Just How Important is your Post-Surgical Dietitian
sasicas replied to happy1957's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would absolutely request someone else. Personally though, it's supposedly required at my hospital to see the NUT at 1, 3, 6, 9, 12 months. I have not gone and have no plans to go see them again. They were useless at my pre op appts. -
OMG..SLAP MY TUSH & CALL ME BISQUIT!
sasicas replied to Starry's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The title cracked me up, some people are lame, can't believe they would blast you. Sounds like a couple of trolls or boring,, miserable people to me. -
So glad to see this post, my memory is shot lately. I even messed up the budget this month and I am a total math geek. *sigh*. I forget even the basic everyday things I have been doing for years. Glad to hear its likely temporary.

So I had my 3 month check up and surprisingly my labs looked pretty good! I totally expected them to look funky, I am the queen of forgetting to take my Vitamins. My Vit D was low but I am getting a prescription for someone I need to take once a week for 12 weeks to deal with that. My good cholesterol was a little low and my bad cholesterol a little high but I was assured it would look better as I get more energy to start exercising more. Also they did a parathyroid intact and it was high but he said everything else looked good so he is not worried. The decision was made to go ahead with one more scope, I am still getting that stuck feeling daily and usually once a day I get the intense pain feeling that landed me in the hospital last time *sigh* Hopefully it is just a stricture that can be easily ballooned open. All in all he said I was doing really good and the weight is still coming off pretty good to so that is exciting Nothing fits anymore, Im down from a very tight size 20 to 12/14 and a 1X to a Large, sometimes a medium I am almost all the way through my "skinny" clothes that have not even fit me in who knows how many years so off to the thrift stores I shall go this week to find some to get me through

Just a quick update. I had the scope done again. There is a good amount of swelling at the top of my sleeve from where the hole was. The swelling was enough that they could not see if the glue from the last scope really closed the hole. The paperwork says its gastritis and he upped my Nexium to twice a day and added in Zantac daily instead of just being as needed like it was before. He told my husband the pain will continue until the swelling goes away, who knows how long that will be. Its just insane to me that I am still fighting swelling in my sleeve at 3 1/2 months post op *sigh* I go back in to see him next week, not sure if there is anything else that can be done other than just waiting. Just hoping to get more pain meds for the days when my sleeve is really angry with me On the plus side I can eat pretty normal now just have to handle the pain from time to time.

How long did your pain last after surgerY?
sasicas replied to Ready4aNewLife's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I only had pain on one incision site and it lasted two months, drove me batty. Now it only bothers me if I have overdone it. Now I still deal with pain at the top of my sleeve but I still have swelling from a small hole I had up there and had a few other complications. The pain comes and goes daily but its rare to have that kind of issue. -
I hope you are feeling better with the meds and room temp drinks. I cannot do any Protein drinks either, haven't been able to get one down since surgery. Also know that some people have increased swelling post op and this can make things extremely difficult to get anything down. The swelling lets up around 6-7 week mark and life becomes much easier. I ended up in the hospital at one point for a week and a half because I was so sick and in so much pain. Hopefully though yours is just a case of not tolerating cold right now. IF it continues go to the ER, its always better to be safe than sorry.

How supportive is/was your spouse
sasicas replied to USMCwifeandTEACHER's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My husband has been extremely supportive however I do not expect him to cater to my eating habits. The weight issue is mine, not his. If he wants to eat junk and he does, he is a grown man. Now the only time I stop him is if he is spending too much money, that is a family thing. Days after my surgery I knew he was tired of cooking for the family so I suggested we go pick up a pizza and we drove home with two large pizzas on my lap. Man it smelled great but I will not expect my family to eat the way I had/have to. Now on the complaints over what you cook, well tell him to make his own food if he doesn't like it. My husband will eat what I make, sometimes he doesn't like it and we discuss afterwards what he thought of the meal (I'm constantly trying new meals out so some just don't taste good). This surgery is about willpower. YOU have to make the decision on if you want to succeed and make this a life long commitment. You cannot expect him or anyone else to constantly walk on eggshells with their food choices. -
Well I did it, cheated my a** off today, 14 days post
sasicas replied to USMCwifeandTEACHER's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Tomorrow is a new day. Start fresh again tomorrow. You have got to be careful, especially so early out. Truthfully I'm not sure I could eat that much at 3 months out, nor would I try. Like its said so many times on here, just because you can eat it, does not mean you should. -
I am hungry..should I eat?
sasicas replied to Lots Of Hope's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If it is right before your normal bedtime, I would say just go to sleep. Now if it were a couple hours before bed, then I would go with a high protein snack. -
Help! No one in my house understands!
sasicas replied to S311kyra's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just keep reminding yourself of why you did this. Remember you will be able to eat soon enough, just not in mass quantities. I quickly had to go back to cooking for my family even while on a liquid diet, a few days after surgery I even went with them to get pizza. YOu just have to fight through the temptation and remember the end outcome you are looking for. -
In many relationships the opposite is true, increase in sexual desires, taking better care of yourself which in our case has lead to my husband wanting to "show" me off which lead to me not feeling so resentful believing he was embarrassed of me. While those changes can make some people feel insecure as though they were not loved unconditionally it has done the opposite for me and really given me a boost in self esteem that I was lacking when fat. As an example, never has my husband been one to post pictures of me on his facebook page, not that there were many pictures of me to begin with but just the other day I had him take a picture of me to send to my mom, he encouraged me to post it to my facebook, then tagged himself in it. He wanted to show his wife off and it really made me feel so much better about myself.

How many of you 2 month or more out are still on a PPI?
sasicas replied to groovearmada's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't have any issues with heartburn before surgery. After surgery I was automatically put on Prilosec, it didn't work. Switched to Nexium and it does the job. -
Holy Crap my Face looks so different (Pics)
sasicas replied to apple-saucy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Woohoo! You look great! -
We have not had any issues in our marriage with the surgery however my "best friend" walked. About two weeks after my surgery she went from talking me every day to not having anything to do with me. No argument, no disagreement, she just bailed, guess she couldn't stand me losing weight. At the support group I go to I hear of way more issues with friends than with spouses or dating.

Thanks everyone for the compliments

Thanks! Thanks! My husband said the same thing lol. He said its like he's married to a whole new person Thanks! Love looking younger. Sure hope I'm not shrinking, I'm short enough as it is hehe. Thanks! Thanks, I am so glad to finally be adjusting and getting back to normal. Its taken way longer than I anticipated and hopefully after this next scope all will be good again.

Do you have any rather odd or unique goals?
sasicas replied to meggiep's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine was to weigh less than my hubby. I hit that goal for like a week, then he had jaw surgery and has been on a liquid diet for 4 weeks so he currently 5 lbs under me. So almost there again, though I am sure once he can eat real food again he will gain some weight back The other was to be able to cross my legs, which I was able to do as of 2 weeks ago -
Soon enough you will be able to get the protein through foods so I wouldn't worry about your lack of protein now. I am about 3 months post op and still not quite able to get the daily amount in but slowly am getting closer to that magic 60 grams a day. Protein drinks are just awful! I even tried putting unflavored in a smoothie like I did before and had to throw the smoothie out.
-
Yep so many changes for me. Sweets are now way too sweet, stuff with just a little bit of salt now tastes way overly salted. I now like several things that I did not like before too, like string cheese and bacon. Some of my old favorites I just cannot stand now.

Ashamed to say it :(.....yet being sleeved anyway
sasicas replied to ursieursie's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Make sure you think long and hard before going through with surgery. You HAVE to be willing to give up eating the way you are now. The sleeve is NOT a cure all. It is simply a tool and you can seriously do some damage to yourself if you force large amounts of food down. You have to be willing to follow the guidelines for eating and not try to force a few extra bites. Are you ready to eat a 1/4 cup of food a couple of times a day? Can you mentally handle that? I am 3 months post op and eat about 1/4 cup of Protein and maybe a spoonful of potatoes 3 times a day. A normal breakfast for me is a string cheese. You have to be ready to deal with it. If you go through with surgery it will be key for you to be in therapy. You will grieve the loss of being able to eat what you want, when you want, how you want. It will be key for you to be involved in a support group too. Like I said the sleeve is just a tool and you have to know it will not fix all your problems. It can be a very big struggle to watch others eat and knowing you cannot eat that way. This surgery is for life, there is no going back once its done. -
So glad she is doing better. I had a hole too and ended up having it closed with glue during a scope. The nausea, vomiting, dry heaves were awful too. Part of it can be from the swelling still in the sleeve. Tell her to ask for better meds, I was on 3 during my hospital stay for the complications. Phenergan, it works great but might just knock her out and Compazine works well too, again made me very tired.

Post-OP Benefits of having children and/or pets in the house
sasicas replied to apple-saucy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So cute! -
I shop at the local thrift stores and buy off of craigslist. Since it's yard sale season I'm going to start going to those again next weekend to look for clothes. I also look at clearance racks and pick up sizes I know I will get into, even if it its currently too small. I figure I will get there soon enough and have been shocked at some of the things already fitting. Dresses are great too, they tend to last the longest for me or skirts with a stretchy waist. Do you have a local support group? Might look to see if there is one and if they do a clothing exchange. My group does a clothing exchange every other month. I've gotten some great things there. Belts are great too for pants, I know for me, my butt and waist are shrinking faster than my thighs. However I have still dropped from a tight 20 down to a 12/14 in 3 months and gone from a 1x top to mediums and larges.

I used hydrocortisone around mine. I had to let the stuff just fall off on it's own and it took weeks to do so I just applied the cream.
