein diets seem to have some advantages for weight loss, though more so in short-term trials; in longer term studies, high-protein diets seem to perform equally well as other types of diets." Seems like a very balanced article.

    Low fat versus low sugar

If I ate the carb plate described by the photo for a month (looks like all white flour and sugar)... there is NO way I would lose ANY weight. I'm sure it was just a prop.. but like you say... they really don't give you any details at all. If you want more details you might be able to find the Horizion show someplace. Thats where the 5:2 plan was hatched as well.

Waiting to have sleeve after another surgery

I have not had this procedure, but the sleeve does much of its healing in the first 8 weeks. Perhaps it is the same for a hysterectomy? Sorry this is happening to you... what a lot to go through! In a year, you are going to feel like a new woman. I would plan on 8 weeks, and see how it goes! I sounds like the WLS Doc is flexible. As a side, when you lose a lot of weight you body releases lots of hormones stored in the fat... I wonder how that might affect your other situation... Best of luck!

    Bikram Yoga (aka Hot Yoga)

I was told 8 weeks. I would not "Just go". I would call your Docs office for their advice, talk to the yoga instructor about your operation before class, and really listen to your body. Yoga stretches and massages the internal organs as well as the muscles, and I'm sure is great because of this, but with a weakness in the staple line until it is fully healed, I would say take care. My Dance teacher is also a yoga teacher, has a lot of physical therapy training, and she has been very helpful in adding specific warm ups and drills to address my bone spurs, and others different needs.

pain in back to lower knee :(

My doc said that losing weight will not remove arthritis pain, but will slow the deterioration on joints. I would say save up for your copays for therapy (I assume this is the cost you are talking about) or perhaps they will let you go in once and decide how to go from there... I had bone spurs show up a couple years after surgery, and it really shut my exercise down. I went to three sessions of PT, and a sports medicine doc... I did have to pay $40 copays each time... but it made a huge difference. The pain is not entirely gone, but I am back at the gym, and have a plan to keep the pain at bay. Best of luck to you! Pain is not a joke. (I too got a high end pillow top as a gift, and I find it is heaven next to the old rotten cheap mattress I had before. But when I have hip pain when the weather gets cold, the mattress can only go so far in helping my comfort) Do what you can to invest in the Docs plan... He might be able to work with you to bring the cost in line a little... When I told the PT guys I didn't have that much money, they reduced the number of visits to start with.

I like Vegemite, but hate Marmite... go figure. My hubby is from NZ and if there is Vegemite in the house , he eats it up before I get a spoonfull. Acquired taste for sure.... Reckon?

    Cold medicines?

If you have high blood pressure, heart disease, especially Atriel fibrillation, I would only take Coricidin HPB. It is the safest compound. there are also sugar free meds... http://www.walgreens.com/q/sugar-free-cold-medicine

How was your 5:2 day today?

someone must have cut him off...? the link is gone. He must be depressed. I do think its time for him to pack it up... does he have a butt load of stuff? Is it something he can do himself or does he need help? Does he own part of the house? Do you have an "extra" room or shed that you can put his stuff in? A little shed can be had for less than $300 on sale.... Even paying first and last on a cheep room someplace might be worth your time and money to get him out.... Is he paying-supposed to be paying rent? If so, you could evict him legally... and theres always the "pack his Shite up, put the boxes on the lawn and change all the locks" technique... Does he have relatives/friends that you could call to help him get out and move on? If you think he is a danger to himself or others, you could call in a 5150 and try and get him a 72 hour evaluation...Maybe stages.... like NO MORE COOKING PRIVILEGES SIGNS OF PACKING MUST BE EVIDENT EVERY DAY JOB APPLICATIONS IN EVERY DAY good for two weeks or whatever the REAL deadline is, if conditions not met, then the doors get new locks. Put whatever you do in writing. For him, and to show legally you have a paper trail. It may be time for a RED cocktail dress!.... maybe something you can wear with the new corset?

Hey NorCals! Where is everyone from?

    Welcome to PB child!
  25. Hopefully surgery will help you get off some of them too... My dog gave me some chewable and liquid meds to take right after surgery, this helped get them down until the tummy healed a bit... you can also get chewable vitamins... this helped me a lot.
