Oh, it'll come, no wait, that's not the right word . . . awww geez . . .
-
Typically they say wait for about 6 weeks for strenuous activities. This will allow the incisions to heal all the way through. If it's just paddling around in a pool then maybe less but why chance it?

Paying for the sleeve myself...
Rootman replied to chesapeake girl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know this is a tremendously personal question but I was wondering what you paid as a Mexican national for the sleeve? I know that the cost is less at some sites being that Americans (or Canadians, etc) pay more but was wondering what the difference is. -
Well besides the above comments you need to remember that we are severely limited on our food intake. You need to choose carefully what you eat and mainly concentrate on eating protein rather than carbs or vegetables. Protein gives you the "most bang for your buck" out of any food, so it's best to eat t at the expense of other foods like salads.

Does it really work?????
Rootman replied to Floppie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When I was having my sleeve done a gal was there having plication done AFTER a sleeve about 1 year prior. She readily admitted that she ate too much from the start and it had only gotten worse as she healed and was able to eat with less pressure from the sleeve restriction. If I remember correctly, she had lost maybe 40 pounds and put most of it back on in a years time. She was positive that she was going to fail again for her because she was hopelessly addicted to food. I did not keep track of her but often wonder how it turned out for her. -
I'm a guy and am excited too. There is an "Adult wellness" center near me that really ought to be named a "Senior Wellness Center" as you have to be 50 years old to join. Well in April I turn 50 so I plan on joining on my BD. They have a lap pool and a high heated aerobics pool. I HATE exercising but I LOVE to swim. The only suit I have is a 4X which now I could practically put two of me in. I'm anxious to pick up a new suit and take the plunge.

Taste and Smell Sensitivity?
Rootman replied to dgoulet133's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yep, I actually had a LOT of problems with stuff I just love tasting revolting after surgery. I'm going on 3 months post-op and I still have issues. While I hate it I realize it is actually in my favor as I am not craving foods any more - or when I do and actually get a taste and immediately turned off and stop eating. It's a mixed bag. -
We all wish you the best of luck! I view it as food and I are no longer lovers and had to divorce. We are now "just friends" and maintain a distant relationship. I now eat to live and not live to eat.

Eating mushies feels like swallowing glass - normal?
Rootman replied to DougNichols's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No it should not be painful, but each sleever has different reactions. Try going back to soft foods for another week and then try again. -
Great news! I know it feels so good, especially not to be cut in two by waistbands and tight shirts.

Does your metabolism slow down?
Rootman replied to weho's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes it can slow down as the body heals. The brain and various glands also does a remarkable job of slowing the metabolism and slowing other things like hair or even nail growth. It does this to divert energy to the healing of the parts injured by the surgery. You will feel tired and may decrease your activities because of the tiredness. It cannot do this indefinitely and will return to a level close to the original once it has run it's course and "accepted" the lowered calorie intake as normal. However the body cannot break the laws of physics. It requires energy to function and when the amount of fresh energy is reduced by the caloric limitations of dieting it is forced to draw from its stored resources in the fat cells it has so carefully packed away. -
Why Do I Have to Lose Weight Before Surgery?
Rootman replied to ScentsyLady's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's a two edged sword. Some insurance carriers HAVE and DO disqualify people for succeeding in a preliminary diet. They will of course deny this. I have personal knowledge of one person who was told on the sly by their nutritionist that because he was losing weight during the required diet he would be DENIED the surgery. He had to eat enough to NOT lose weight but he also had to be careful as to not GAIN too much either or they might of disqualified because of psychological food addiction reasons. Their reasoning is that they are trying to weed out people that do NOT need this very expensive surgery - and therefore save the company money AND avoid a risk to the patient. Like ANY policy there have been people needing the surgery that have been denied and people perhaps NOT REALLY needing it getting it. Unless you would consider the self pay route you will have to go along with them and try the prescribed diet. Should you eventually qualify you will more than likely be required to take part in a pre-op diet for a few days or weeks before surgery. This is especially necessary for morbidly obese patients that typically have a very fatty liver which can physically obstruct access to the stomach via the laproscopic procedure. I'll be honest here...I am not taking my vitamins
Rootman replied to Brian66's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Here's my $.02. Normal modern day eaters really don't need addional Vitamins unless they have a specific Vitamin deficiency due to improper diet, disease or heredity. The modern first world diet is chock full of more than enough in the fortified foods we all ate too much of. It is often said that modern people, especially Americans, have the most expensive urine in the world. It's full of vitamins that we DON'T adsorb and simply pass through. However people not eating much caloric intake - like sleevers - CAN rack up a vitamin deficiency quite easily just because of the lack of fortified food in the diet. The word of caution is this - it is VERY easy to rack up a vitamin deficiency and an illness because of the lack of vitamins - it is VERY HARD and VERY EXPENSIVE both in $$$ AND in the toll it can take on your body to CURE a disease that is due to a vitamin deficiency Once you have the symptoms of a disease caused by lack of vitamins you are WELL PAST the time when it can be easily reversed by vitamin supplements. Vitamins are cheap insurance to avoid such diseases. -
Why does it smell so ugh???
Rootman replied to Baglady's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's a pretty bad fart when the dog shakes it's head and leaves the room -
12/6/10 and have lost 81 pounds as of Feb 18 2011.

Every surgeon / nutritionist has their own schedule. I went 14 days before soft foods, 14 more before mushies and 14 more before whole foods.

Ummm insult or compliment
Rootman replied to thinoneday's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Don't over analyze it, as everyone else has said it's a compliment. Give yourself a pat on the back and go on working out. -
Yes it DOES get easier as the sleevers above point out. It seems that your surgeon is expecting too much too. As pointed out keep sipping. Eating gets easier, I was really turned off by EVERYTHING for a few weeks now I can tolerate some stuff. Experiment with various flavored waters, Crystal Light or sugar free Kool-aid may help. Pedialite is also good too as it has electrolytes in it ( "it's what the body craves" ). Sports drinks may help too, although watch the salt content. Stay OFF of cafeinated stuff as it may actually CAUSE dehydration.

How long for incisions to heal?
Rootman replied to PatrickG's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well about 6 weeks for "technically" healed, but the incisions will remain red and slightly raised for a year or better. -
Haven't even had surgery yet, and I'm not desiring food
Rootman replied to brandynd's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Nope. I craved all kinds of things and really suffered through my 10 day pre-op diet. When I was in San Diego awaiting my surgery there was a constant barrage of a pizza joints new 5 cheese pizza with bacon. I almost caved a few times and could of eaten a large all by my self. Thankfully I didn't. -
Well certainly they would frown on sex in the recovery room Ba-Da-Dum-TISH! Whenever you feel up too it. Be sure not to strain or take too much of your partners weight though.
