Anyone else experience a long wait time before surgery?
Kami172000 replied to phthaloblue's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i was getting very VERY discouraged (im sure thats what the insurance wanted) because i did my blood work to make sure i was healthy enough got my primary drs ok and sent referral insur declined due to no 6 months of supervised weight watch so after about 2 months i finally sent in paperwork to do my 6 months. i could have been almost half way there but thanks to the insur im behind!! like i have heard it might be a long process but well worth the wait!! -
Loved ones trying to talk you out of Lap Band Surgery.
Kami172000 replied to rachelmiller1978's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
my husband is semi supportive he wants me to do it but he doesnt want to wait and go through the 6 months of weight management bc he wants a baby right now. my parents are happy im finally doing something about my weight but i have had one person(who is a body builder) tell me to lose it on my own... ok easy for you!! skinny people dont understand bc they are lucky to be skinny and healthy and over weight people are jealous they arent going to be as healthy and looking good. -
I am miserable because i am fat. I am way over weight and the insurance dont think my problems, not to mention my weight, isnt enough for surgery. i am about 5'4 and 300lbs with a bmi of about 50, i have hip problems, knee problems, swollen ankle problems, back problems, and due to those problems i can not exercise, right on the line of having diabetes, i have had one child 4 years ago gained 100lbs during my pregnancy, also saw a nutritionist during my pregnancy. Yet all these medical problems are not enough to approve my consultation to see a surgeon. They said my bmi must be over 60 or have 6 months of professional weight management. 6 months?!?!?! who has 6 MORE months to wait around and not do anything about their weight!!!!! not me... im so discouraged right now. i waited like a month to get denied and now im having to wait another month to hear back from my appeal... and then for them to tell me that i will need to go another 6 months to even see a surgeon and then finish all the rest of the tests and stuff they have you do! ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... i just wish things were more black and white then this. Check list: over weight at least 100lbs CHECK health issues due to weight CHECK bmi 40-60 CHECK APPROVED! simple right? why do they need to make it so dang hard for over weight ppl to get healthier! thats all they rant and rave about on the news and online every where you turn its about over weight ppl and better your health right?? so why does it seem impossible to get this surgery?! i was super excited to know that my insurance would pay for lapband and now to find out quote unquote "because to the budget cuts they are very strict on who can get the lapband" so ill rephrase what that means, we dont want to pay for it if we dont absolutely life or death which means you are on your death bed have to. i guess i can quite ranting and raving myself. just needed to let out a little steam

thank you. i totally agree you always here about the over weight ppl needing to do this or that to help with their health but when it comes down to it, its not about us its about the money. we shouldnt need a pschy eval to get a tool to help us loose weight and have a better life and if a 6 month professional diet would have helped i would have lost weight when i did it 4 years ago when i went to a nutr for my pregnancy!! but that didnt do one little thing to help me.
-
its not that im not committing to change my life style and my whole life for that matter i know how to eat and i do my best but i have already been to a nutritionist when i was pregnant i was taught how to eat and what to eat and how much of this food group i should eat. i have waited all my life for something to help me loose weight and i never was able to due to money situations. all my life i have tried to do the fab diet, eat healthy, go to the gym, work with a trainer, nothing ever worked. all my problems i have physical stop me from exercising the way i need to be. that all im saying is we go through all this for so long and instead of looking at all that the insurance companies just want to prolong your time to a healthier you. i feel like they are hoping you wont go through your 6 months so they dont have to pay for it
-
that was my fault the ones who denied it was the insurance doctors?? i guess all my stuff goes through another doctor that i dont see and goes off what my primary dr says and determines if its needed or not
-
thanks. im just kind of on a timed schedule im getting married next spring and i wanted to fit into a decent size wedding dress by spring of 2012 but with all this extra going to ruin that
-
well when i called the insurance to find out if they paid for lapband they said they did if my primary dr agreed it was needed. so thats exactly what i did i talked to my dr and she agreed and sent ina referal
-
completely normal people that have no issues with weight do not see what we go through i had a body builder tell me i could do it myself dont take the easy way and get surgery! ok mr body builder easy for you to say

This is the weekend I'll tell hubby
Kami172000 replied to NJGirl32's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
He might be alittle upset you waited this long to tell him but any good husband will get over it and be supportive. good luck -
if that wasnt the truth i dont know what is!!!! they made it not work for them!!!!
-
oh ya!! i def agree!! they are the type that can shove anything down their throat and not gain an oz, as for me i smell it and i add 5lbs to my climbing scale!! like i said earlier post loosing weight is not easy in any way
-
i know how you feel!! friday was my first step towards getting the band... i went to my doc and got my blood work.. i have seen so many post about waiting and about having to be under watch for 6 months for weight management.. i dont have alll that time to wait!! i want to start getting healthy and to a normal weight starting now!! who has 6 months or so to just wait around to get healthy it should be no longer then a few weeks!! keep your head up, i def am trying to!
-
exactly!! i couldnt believe he said that!! its not easy loosing weight with or without surgery! ya i had alot of my friends sticking up for me and very happy i want to do this i try not to listen to the negative ppl i just like to hear all my real friends who are happy im doing something about my weight and not just sitting back and killing myself slowly! it feels good to know i have my friends on my side. people can say and think what they want but im doing this for ME!! best wishes <3

from start to surgery?
Kami172000 replied to Kami172000's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
thank you i am also a mom do have a fiancee(not his child)and planning on getting married and taking a bunch of days off isnt really an option either thats why i did my first appt and then went straight to blood work. anything i can get done in one day i will. i have been researching b4 i even went to the dr and asked about it, i know im ready! the problem is in about a year we were planning on getting pregnant and i did all the research on being pregnant with the band and he is dead set on being pregnant by then. and he was only on the band wagon if that was still able to happen, he said if not i should wait till after but im not putting more baby weight on top of this body, he is INSANE if he thinks im dong that. he is happy i want to do this and get healthy but its not ideally how he would like it. i just dont want it to be a year process and then mess up all our plans for our family. i have watched videos on youtube about that it was as soon as a month but maybe they were an ideal candidate or something i dont know... i just dont want time to be a factor in getting discouraged... -
I was curious to know how long it took for many of you from the day you went to your doctor and told him/her that you wanted to get the lap band to the day of your surgery??? i have seen a lot of people talking about a month and a half anywhere to 6 months?! i know that every one is different and their circumstances are different but i just need an idea. i told the doctor all about me trying to loose weight since i was 16(now 24 and being over weight my whole life) in the mean time having a baby gaining 100lbs! diet, exercise, pills, nutritionist(gained weight with them!), starvation, carbs ect. and how all i lost was that 3lbs of water weight no matter how hard i tried. she took one look at me and my weight gain since my last appt asked me a few questions about my smoking i told her its done i will quit and she said i need to if i want surgery and i researched how long nicotine stays in your system which depending on how much smoked from 2 to 60 days im calculating about a week for myself she sent me on my way to do blood work and i would see her in about a week with the results and talk about the next steps... before even asking my primary dr about lap band i called my insurance myself and asked them if they cover it and they said they do so i know that shouldnt be a problem. my concern is since i have tried all these weight loss fails will i be sent to another weight management center before the insurance will approve it? they said nothing about that over the phone they said if your dr approves you we will pay? i should know in a few days about my blood work i hope all goes well!

i read up and depending on how much you smoke it takes about 4 days(on a light smoker) and up to 2 months on a pack a day or more smoker to clear nicotine from the system. i, being a smoker was told friday i had to quit and monday i started fresh... i have had a few but i dont want to prolong my surgery for anything!! best of luck!!!
-
i had a guy i knew from back in elem school tell me on facebook that i shouldnt do this i need to loose it on my own and it just takes dedication and i just need to get a trainer(he "knows and awesome one" ) dont take the easy way out. after 9 years of trying to loose weight and 285lbs at 5'5 i think its time to take alittle more of a drastic step... let me tell you the good part this gentleman is a body builder!! someone who it obviously comes easier to telling me i dont need surgery. i was super mad!! dont let dumb people get in the way of your happiness and being healthy! pamR: as long as your mom is there and happy to help you then thats all that matters! im sure if you asked your husband he would help you but like you said he has work, its not like your going into open heart surgery. good luck to all of you and stay positive
-
you had to be 2 months??? oh my gosh thats a long time! i cant wait 2 months to finish up
-
i went for my blood work the day of my reg dr appt and they told me i had to quit smoking also before they would do surgery that was friday morning. i had 1/2 a pack left i smoked it during the weekend to start fresh monday morning and it is hard... but i want this done so bad that im willing to quit... now as far as it showing in blood work i dont believe they can find it that way they prob just be going by your word but from what i hear smoking has alot to do with the healing process and can really mess it up. good luck!!

will i be approved??
Kami172000 replied to Kami172000's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
wow so being over weight isnt enough for them?? thats ridiculous!! i have done so much research that said its better if you have all those problems but being over 100lbs is the key. hmmm that kind of scares me!! im so nervous for my apt tomorrow, if i dont get this surgery i will be over weight for the rest of my life!! and in a few years i want to have another baby and i dont want to add more baby weight on top of my weight now! i gained 100lbs being preg alot had to do with gust diabetes
