Should parents be able to smack children in discipline
bsubabe replied to flabuless's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
As a child care professional it is my oppinon that there are several meathods of dicipline that does nothing. or in turn can actually enable more undesirerable behaviors. One of these is "smacking a child" By this i mean hauling off and smacking a child. A spank on the rump, one open handed is ok. and does deliver a message if it is needed( btw this is also what MN state law states or something to that effect) Often times children exhibit what can be termed experimental behavior or needs behavior. The thing to remember with this is that ANY time a behavior is shown t here is a reason behind it. Lonly. bored, curious, angry, hurt, ect.. In my oppinon the best way to prevent these behaviors or to correct these is to find an alternate positive behavoir to correct it. Another thing that i feel doesnt work and there is documetned proof is "Time out" sitting in the corner ect.. When this happens the child sits there and if the7y sit too long the forget why they are sitting there. what did that accomplish.:phanvan what we do in the classroom si a "cool down" if a child is throwing a fit:angry or hurting themselves or others then we tell the child they need to calm down and physically put the child in a corner with pillows, stuffed animals exc.. maybe books, this will help the child to calm down on their own and then when the child is ready to come back to the activity they are free to on their own and nothing more is mentioned. Please keep in mind that these sugesstions have been used on preschool and under. I have not worked extensivly with older children yet and so i can only give my 2 cents for this age group. I hope i didnt sound preechy i just know what we use in the classroom and it works. -

Wow... It is one thing to get crap from strangers and to have to put up with descrimination. and that is exactly what it is... but to have your husband, the one person that should be your biggest cheerleader say that.. it had to hurt. i hope he made it right. I have family that are awful..i mentioned it earlier... Just try to keep your head up. -

Ok so i am starting this thread for those of us who are WAITING.... I am g etting impatient and it is frustrating to see people that get the band within a month of starting the process. Who else is waiting on baited breath for an aproval... waht goals do you have before surgery? I probaly have to wait till june or july to be banded and it is driving me nuts...:faint: My goals: Eat more fruits and veggies quit my late night snacking ( any ideas would be helpfull) work out 3 times a week...-* -
How long of a wait from lst meeting to surgery?
bsubabe replied to JudiM's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I have had most of my dr visits, everything is done except for the surgon visit. they are telling me that i can probably look forward to a june date. I gues they are busy... I WANT IT NOW... not in 3-4 months. they say that the wait is to make sure that you really want this and are serious about the commitment. My file goes to review april 4th... has anyone else had a LONG wait? I first went to my info session in jan... then it took 2 months to get in to the rn and dietican... grr.... but i will wait.. it is worth it.. -

well i have struggled with my weight since i was a teenager and my step mom used to charge me for every pound that i gained. ( she is a witch) then a couple of years ago i went home to visit my family and she took me aside and said" you could have warned us about your weight" ooooo that pissed me off! Ive decied i am not gong home till i loose all of my weight... and they dont know about my having the surgery.. and they wont... on a lighter note...One of the funniest things i have had happen is i work in a day care with toddlers and one day i was taking them for a walk and one of them ( cute as can be) said "teacher, baby in tummy?" it was so darn cute. i was kind of taken aback but then laughed it off and said no no baby... then he insisted lol.. ( one of the other teachers is pregnant and he knew it) I guess i looked like her... kids dont understandt hat some people are fluffy... the one that i HATE the most is " you have a preety face and have a great personality!" GRRRR it drives me nuts...:angry -
I know how you feel. I started dating my BF when i was a size 16-18 ( i miss those days). Although i did gain weight from a surgery on my knee which put me preety much sedentary for a couple of weeks, i do wonder what he thinks of me. I know he loves me and accepts me but at the same time i am not the skinny "girls " that he likes to look at. Sometimes i wonder if he is attracted to me and what will happen after my surgery and after i loose weight. However i do have the comfort that he does love me and loves me as i am... I guess the question here is "how do you feel about yourself?" I have struggled with this myself. i understand how you feel..
