My Mom is considering the sleeve...

Studies show that this surgery is very safe for older people. The risks are considered very low for the over 60 crowd.

    Twins

So I am finishing up all my pre-op meetings, went to the Nut yesterday for my last meeting. She said even though I am all the way into menopause, I could possibly pop out of menopause and get pregnant during weight loss, and at my age there is a huge chance of having twins! Double birth control for a while! Nothing like dumping a bunch of estrogen out of your excess fat all at once to excite those little old eggs hanging around.:wink0:

    Psychological Evaluation?

Now that IS strange! Perhaps this is part of a research study or something... I had a test on the computer... 165 questions true/false. Then a follow up sit down with a live Psych. for about 45 minutes. Same questions as above and a rresultseading of the first test I took on the computer. I found it fascinating but was not surprised to hear what my "issues" were. She didn't think there were any problems and approved me for surgery. I think they sometimes just want to touch issues that perhaps you might not have thought of.. or taken seriously And look for issues that might make your surgery difficult or unsuccessful.

    WLS Vitamins?

My center says 1 multi Vitamin and Iron or vitamin w/iron am and first snack...2 calcium noon and 2 in the pm, B12 whenever... D with calcium. I must say, they handed out vitamin sheets for RNY to everyone... only a small percentage of their patients get the sleeve at this point... so I wonder if I have to take as many Vitamins at they say.....
  8. Someone here mentioned she weighs every day and writes it down once a week on the same day. That sounded like a good plan to me. A little balance to level out the crazy! I thought I might try that after I get the sleeve.
  9. Thats pretty much how I think about it too. I understand when others say "Its none of their business". I also really appreciate all the openness that others with the surgery have show me. I have had a few people (really very few) who have said to me "You look fine, you don't need to do that", I tell them, its not about how I look, its about my health. 5 Drs have approved this. I even had one nurse tell me that I didn't look like I needed to lose that much weight. Mostly people are curious and/or tell me its my body and they think I a smart enough to make my own decisions what to do with it. Many are supportive. A few want to know more... and might consider surgery for themselves too.
  10. When I was slimmer I thought I was fat (20+ years ago), now that I'm fatter I think I am slimmer! It really surprises me when I see photos.... I think OMG! That giant woman can't be me! When I see photos of me from when I thought I was fat, I think OMG! I was so cute and slim! My head is all screwed up! Hope I can get it right this time.

    Eating my head off!

I am suposed to keep my weight the same for three months before surgery. I just made chocolate chip cookies a couple of days ago. I added soy protein, splenda instead of sugar and whole wheat flour. I am trying to do some damage control without giving up everything! And trying to get in the habit of eating more protein... and drinking water....NOT with meals. You can do it! I am going on vacation for three weeks and will be back 14 days before surgery.. now that scares me a bit... I won't have as much control over my choices while there. I was thinking about getting some protein drinks to have before eating out so I'm not has hungry....I will be writing everything I eat down too... Don't want to come back way up and not have time to lose it!

    January Sleevers

Hi guys! January 18th with Dr, Ali in Sacramento at UCDavis Med Center. Once I decided to try and get approval, it only took me 6 weeks to go from my first meeting to getting my date. The staff has been awesome. I am 57 and been dieting most of my life. I started having health problems... high BP, High cholesterol and triglicerides... and A-fib. as well as arthritis. All just this year. Also my best friend found out he had brain cancer, and I just decided to get off my a*s and try something different to improve my health. I eat pretty clean, and have gotten my exercise up to 4 days a week over the past 2 years, but have stayed the same weight. I think the sleeve is just the thing I need to get my weight going in the right direction...DOWN. I feel like I'm going to miss the GIANT salads I used to eat... but am a good cook and know I will make a delicious life for myself...even if the portions are smaller. Also... I am a vegetarian, and this will perhaps make it harder to find proteins while eating out... Im glad I love beans and Tofu!

    Hubster jumped ship...

Tell him that getting diabetes or other weight related illness is "not right" when you can do something about it now. Tell him that dying 2 1/2 years prematurely from obesity is more "different" than eating small meals, and feeling like you need to eat 4 times as much to have good family time is "weird" (I know, I'm a smarta*s) Hubby is probably just scared of the unknown. Let him know you will be there for him MORE if you get this done by living longer and better.
  17. Earlier this year is had a-fib and irregular ekgs. Those are now under control with medication. I was given an ekg and stress test as part of my run up of tests before surgery. My Dr. gives them to everyone. Hopefully it will all go well for you! good luck!

    Please Help!! Newbie Onboard

Mine is stated like this: Principal Exclusions and Limitations The following services and supplies are excluded or limited: 28) Weight control surgery or procedures including without limitation gastric bubble, gastroplasty, gastric bypass, gastric stapling, liposuction and HCG injections; and any Experimental Procedures for the treatment of obesity. However, Medically Necessary services as determined by WHA for the treatment of morbid obesity with Prior Authorization are covered. At first it looked like I was SOL too, but my Dr. said my insurance is one of the easiest to work with! So call and check just to make sure it is NEVER covered. The last sentence in my exclusions wording is the "loophole". Someone here will know better than me, but Im pretty sure that Kaiser has you do a 6 month supervised diet and other stuff... so you need to be on the plan for a while to get it done. However you might be able to be a single payer for a while between your husbands job coverage. It might be cheeper to self pay in Mexico in the end....AND you wouldn't have to wait so long to get it done. (just the little matter of saving up the $$$!!!) Good luck in your journey... don't give up!

    Carbs?

Tofurkey is a form of Seitan meat that also contains some soy. Some people are allergic to Gluten... lucky for me I don't have a problem. I love it sliced cold for "turkey" sandwitches... I will have to do without for a while... but it is nice alone too.
