Anyone get the old "stapling" years ago and now have the sleeve?
SandSandles posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had the old stomach stapling back in 1980. I lost 100 pounds and kept it off for over 10 years, but eventually stress and stupidity put it back on. Anyone have any experience with have the old stapling and then getting sleeved? I am going June the 30th for the sleeve and was told I would have to do a barium swallow test in advance, and worst case scenario, could end up having to get the lap band instead. I am really really hoping for the sleeve because I don't want the "maintenance" of a lap band. Anyone have experience with this? -

SandSandles replied to SandSandles's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It was just a "worst case scenario" thing that almost all docs do. I feel pretty confident about getting the sleeve. Several years ago I had some unrelated tests and the doc at that time said He couldn't really see the staples anymore. I'm looking for people with direct experience with this. Anyone run into any obstacles? -
Calling all June sleevers

You're gonna look horrible for a while...
SandSandles replied to samantha209's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I sort of discussed it with my 30 year old son... just a general conversation about it. I was SHOCKED when he was so negative about it. He said that I would look too old because my skin would be all saggy and wouldn't bounce back. ... had to think about that one. I changed the subject and moved on to a different topic. Having the sleeve on June 30th... wonder if he will just see me as old, saggy, and thin? Shoot... at least I'll be able to cross my legs again!!!! hahahahahaha -
What can be done pre op to ease the gas pains after surgery?
SandSandles replied to TQtime's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When I had my tubes tied.. many years ago... they used gas and did it laposcoprically. It settled in my shoulder and was very uncomfortable for one evening. I walked and took tylenol. It did not last long. Just keep telling yourself that it is only temporary. -
58 years too old for VSG?
SandSandles replied to graymadebbie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Technically.... you are BUYING yourself a longer life. Too old? ... You know that you feel younger than your body will let you feel, carrying the extra weight. We have talked about doing this on and off for years. It is time! Your friend... -
Obstacle 1: How to disappear for 5 days
SandSandles replied to SandSandles's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well... it is official. I booked the flight to San Diego on June 30th. So now I have to come up with my story for disappearing for those 4 days. My husband would not even think about discussing it with me. He is always fearful of change in a lot of different areas. I will have to go by myself, get it done, see progress...and THEN tell him..... after the fact. I have learned that about him... and it has worked for other things so that is what I have to do. It will be 4th of July weekend so being out of town is a lot more plausible. It will all work out. It is funny that I am more fearful of telling my husband than the surgery itself. hahahaha One thing about it, I have not read ANY posts from people who REGRET having the surgery. That is very encouraging. I am reading, studying, and mentally preparing. Here we go! -
It is just the Texas border, from what I have read. California seems to be safe. I live in Texas too, and right now, I'm not going to consider TEXAS/MEXICO border. I'm going to San Diego. That is just my preference.... Perhaps the border will calm down in a few months, but the Texas news is not very favorable for Mexico right now. Perhaps it is centered more around El Paso, than Brownsville... but be sure and check it out thoroughly.

Obstacle 2: Sleeve Prices Vary
SandSandles replied to SandSandles's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well, interesting... haven't seen those bad reports .. and YES makes me think again. The problem is that I can get $5,000 together but NOT $8,500. Where I live, the doctors will do the surgery IN the US for $9,000 so if the Doctors in Mexico are the same price as Texas, then why keep looking? Doesn't matter though because I simply cannot afford over $5,000 ... fact. If I could, then locally would be my best choice. So .. sadly... depressingly... doesn't look like I have good options afterall. Just need to sleep on it and keep shopping.... and dreaming. -

TEXAS border... NOT all borders.. not all tourists. I said it was the TEXAS border. It is on the Texas news almost nightly. It has never been this bad.. in TEXAS before. -
Obstacle 2: Sleeve Prices Vary
SandSandles replied to SandSandles's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That is one of the reasons I have chosen the sleeve over the lapband - low maintenance. I am in Texas, so there isn't any post-vsg support locally that I am aware of. That doesn't bother me because of the abundance of information on the forums. I just have to step over that line and make the airfare reservation. lol... that will be the defining moment. Thanks again -- your feedback is GREATLY appreciated! -

SandSandles replied to SandSandles's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Really? That is good to know. But why the HUGE price difference? -- both doctors receive GLOWING reports. Both doctors have a LOT of feedback. I have found nothing negative with either one of them. People say "do your research" -- well I have and so far I cannot find the reason for the price difference. BOTH out of San Diego. BOTH do the same procedure. BOTH have a lot of positive reviews. BOTH list the same treatment & care. That being said, wouldn't it make more sense to go with the less expensive procedure? -

That is what I am struggling with also. My husband is a blabbermouth. lol... and I mean that affectionately. hahahaha I don't want to tell anyone either, so I'm trying to work out why I will be "gone" for 5 days.

LOL... another vacation? Sure, why not? Nevermind the fact that I will just be getting back from a Cruise on May 8th. hahahaha He already KNOWS how much I love to travel. You know what? I have a friend in LA who recently came to see me.. not a close friend and it was actually just a layover, but I wonder if she would MEET me in San Diego? Also have another friend in AZ that might give me a reason to go to SD. But I'm getting a little closer to lining out the logistics... thanks. -
Obstacle 1: How to disappear for 5 days
SandSandles replied to SandSandles's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've been married to mine for almost 20 years... he cannot keep a secret. Never has. hahaha... learned that about it early on. I have learned that he is on a "need to know" basis. He knows I want the surgery, so there won't be any need to hide the scars from him. It is about WHERE I am having the surgery. He also is comfortable with "lap-band" and knows NOTHING about the sleeve. That would freak him out totally. lol. I am just calling it "Weight Loss Surgery" -- I've not said what kind. He is drawing his own conclusions. Except that I promised him it was NOT the Rune-Y like his daughter had (and failed). This is helping me sort out this issue... THANKS for your replies and thoughts and experiences!!... I'm thinking "online" -- instead of "outloud" hahahaha -

Hmmmm.... Hernia repair. You know, I have had a lot of acid reflux lately... lol .... HAHAHAHA I've got to get it all sorted out and my ducks in a row. I honestly cannot tell a convincing lie... never could. I have to tell the truth -- BUT I have to be clear on just how much of that truth I want to reveal. Where am I going and why? ...... San Diego for the mosquito festival... No wait, that is in Texas. lol. -

I KNOW! They are more concerned about Mexico than the actual surgery. lol. It may just be a matter of feminine wiles on hubby. I KNOW his concerns are out of love. Which makes it harder to push my desire. Thanks for responding.
