When is it ok to start drinking coffee?

Yes, I get that if I overeat. Have had some bad bouts after eating too much sugar and/or fat. I had too much to eat earlier - I don't get clear signs of fullness- after going back for a bit more and ended up being sick and feeling quite rough. I usually have to have a lie down until it passes. It doesn't happen too much now though if I am careful. The other thing about eating later - I had that with the band and still do now. It's not I can't eat, I just don't really feel like anything until about 10 ish and then I don't feel like much. I do get hungry and sometimes I can't get the food in my mouth fast enough and then I can feel ill. I don't think many people seem to get that though and can easily forget to eat.

    Hi There!

Hi Haley, welcome to VST. Glad you're doing so well. I have just had to do some quick calculations as I work in pounds and stones and easily get confused! I used to be more familiar with kilos when I lived in Germany but that is a lot time ago now. Everyone is really friendly and helpful on this site and I am sure many will be along later to wish you well xxx

Good post! Glad you're doing so well xxx
  7. This wasn't an issue for me as my surgeon was very experienced and had performed other abdominal surgery on me so I put me trust in him. I'm not being facetious here so don't take it the wrong way but I am just curious - are there a lot of obese people in Mexico and is that why the surgeons are so experienced?

If you're worried about constipation try adding some Benefiber to your (I was going to say coffee!) tea in a morning and that will help. Doc told me it was fine to take laxatives as well if there was a problem. Peristalsis does slow down after surgery, but a lot of people on here do report having bouts of diarrhoea.

When is it ok to start drinking coffee?

Interesting about the Caffeine Tiff. I wasn't told to avoid it before or after my surgery and although I don't drink coffee in huge quantities I 'carried on as normal'. I wished I had cut it out before my op as I had terrible headaches from the morphine and anesthesia and it makes me wonder whether or not the caffeine contributed to that. It was only when I started working with young children that I started experiencing bouts of dizziness on standing upright again and after reading comments on here, that I decided to cut out the caffeine. I'm not sure if it has helped or not, I don't think I get dizzy quite as much, but I do make myself eat before I go out as well, which I wasn't doing properly before as I didn't feel hungry. I still have the occasional cappucino when I go out but sometimes if I overdo the caffeine and sugar (caramel syrup is fave of mine in my coffee!) I can feel quite rough with palpitations and feel sick. In my opinion, limiting caffeine can only be good thing really.

Hi Xbander, so glad to hear you're doing well. I meant to post a message up earlier but have been so busy lately. Sounds like you are doing ok with the diet. It's right that different surgeons prescribe slightly different diet plans. I followed mine's advice but also looked to info on the internet, plus advice here. I was on clears for 3 days and then had runny blended food for about 3 weeks, progressing slowly to more textured stuff. I think the main thing is to take it easy and not to try running before you can walk. I also supplemented with some Protein shakes to ensure I kept protein levels up. Also I think that 'jelly' (English English) is what they call 'jam' in the States. 'Jello' is what English people call jelly. Am sure I have got that right! Good luck with it and keep us posted on your progress xxx

  13. Hi Pete, My band slipped after 12 months, was repositioned and then it slipped again soon after for no known reason like yours. It couldn't be filled, I suffered from horrendous reflux and indigestion and I started gaining weight again. I had the choice of having it removed and not having any further surgery (which was very tempting) or going for the revision to sleeve. I went for it as I knew and my surgeon knew that I would definitely regain all my lost weight - it was a sure thing! I have no regrets. I am still losing weight, albeit very slowly now, but it is coming off and not going back on. Plus I am healthier, more confident etc. etc. Revision surgery is riskier but you do need to be honest with yourself and do your research. Also, I am not sure why and I might be corrected here but I think that most surgeons prefer to revise to the sleeve rather than the RNY as it is a safer option. Am sure that you will be given accurate and helpful advice on this site. Welcome and good luck!

Do you consume more calories than you think?

I'm going to try doing that as I haven't managed to quit the habit of grazing in the evenings. I'm ok throughout the day and don't particularly think about food but as soon as the evening arrives I can't stop craving and nibbling on stuff I shouldn't.

    Constipation

Have all seen the film Thunderpants? Well, that's what I'm like when I take Lactulose!
  16. Thank you very much everyone x

  17. I was a bit reluctant to be the first to jump in here but I think that my hunger has diminished since my revision. I can go for quite a while and forget to eat, but, when I do I have to be very careful not to stuff myself with too much or eat it too quickly. My band worked very well for me until it slipped and I found that I recognised the fullness signs far earlier than I do now, but I do find that if I am strict with myself and only put a small portion on a small plate I am fine. Sometimes I do snack but that's habit and 'head hunger' more than anything, but I can't and don't really binge anymore. Lots of people here will have varied experiences x
  18. I have also posted on other threads that my husband's grandmother had a partial gastrectomy years ago and lived until she was 87. She died from an unrelated illness.

I am not sure where to post this question...

I was concerned about this although luckily it wasn't an issue in the end, but I had planned on asking my doctor for the pill as I didn't want the embarrassment or inconvenience on top of my operation as well. As Tiffy says they are well prepared for it and you won't be the first.

    desperate and afraid

I get what you're saying about wanting some evidence of the long-term effects of this surgery and I was the same after having a band and it failing but if it helps, people do have to have partial gastrectomies for all sorts of medical reasons and my husband's grandmother had one when was about 50 and didn't die until she was 87 from an unrelated illness. She always had to stick to small portions and was sick now and then - just like vsg patients, but otherwise she was fine, nor did she ever get fat!

    desperate and afraid

Hi Cat, There's not much I can add except to emphasise, and I will be quite blunt here, that with a BMI of 50 you are probably going to die early from an obesity-related illness anyway and you need to weigh up the pros and cons. It's very easy, with so many obese people around these days, to delude ourselves by thinking that we aren't that bad really, but society is getting bigger and bigger on the whole and it's not normal or healthy. I had a BMI of 48 2 years ago and I was umming and aahing over it and trying this diet and that...in the end I had to take the bull by the horns and do something about it, and then I opted for the band thinking to myself that as it was a reversible operation and once I had lost the weight I could have it removed, I would be fine and never put on weight again! I was still deluding myself then that I didn't really have that big a problem and I was wrong. It is major surgery and it is a scary prospect to everyone (you just wouldn't be normal if you didn't have some worries) but you know yourself that you won't lose weight by dieting. You wouldn't be here if you could and if you're like me and addicted to food you will be even bigger in a year's time. I had a band 2 years ago, then revised to the sleeve in July this year and have lost a total of 115 lbs to date. I am very, very happy and much healthier as a result. You will get lots of very good advice on this site from people whose surgery has been a great success and from those who unfortunately did suffer from some complications. What you need to do now is research and be honest with yourself in making what is not always an easy decision. Good luck Cat Helenxxx
  23. I agree with what the others say and whilst it's good that you have done all your research and are aware of pros and cons, I think you should try relaxing now and just concentrate on the advantages and how great you are going to look and feel. I nearly backed out just hours before my op and it was nerves, all the what ifs and they are just that - what ifs. Dying from obesity and diabetes are sure things really. You have think to yourself, 'what is the alternative?' and then take the opportunity you have. Chill out now and try not to get yourself into a state over it xxx

    I'm finally doing it!

I say the same as everyone else! Good luck for Tuesday and see you on the losing side xxx

Thankyou again! I would never have stood and posed for a photo like that before. It's taken two years and I still have a little way to go yet but I have no regrets - it's the best thing I ever did for my health, confidence, the lot!
