From my understanding with ulcers you have to change your eating habits. You can say that due to the ulcer and surgery, you have to follow a strict diet plan and with that you are experiencing weight loss. And say what a great side effect that you get.. Unless you are willling to share, just leave it at that. Good Luck

weight gain after surgery?? can this be possible?
klus263 replied to shaundra's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I lost 10 lbs preop with a 7 day liquid diet. I weighed 212 when I went into the hospital. When I cam I weighed 224. I was only in the hospital ONE day. This was all from the IV fluids. It will come off. I lost a lot the first 2 months but now I have really slowed down and it is 1 to maybe 2 pounds per week. I was hoping for more weekly but I will be patient. Hang in there. -
I don't have an answer yet on this I have an appt with my Nut on the 28th to actually discuss this issue, I just started working out and I am burning around 400-450 calories during a workout but I can only eat around 600-700 calories a day. I can barely eat more than 1/2 cup of food at a time. So hopefully I can get some good direction in regards to this. I am following my nuts advice as she is the specialist in regards to VSG. My trainor is understanding but not well versed and she recommends that I speak them directly as they are better equipped to deal with my dietary needs. I will post back once I met with her.

Today Surgeon Called Me A Worrier-Day 12
klus263 replied to KabinKitty's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I started at 232. I had a 7 day liquid diet and got down to 212 on the day of surgery. I gained 12 pounds due to all the IV fluids. My first 2 weeks was losing what I had gain to get back to 212. I am 2 1/2 months out and I am down to 179. I had several stalls and have slowed down to a few pounds a week. Give it time. You just had surgery and it does take time for your body to heal and adjust. If you were not a big eater before it may take a you a bit longer to see results. Take your measurements. The times I did not lose on the scale, I was still losing inchces. It will work for you but it may just be a little slower. Hang in there. -
In our meeting, we were told no to carbonated drinks. Not only does it cause discomfort, it increases the risk for ulcers. We used coke to clean the battery connectors on our cars when they are corroded. Just thinking of that going into my stomach is keeping me from drinking soda. I gave up soda November 23. I am not sure if I want to start again. I loved the bubbles surging through me but I am so much healthier with giving them up. It is a personal preference.

My 6 month check up is next month so I will definately ask about it. I am looking to change from the chewables to pills (I have no problems swallowing pills at 2+ months out) and so far I found the Kirkland brand at costco has the same % of my chewables and they are cheaper. I also have my 3 month follow up with the doctor in 2 weeks so I will ask him.

I was too apprehensive about the unknown. I am just over 2 months after surgery and I am lucky to say I was one who did not have any type of issues. I am loving the results so far. I am can know say that I am halfway to goal and am feeling wonderful.

I have a Ninja blender with multiple attachments. Very easy to clean and with multiple sizes and a lid it can go straight to the fridge. I also have a stick blender (aka the boat motor). I am looking to add a dehydrator to make my own jerky as we hike a lot and also a ice cream maker to start making protein ice cream from the website of the world according to eggface. I just purchased a mini food saver since I don't eat as much to freeze smaller portions.

The carb monster is going to be the death of me...bring on day 3 pre-op
klus263 replied to brandynd's topic in Pre-op Diets and Questions
I so relate. My 2 week preop was a full liquid diet so It was really tough but I took it one day at a time. Since surgery it has gotten much better. I still keep my carbs very low to maximize the weight loss. Hang in there, it will get better. -
I have mixed it with Water, gatorade, propel, V8 juice. I take it twice a week.

I do work from home 4-10 hours days. I had surgery on a Wednesday and returned to work on the following Wednesday. It was rough the first week and I was glad I only had to 2 work 3 days the first week. It helps to get up every hour and walk around for a few minutes. I did have hour lunch and walked around the parking lot to keep up the excersice.....and remember sip, sip, sip.

Anyone on vitamins?
klus263 replied to learningintuition's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I do use the Bariatric Advantage offered by my doctor's office. It is $20 for the vitamin and $22 for the calcium. I also get the sublingual vitamin B for $9. Currently they are chewables but now that I can swallow I may be converting to regular pills here shortly. But I will take them until I am cleared from the doctor that I am getting enough vitamins from real food. -
Body chemistry changes with weight loss
klus263 replied to lisaenidok's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My doctor's office require us to attend a support group and a 3 hour nutritional class which we had to take a signed certificate to their office prior to having a surgery date. The nutrional class and support group coordinator is actually a bypass patient and she tells it like it is. Our support group mets monthly so we do hear about the issues and such and are able to talk to others who experience it. As long as I live in the area, I will be doing these monthly support groups. Of course we have the forum here but it is also nice to actually see and talk to others. -
I was first considering the band as my insurance did not cover the sleeve and it was not talked about much during my seminar. Since I had to do 6 months with a PCP first it was a while before I met with the surgeon. He suggested the sleeve over the band and I am so happy he did. I weighed 232 at my first doctor appointment, I was sleeved Dec 1st. After surgery I weighed 224 lbs. Today I was 179.9. I could not have had this success with the band. I don't have to worry abouts fills, slippage, rejection, breakage, food restrictions. Look over some of the postings from Tiffykins-she had a lap band to sleeve revision. My husband is so impress he is in his approval stage and hope to be sleeved sometime this spring. I have no regrets in removing a huge portion of my stomach.

The term for slow heart rate is bradycardio. I also have it. After surgery my heart rate was around 44 while I was in the hospital. The nurses had spoken to the doctor but he was okay with it. I did fine and never had any issues. I just recently started working out with a fitness trainer and we keep my heart rate average a little lower then what they usually suggest. I am doing just fine.

Once a day for 14 days after surgery. This was a new regime that the my doctor's office started upon realizing the issues of blood clots. After seeing the story from another poster who developed a clot, I did my shots daily. It still took me about 5 minutes do to as I hated them but I suffered through it and gave myself some nice bruises some days.

In my opinion, if Powerade is what you can drink and this is giving you fluids while you are sick. Drink, Drink, Drink. Keeping hydrated is the most important.

For the acid reflux, they actually found a hiatal hernia which they repaired at the time of the sleeve. Since then I have not had a single bout of reflux or nausea or vomiting. I do take now prilose OTC-I was on liquid nexium for the first 2 months but insurance changed and it was too expensive to continue. I am so happy that I had the sleeve. They actually found benign polyps in my stomach that was removed so I am grateful as this never would have been found if I did not have surgery and down the road would have led to possible more issues. I am healthier and so much happier.

I am using the bariatric advantage, our office sells different flavors and at our pre-op nutrition seminar, we got to sample them to see which flavors we liked. I never had any problems with the nausea. As for the laxative effect....I do not see this in me at all. I have had to Miralax to my regime twice a week to keep things moving nice and softly (TMI). I have been looking at the costco brand (Kirkland) and they appear to be very similar in the vitamin % so I may switch them to as they are a little lower in cost.

Not a single regret or tear. I was never nervous before surgery and normally I would be having dry heaves and throwing up (I have a very nervous tummy) but I walked into the hospital so sure and postitive. I am just over 60 days out and down 44 lbs since surgery. I may reach goal in less then 6 months total. I could have never done this without surgery. Go for it....you will not regret it.

6 weeks, doc dissapointed in weight loss
klus263 replied to lolli's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I met today with a personal trainer at the gym I just joined. I let her know that I had weight loss surgery and I that my calorie intake is low at this point. I just recently got it up to around 700 calories per day. She advised that I need to be careful with such a low intake with burning too many calories. I know that I will need to increase my calorie intake to at least 800 or higher on the days I excerise as it is not healthy to burn more calories than you take it. So try to increase the calorie as you excerise and that may help. Don't get depressed-look you lost 22 pounds that most of us would not have lost if it wasn't for this surgery. My doctor has never given me a number to lose-mine is all self imposed. Hopefully your next nutritionist is familar with weight loss surgery. Search the website I know I have come across several diets that other doctors and clinics have actually posted for their patients. This may help you. I am currently getting all my Protein from foods and not from shakes. I do track what I eat and find that my body loses better when my carbs are around 30 but others do better at a higher number. Keep track and look back at the weeks when you had a better weight loss and see what did you eat differently that week. Hang in there!!! It is a huge learning curve out there and you will get. -
My go to clear liquid was chicken broth. I drank it like most people drink coffee. I would fill a hot mug and take it with my while traveling. Congratulations on getting approved. Remember after surgery...walk, walk, walk.

Hospital stay....Is one night stay enough??
klus263 replied to mcast's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
I was also only one night. My night in the hosptial was bad as my room was right outside of the nurses desk and they forgot to turn up the heat when I got to my room, so I was cold all night. But I walked almost every hour. I don't think there was another sleeve patieint so I had the hallways to myself. I was released by 10 am the next morning, My DH and I went directly to walmart to fill my prescriptions. I went home and took a nap then we went to a park and did a small walk. Since I had no complications-no gas/nausea-One day was fine for me. I also had a hiatal hernia repair.
