VSG - 5-year result study
feedyoureye replied to Can'tweight's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It sure would be helpful to know this kind of statistic in regards to these studies... My Dr told me that bougie size has nothing to do with the success of weight loss... I'm not convinced... -
Can I Boycott Calcium???
feedyoureye replied to armstrong1003's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When you take PPIs and antacids like many sleevers, your stomach can not absorb many kinds of calcium. The only one that does not need an acid environment is Calcium Citrate. If you don't have enough calcium in your system, your body will pull it out of your bones. A side effect of taking PPIs is unusual bone fractures. As far as those who do not take any PPIs, I don't know, you would need to ask your Dr. I hate taking a bunch of pills every day... but the calcium is an insurance policy I hope I never need to cash in. -
Fantastic job not just losing so much weight, but sticking to your plan to get the surgical support you needed.

yikes! must be for gaining weight!

A small 5 year study of sleevers show 30% have reflux after 5 years. It does not say if they had it before or not. Ask your Doc if your hernia is the cause....

I'm not sure if there are studies on long term PPI use while taking Calcium or not... I know that long term PPI use can lead to bone loss and increased fractures. I hope to go off of PPIs some day... my doc asks us to take them for 6 months. I only had reflux before surgery when I ate lots of chocolate (CAKE...read that Crack!)... so I hope not to be one who needs to take them forever. http://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?id=38747

VSG - 5-year result study
feedyoureye replied to Can'tweight's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The stats don't mention starting weight or hight, exercise or eating habits...other factors.... I do try to accept the very real possibility that I will only lose and keep off 55% of my excess weight. And the old ever used "fact" quoted here.."lost for good" is not a fact for many people. I don't think it is impossible for me to lose it all, or most... but even with my best effort, its not a given. With that said, I think getting support like we get here, and changing eating and exercise habits can give me more of a chance at a satisfactory success. Even more than losing all my excess weight, I don't want to feel like a failure. I have felt like this with my weight a lot in the past. I don't feel like a failure in most other areas of my life... I still don't want to feel like this no mater if I lose 30% or 110%. When I was being interviewed by my Dr. he asked me if I would be happy losing 50 pounds (50%). I said yes... but really want to lose 100%. Time and behavior and the X factor will tell... -
N0. I am on a long stall, and am still not sure I will ever lose more weight (I know this is counter productive thinking...) I still have hope for summer 2012!

Luna, I wouldn't underestimate that 5 mile walk in your ability to lose weight or keep it off....

VSG - 5-year result study
feedyoureye replied to Can'tweight's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Here is the breakdown: Weight loss results of 26 patients with a complete follow-up of 5 years. RESULTS: Weight loss defined as mean percent excess weight loss (%EWL) for the first 5 years was found as: 57.5 +/- 4.5, 60.3 +/- 5.0, 60.0 +/- 5.7, 58.4 +/- 5.4, and 55.0 +/- 6.8 -Weight regain of more than 10 kg (22lbs) from nadir was observed in five (19.2%) of the 26 patients. -Four of the patients (15.4%) were converted to gastric bypass due to severe reflux (n = 1, 3.8%) and weight loss failure (n = 3, 11.5%). -A total of eight patients (30.8%) were at chronic need for proton pump inhibitor medication due to severe reflux. -Plasma ghrelin levels were reduced from 593 +/- 52 to 219 +/- 23 pg/ml 12 months postoperatively, with a slightly, non-significant increase toward the 5-years values of mean 257 +/- 23 pg/ml. CONCLUSIONS: At 5-year follow-up, a mean EWL of 55.0 +/- 6.8% was achieved, indicating that VSG leads to stable weight loss. Beside significant weight regain, severe reflux might necessitate conversion to gastric bypass or duodenal switch. After an immediate reduction postoperatively, plasma ghrelin levels remained low for the first 5 years postoperatively. full study here; http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20094819?itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum&ordinalpos=1 -

Smoking Cigarettes
feedyoureye replied to warrior68's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I quit a pack a day about 15 years ago. Now they just taste like ashes to me. I have tried one every 5 years or so... at a party with a drink, or with a friend in a social situation and Im glad to say the glamor is gone. Plus they really stink things up. When I visit my dear friend who smokes, she really tries to use fans and such and stay away from me when she smokes, and when I get home, my hair and cloths smell like smoke. I used to love it, but now its just yuck. You can do it, just hang in there and know you are really doing something great for yourself and others around you too! If you have kids or a non smoking other... you are saving their lives too at the same time. Plus these days they are soooo expensive! Put that money in a jar every week, and use it on new cloths after you lose your weight. Your skin will love you for it too.... -
Oversewing the staple line
feedyoureye replied to AMG's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My Doc does the sutures. I asked his assistant Fellow about it before hand, if they stitched or glued, and the guy said they both work just as well but the Center they work at does stitches. They didn't site any study though... just professional experience. -
