I am not controlling my sweet tooth

Mini, bright side, at least Reeses have protein in them! So you had a three day mini binge. I know that for me after the third day of eating candy, I get the serious crack addict cravings. You pulled out just in time. I think Chilo is right, write it all down. I know that really slows me down, and gets me back on track. Heres a strange thing, I had a weekend mini binge (this Weekend too) at a sleep over at a friends house... pizza and these candy/cookie things made out of chocolate/toffee/coconut, heaven help us, the three of us ate two small boxes over two days. Pure cookie CRACK. Well I skulked home and went right back on track with protein first (I haven't even had the surgery yet...) and guess what? I lost three pounds the next day. I think my body was so shocked that I went there with the sugar after months of eating clean, it just gave up a little bit and let go of some weight. I dodged a bullet. Anyway, good job getting back on track girl! Confession is good for the soul!

    nervous mother

I am shooting this in because it came to mind, and mean no offense at all. Some people who get Weight Loss Surgery replace their 'addiction' to food with something else. If beer is more than just an enjoyable, take it or leave it indulgence... it could escalate to a real problem. Just something to keep a heads up about. I am getting sleeved in January, and am very excited about it. He will have to do the work, but the sleeve will help make his efforts pay off and stay off. Its very nice that you are a little worried and supporting him in his efforts. Education is everything in making the right decision. Has he thought about going to Mexico to get sleeved? Good Drs and a good price. Perhaps he wouldn't need to sell the car...Im sure he would look very nice in it after losing all that weight!

    Waiting to Drink after Meals

Congrats on the weight loss and the compliments! And getting off the meds, thats just super. I havn't gotten my surgery yet, so I can't comment on the drinking after meals... I have been trying to be conscious of not doing it now, before surgery. I look at the clock after eating, and it seems like before I know it, its 20-30 minutes later. Also, I drink a bunch up to 5 minutes before eating, so Im not really thirsty. (my nut says 5 minutes before, 20-30 after for drinking. I know this is different than some others...)

    Protein Shake Alternatives

Sorry to say...I'm pretty sure the egg drop soup is supposed to be strained before eating early out....
  6. I'm in the public eye now and then... I get featured in the paper or a magazine around 4 times a year. It looks to me like the time is ripe for WLS to go ballistic. Its a really good time to assist its coming out in a positive, non sensationalized way. People don't get all crazy and judgmental when someone gets a bypass, or has a broken leg set...at some point I think WLS might just be good news to the public... a really good aid in treating obesity and its co-morbidities. The more common it is, the more its in the public eye, the less 'radical" it will be seen as. Perhaps taking' the easy way out' will just look smart and reasonable in the future. I am telling friends and family for now... But when it really starts to show.. I will answer questions in the most compassionate and thoughtful way I can come up with.... oh, and probably a little humor thrown in too... I don't want my whole public life to be about how I lost weight, but I will stand up and make a statement if anyone asks.

    How did you choose?

When I asked my Doc for a referral, I was thinking RNY, because thats all I knew about besides the band, which I knew I didn't want. When I went to the seminar, he said he only did RNY, and discussed why not the band. I signed up to try and get surgery. When I went in to the Dr. for my interview, he said I qualified for the sleeve because I was prescribed aspirin by my cardiologist, and my insurance actually would approve the sleeve, or he would do RNY.. my choice. I went home and looked into the sleeve, and at that point, I ONLY wanted the sleeve. I just felt uneasy about rerouting my guts, and losing my pyloric valve. The next time I went in, the surgical nurse acted like I was getting the RNY... I said no way. The sleeve was my only choice. She kind of acted a little snooty about it... talked to the Dr and he said OK...Im on the books for the sleeve. I think my Dr has not done many sleeves, but has done many many RNY with low complications and teaches it to other doctors as well. I was even thinking if my Dr wouldn't do the sleeve for me, I would go to Mexico and self pay. My surgery is in January.

After us talking about Chike here, I decided to try one of my flavor samples and do a little review. I tryed Chike banana with 1% milk and a spoon of PB. First I dipped my finger in the envelope to taste the powder and it tasted pretty good. No strangeness. No bad smell. Then I mixed with milk in a blender. tasted good... no grit or strange tastes. Then I added ice and the PB. I don't think you would need the PB but it is more protein and was ok. It was smooth and a little thick(not TOO thick) Creamy, and there was no separation at the top or bottom of the glass. It was a little sweet... but not gross. I chose the banana sample because I thought I would like it the least... but I would drink it again. It was good and not too fake tasting. I have only tasted three kinds of protein powders so far, and this one was the best!

    Need advice/opinions

Im going to Dr Ali in Sacramento UCDavis Med Center. Its a center of excellence and he is the head of the dept of a teaching school. He has done many many RNY. I need to ask him how many VSGs but I don't think many. His partner there recommended me for the sleeve or RNY, so the are doing the sleeve there at least some of the time. Their record is GREAT for RNY. They do not recommend the band at all, and this gives me even more confidents.

    Holiday Strategies

My surgery is January 18th, and I will be in New Zealand for Xmas with the inlaws and friends. My prob is there will be wine flowing at mom in laws...chatting and drinking into the night... and we plan on a one week tour of wineries in the south island with friends.... my doc has made us sign a no drink, no caffein, no aspirin, no no no no list for before surgery. I am normally not much of a drinker... but I have to tell you this bunch Im visiting IS, and of course, the wine tasting trip will be a blast.....SO when I get back I will have two weeks until my pre surgery visit, and three weeks till surgery... do you think this will be long enough of a sober period to get back to normal after a drinking persons vacation? Of course I can taste and spit, and just say no at moms....but....

    The Brain in the gut

So if the "gut" has 100 millions neurons - like a cat's brain, does that mean that having 85% of your stomach removed is like getting a mini lobotomy?
  19. As ridiculous and ignorant has her blog was...as much as it seems like she still hasn't "got it", as much as her nasty rant triggers my fears about how I might be seen by people I would like to impress positively....I don't want to turn into her... or act like her, or get down to her level. I'm glad this thing has blown up. She is taking the brunt of the anger of thousands of people who have had it up to HERE with similar bad behavior for years. So many of the responsive comments are smart and genuine. The voice of intelligent decent. This one post has made her infamous. It will probably haunt her for the rest of her career. She might even get IT some day. She might have just done the one thing at the right time to move this rotten topic into the light. So thanks Maura...it hurt, but it felt sooo good to be seeing the unfolding of all this poetic justice. Perhaps the next time someone sees a "fatty" walking across the room, and the mental negativity starts in their head...they will stop and wonder for just a second, "Do I really know whats going on here? Do I really know anything about this person? Really?"
  20. There are several Drs in Sacramento. I found these, but you need to do your own research to find out which one is best for you. I go to UCDavis Med Center Dr. Ali. I think he has just started doing the Sleeve. He has tons of experience with RNY and is the head of the dept. which is a center of excellence. I was told a five year followup is included. My insurance covers most of it, so I don't know how much is self pay. 2221 Stockton Blvd # E Sacramento, CA 95817-1418 (916) 734-2680 Dr. Paul T. SOOOOO much better! I like the color better too. That other one made me sick! Thanks for the info!
  22. WE all know there are some people who feel like this author... I guess her "honesty" has allowed the dust to be kicked up and the discussion to begin in earnest. Its about time. With almost 30% of the population obese, perhaps there is a fight to be won. A mind to be changed.
