Banded on 6/2 and the gas pain is excrutiating
Sistersue replied to mindy327's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It will go away, but you can help it a lot. First of all walk, walk, and walk some more. If you have to, do laps around the house or yard. I walked 6 blocks about 4 times a day. Also gas-x comes in dissolvable strips. Take those as needed. You have to drink unless you want to end up in the hospital. I put myself on a schedule of walking, drinking protein and water, taking meds so got it all in. I think it was day 4 I felt better. Yes it is normal to drop a lot of weight at the beginning especially if you didn't have a preop diet. Mostly you are losing water at this point. Please follow your dr instructions, it will get better. -

What is your BMI? We see lots of people on here with relatively little to lose who choose the lap band not only to lose weight but to keep it off. -
Poll: Which shake is the best?
Sistersue replied to mamajen1221's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm with mountain girl. I can't stand most of protein shakes by themselves. I use the GNC in flavored soy protein with fruit yogurt and crystal light added. This week mangos were ripe so I use a whole mango, with one scoop of powder, 1/2 c nonfat plain yogurt, one small banana, and enough crystal light to blend it. It tastes good and really pretty! -
what does stuck feeling feel like?
Sistersue replied to isabella2's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, for me it is painful feeling in my chest like a cramp. Also my salivary glands go into hyperdrive, slimeing. I feel like I need to burp but ifi do burp more than air comes up, PBing. If you stuck last night then what you feel now is the swelling most likely. Drink hot tea (decaf), that usually helps. -

4 days post-op... help!
Sistersue replied to 189shamrock's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree walking helps the most but a heating pad also helps, or in my case a laptop and a 15 lb cat. -

You may want to schedule an appointment with the nutritionist too and have them go over what and how to eat. Take in a weeks worth of brutally honest food journals and get them to help you. -

MARCH 2011 BANDSTERS!
Sistersue replied to MarcyLoo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Y&B, you may just not have enough in your band. I work with a woman who it took her almost a year to get enough fluid in her band. One, OMG, the weight is just coming off her. You need to stop the carbonated drinks, they can cause your band to slip. I've lost 53lbs so far and I have restriction, but full now isn't the same as before for me. I know when I am satisfied and when I'm not hungry but truly full is hard. I go for satisified. -

Day 4 post op...shake issues
Sistersue replied to jen120's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You will feel hungry as long as you aren't getting the protein. It doesn't have to taste good, just do it. You stomach needs to heal and protein is necessary for that. Also you can pull and weaken you stitches eating too early leading to a slip later on. We are eating for entertainment but for nutrition. Once you move on to the later stages then worry about taste but even then, remember, that's how we got into this mess. I now find the healthier foods taste better to me. -
Drinking while eating
Sistersue replied to Hungrybetty's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The idea at the beginning is to not have your stomach digesting food. The muscles of your stomach contract during digestion and that cn weaken the stitches leading to a slip later on. Go back to liquids. Do what your doctor told you. -
Bathroom problem- Constipation
Sistersue replied to Beachy_Babs's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I plan to start adding a fiber supplement to my morning shake. It's so bad at times I literally drop a couple of pounds when it get things moving again. -
Keep in mind that eating all kinds of yummy thing is how we got herein the first place. I am a 15 year recovering addict so I saw the post op period as my detox time. Time to learn to get into my body what it needed not eating for entertainment. Mentally I was much hungrier than I was physically. I didn't watch TV during this time because of all the food commercials. I also live alone so that helped. Of course detox from food was easier, no danger of dying and no DTs, but mentally it's hard. Take care of yourself. Exercise helps, mostly walking. I also took baths to distract myself. Get a massage, a pedicure, whatever to pamper yourself without food. Keep your eyes on the prize, think of your protein intake as medicine. When mushies come beware of over eating. You have to learn all over how to eat. Your calorie intake is so restricted the food thar goes into your mouth shouldn't be junk. It doesn't have to taste bad though and you will find that your taste buds recalibrate if you cut out high salt, fried and sugar foods for a while. After weeks of drinking only water diet drinks like crystal light are too sweet for me. It's a new start.

How many calories are you getting? Most Docs recommend around 1000 a day. Do you exercise? You absolutely must get you water and protein in. I do best with 70+ grams of protein and around 100 oz of water. Keep in mind that you have less to loose than some of us so you loss may be slower. You've lost almost 1/4 of your weight I. 3 mos. If you can keep that up you should be fine.

How long after surgery did you see the lbs start to go down?
Sistersue replied to lee_nyc's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It took about 5 days to loose the water weight from my IV. The I lost pretty steadily. I was on clear liquids for 2 weeks. Drink your water, walk, and get as much protein as you can. -
Hungry for real food !
Sistersue replied to malta760's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know how you feel I was 2 weeks of clear liquid, I had to drink Isopure, for to afford it I had to get a case of the same flavor, the grape one. I hated it. Imagine two weeks of something you hate. I did it because I knew that I had to get to the point where I wasn't living to eat but eating to live. I saw it as medicine. Sugar free jello and Popsicles helped a lot. At the end of the two weeks I was ready for mushies and even dreamed about them. I lost about 20 lbs in those two weeks too. Look at it as something you have to do for awhile. I literally at the end would hold my nose and try not toilet the Isopure hit my tongue. I have since tried other flavors and liked those, like punch flavor. -
First of all do you track your calories, protein, and water intake? If you don't you should. Do you exercise?

hellp me i postpond my sergery due on 31st may
Sistersue replied to maria1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Dearnorthofborder, my surgeon wouldn't do surgery on someone who has unrealistic expectations of the surgery for one single reason. People who fail at this can bedevistated by the failure. Some people see him as hard for not giving people what they want but after reading posts frompeop,e who didn't loose think he is right. Better she wait and learn and then do it. Right now she isn't ready. -
Cocoa bean, I like your attitude!

I don't understand

FYI, fills are no big deal but it may take several for you to get restriction. Water helps with hunger and keep sugar free snacks and high protein snacks n hand -
I don't understand
Sistersue replied to jamiesdoingit's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Jamie, that happens to a lot of people. It happened to me too, I have since started loosing again. I think there are a lot of factors that contribute to the plateau. First is that yo body is adjusting to the new way you are eating and is now conserving energy. Do you get cold easier now? My body temperature has been running around 96 degrees so my body is conserving emery that way. Also a a lot of the weight we loose in the first few weeks is water weight because we are drinking so much, then when we star eating food we gain some of that back, especially if you like salt. Also watch for constipation, that can make it seem like you aren't losing. What to do then? Make sure you journal all you food on a site like livestrong.com so you can watch you sodium and protein intake and log your water. If you aren't exercising, start as long as your doctor approves. You should at least be able to walk. Yo cat track that as well on livestrong.com. Once you body quits freaking out over the cut in calories the scale will start to move again.
