    H. Pylori

I was told a week after surgery that H Pylori was present in my stomach and that I should go on antibiotics to get rid of it. I also had an incisional infection at the time so antibiotics should be perfect to handle both issues. Here is when I think my problems started. I am allergic to penicillin, so I was given Bactrim and Tetracycline. Bactrim is very large and Tetracycline tastes very nasty. Just out of surgery it is impossible to take pills whole, so they have to be crushed. Bactrim is okay to crush but the Tetracycline capsule's taste would make gasoline taste bad. After surgery, many people get a huge gag reflex and bad flavors can make you throw up. I took about 5 days of my antibiotics and then just could not stomach them. I had to stop taking them altogether. My incision infection did heal and time went on okay for about 3 months. Lost lots of weight, was feeling okay. However in the 3rd month, I could not eat, or drink, was taken to the ER and then released. 5 days later I passed out with Sepsis. I had developed a leak in the stomach. My wife was told that I would not live the first night. Now there is a lot more to this story, but I was hospitalized for 5 months, 2 in a coma. I suspect that the H Pylori issue might have caused the breakdown of my stomach lining and the fact that I might have developed some superbug or something because I could not take all my antiobiotics to clear the H Pylori. My suggestion is to take antibiotics and get rid of this H Pylori BEFORE you have surgery. Because if you try to get rid of it after the surgery, it might not erradicate it. And remember if you get surgery outside of the US, most insurance companies will not cover a dime of your complications. Feel free to contact me with any questions. Les

That's exactly what I have, Anthem BC/BS PPO Blue Access
  4. If you are referring to the leak test they give you a couple days out, then yes maybe Dr. Aceves never had a leak in that time frame. But I can tell you that he HAS had patients who have had leaks later down the road. I am in the over 2% that have complications and mine were the worst case imaginable outside of dying. I am going to post my whole story in the next week or so, but to sum it up quickly, I had the sleeve in Mexico, had a leak 3 months later, spent 5 months in the hospital with sepsis, 2 in a coma. My wife was told first night I would most likely die. Insurance DENIED all bills, 1.5 million to date. If I would have had the surgery in the US and had problems, they carry a separate insurance policy to cover problems after the fact. Keep this in mind as you pay the less expensive surgeries out of the country. As of today, I am bankrupt, lost my home and was denied even physical therapy to help me walk again after serious dropfoot and muscle atrophy. Oh yeah, and I developed a huge abdominal hernia a week after I got home. Surgery in 1 year to fix that. Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

    What am I doing wrong?

You had 70lbs to goal. I don't think you are behind at all. Almost 30% of excess weight lost, just stay the course.

    No Food Days?

Some days, time just gets away from me and it's 12 pm and I have had nothing to eat. It's those days where I miss my Protein goal. And I refuse to eat another Protein Drink. It's 7 weeks out and for the most part, unless I am totally bored, food is an afterthought now. It's just not what makes me excited anymore.
  8. Today I got bored with all the drink choices in the fridge, so I opened a can of diet A & W root beer. I let the fizz go down and sipped it slowly with no effect. It was so good, I had a 2nd.

    Carbs, carbs, carbs...

yes... and warm liquids really tend to make the pouch feel more relaxed.

    I'm So Freaking Happy!

Good work girl. Stay away from that fried chicken and you will go far. I understand the thought process, "what am I gonna have to eat today?" It's like a driving force for each day that is no longer even a thought.

    Carbs, carbs, carbs...

I love a good bowl of Fiber One Cereal in the morning. I can get down about a serving and it's great for fiber. As for carbs, I think it's rather insignificant at the early stages because as long as you get your Protein in, you probably are not going to have much room for carbs in bulk. One thing I am addicted to this week is pork and Beans, not the beanie weenie with the fake hot dogs either. They go down like butter and surprisingly, I can eat an 8oz can, in about 30 minutes.
  12. About 5 weeks out. Today, I made a can of pork and beans, mixed in a little ketchup and splenda for sweetness. It took me 1 hour probably, but I finished an 8oz can. I am shocked at the amount, however, when you chew them to bits, I guess it goes down like liquid. Super Yummy they were.

    So I overdid it today!

Thanks all, I am eating a thin crust pizza so all food is not bad, this seems to get me past some of the extra acid I have. My egg and toast tasted fine this morning, my problems are obviously stemming from the gastritis. Anybody have this issue? And no I am not getting in all I should because I have to swallow 8 nasty pills a day that fills my stomach and then top it off with Pepto Bismol, which is so thick, vomiting may happen. When does the gag reflex thing go away? It's just wrong to puke over brushing your tongue.

    So I overdid it today!

I am 5 weeks out and I just can't understand overeating. I have gastritis they tell me and the meds make me sick, I have stopped taking them today as they made me throw up. The sheer taste of the capsule does it. I am still so lightheaded I cannot work and I do not want to eat. Everything seems to taste so nasty. This morning I had an egg and 1/2 slice of toast and the feeling it makes in my stomach is not pleasant. It's not like the stomach of old being really full, it's the feeling of nausea/discomfort. Anybody have any thoughts?, Protein drinks are nasty, brushing my teeth makes me gag. I can't even change my son's diaper with vomiting. Help please.

    Sleep apnea?

I have never been through a sleep study, but when I slept pre surgery, I would inhale and let out a huge "steam train" sound. Now 50 lbs lost after surgery my wife tells me I am quiet. FWIW.
  16. Hi all. Just wanted to report my first month out from surgery was okay. Had trouble getting in fluids, Protein shakes are gross, many pills for infections. Nothing tastes good. However, that being said. I lost 51.2lbs. Not bad for 1 month with no exercise at all. It's tough to exercise when you are lightheaded and nauseous.
  17. I have used Nasonex pre and post op with no effect. I also take Zyrtec tablets.
  18. Hey it's the 8th, Dalisgirl was scheduled for surgery yesterday. Let's hope she went through with it and all is great for her.

    Beginning to eat solids (suggestions?)

I am on my 2nd day of soft foods, but am having trouble keeping them down. Cottage cheese, applesauce, pudding, all good. Tonight I had chopped up chicken (moist) and mashed green beans. About 15 minutes after I ate a very small portion, I threw up the orange drink I had prior to the meal and then right after the food I ate. Could this be because I drank right up to the point of eating but not after?

    Mushies early?

Oh, the comment came for a man, so that must be bad or the "source" as you call it. I wasn't trying to be a jerk with my comment, however you are going to have to train yourself to eat better within this first 6-12 months, because it's extremely difficult to lose more weight after this period. My wife had surgery in 2001 and went from 308 to 155, but now sit at 220. She eats like a bird and still can't lose the weight, despite exercise. Here is the basis for my point: I met this lady in Mexico that had her lap band removed, after 5 years, due to erosion. She had lost over 100 lbs to something like 115 now, but had put 30lbs back on. She went to Mexico to have her band adjusted she thought, but due to erosion, it was just removed and she was sent home to let her stomach heal. She told us that night she went to KFC to have chicken and who knows what else. She also said that for 5 years she has figured that since she could not eat more than a few bites at a time that she was eating whatever food she wanted, mostly bad foods. So my point here is that she never learned to eat healthy. She basically got a band so she could eat less of whatever she wanted. That is a terrible mindset to be in and now that her band is gone, her weight gain is inevitable. It is not going to kill you to have some soft foods early, potatoes, grits, etc... It's the continuation of these bad foods that is going to defeat you years from now.

    Mushies early?

White potatoes are the worst, esp on glycemic index. What kind of doctor suggests potatoes? NO breads, Cookies, crackers, Pasta. I mean come on people, you are fat because you ate this stuff to begin with, why try to cheat the 30 day post op diets and eat crap?
  23. I would say a definite, unless you decide to eat crap.
  24. First week under my belt, a 20 spot.
  25. I was sleeved on Monday the 15th and all is good here. Mexicali hospital is small but nice and clean. At 2 days out I am definitely feeling better. Onward and inward. LOL. Take care all, I'll post my weight graph when I figure it out. Starting weight 468 lbs.
