Can Massage Therapy Break Up Fat And Disperse.
Rootman replied to Ms skinniness's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sorry but NOPE, not a chance. It sure FELLS good though doesn't it? Any force great enough to "break up" fat is enough to physically break the bonds of the fat cells and carries a risk of a fat embolism - getting fat into the arteries and blocking blood flow - and no one can do that with a mere massage, doing so would hurt like bloody hell. Besides feeling good it can, as you mention, work the kinks out and keep you active - which burns the fat off. So stick with it, it certainly can't hurt. -
Weaning Off Anti-Depressants?
Rootman replied to DanityChai's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I too was on the Paxil and Xanax bandwagon, those years are a complete blur to me - and the time when I gained the most weight. Yeah I was easier to get along with but pretty much useless beyond that. I weened myself off over a period of several months. I alternated taking them every other day for a few weeks, then every 3 days then every 4 then once a week then off completely. It all took maybe 2 months and YES it IS HELL ON EARTH. I never thought I'd get "hooked" on any medications but I certainly was on these. I now take 5-HTP which is supposed to be a serotonin precursor. It takes the edge off and seems to make me mentally sharper - which is opposite of what Paxil did. I was dull witted on it. Whatever you do make sure your love ones know what's going on and check in with the doctor before starting. Be prepared as it may take a few tries to come off it. We all wish you the best. -
Yep, but this too shall pass. It was almost comical at first and I had to sleep on my right side (left side made it gurgle and blurp almost constantly). I don't remember exactly when it settled down but it did.

Gained 10 Lbs This Week
Rootman replied to 1Bumblebee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I will take a scientific tack on this, 10 pounds is equal ti like 35,000 calories. Do you honestly think that you at that many EXTRA calories beyond your base metabolic rate to gain 10 pounds? And that's if every calorie would be translated perfectly into fat, so it may be more like 40,000 calories with some going to waste. Something else is obviously going on here with Fluid and solid waste retention being at the head of the list. -
Do You Ever Feel Like Telling Fat People To Get Surgery?
Rootman replied to crosswind's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Funny this should come up. Yesterday the wife and I went to Branson Missouri to the Landing, a long outdoor strip mall. We parked at the end and walked to the end and back and I was in fine shape, not out of breath and not even tired. Wifey needed to visit the restroom so I parked on a bench and waited, enjoying the sunny aftyernoon. Along came a giant of a man, he was taller than I am but was heavier than I ever was, he had to be 400-500 pounds easily. It was hard to tell his age but he was probably my age. He was huffing and puffing and leaning on a cane. My first thought was “Thank god I don't have that problem any more”, my second was should I lean over and ask “Have you ever thought of weight loss surgery?”. I almost wished for a small pamphlet, something like a religious tract outlining WLS and providing URL's to sites like this. What do ya'll think of something like this? -

What 80 Pounds Does To Someone's Face!
Rootman replied to Forensikchic's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Cute pic, if you didn't tell us I'd say it was a pic of you and your mom! Sent from my Transformer TF101 using VST -
I at all possible see if they can bump you to first class on the way back - you'll really appreciate the extra room and be more comfortable. I got bumped for like $50 more and it was well worth it.
-
Yeah, that sounds like me post-op. I can't tell from your message wether you how far post op you are. I got cold and my lips actually turned blue too. This too seems to get a bit better with time.

Yes. Ignore the advice to NOT chew it, the issue is swallowing it, which can bother your new tiny stomach but I assume you're an adult and know enough to not swallow it anyway. right?
-
Yes, it's amazing how much longer your arms are when you and the spouse aren't both fat We can actually touch our wrists around the other now!

One has to wonder if her sleeve wasn't made larger back 4 years ago then it is now. I seem to remember that it took a lot of trial and error to come to the current size that works best fro most people. Having said that I am 1.3 years out and find that I too "struggle" from time to time with food and have not reached my goal weight - I'm still 30 pounds form it. But being 30 pounds overweight is a far cry from being 200 pounds over weight and I count it as a total success. And as I've stated before, NO WLS will work for you if you can't get your head straight. For most of us we have DECADES of food addiction to over come - and that's NOT simple by a long shot. All I can recommend is to see the doctor first of all, then seek psychological help to over come your food issues. Also, boost or START your exercise to burn off more calories. Find something you like (or can at least tolerate) and keep doing it. I found swimming works for me. We all wish you the best!

Yeah girl! And conversely there is nothing more embarrassing then getting your a$$ stuck in one of those type chairs and having to pry it off when you stand! It only gets better from here too!

Well the answer is YES and NO. YES it is important to drink enough Water as it replenishes what we lose through urination, sweat and solid waste. It also helps keep the kidneys flushed so that kidney stones have less of a chance to form. We are largely made up of water and during weight loss have a tendency to lose it rapidly so it is important to keep drink enough. HOW MUCH is the mater of debate. The old 6 glasses of water a day sage is basically just a myth that has been perpetuated for decades by simple repetition. You need to drink enough water where you are hydrated so that you can urinate regularly, that is several times a day and your urine is either clear or just slightly tinged yellow. If it's dark yellow or (YIKES!) BROWN or CAN'T urinate at all then you are getting seriously dehydrated and need more water NOW. So drink what you NEED based on above and perhaps a little more for good measure and don't sweat (pun intended) the rest

How Soon After Vg Did You Go Back To Work?
Rootman replied to Origical's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I went back 3 days after surgery to a desk job and it was waaay to soon. I could of done with 2 weeks off, easily 3. I felt generally crappy for 2 months. -
I'd advise waiting till after you get out of the recovery room to start. Beyond that maybe a week or two. Sent from my Transformer TF101 using VST

Well, IANAD but my guess is just a reaction to the surgery and the small stomach capacity and it's reaction to food or drink. Me thinks it just gets it's signals crossed and says "I'm too full, I need to get rid of some of this" and up it comes. Of those who I've read about over the ensuing year+ on the board most of them have claimed relief comes with time., the brain and stomach figure out what's going on and a tolerance builds to the narrow stomach confines. But that's just my guess.
-
Well I for one did not vomit for MONTHS after my surgery, and then I think it was due to a stomach bug I caught. It's a bummer to puke and I hate it, if there is an upside to having to ralph post-op it's the fact that since our stomach is so small you barf up a lot less. It's a quick half mouthful and I'm done, not the gut wrenching dry heaves of yesteryear. I know TMI! Since then I've over indulged a few times and the only relief was to puke it back up. Nasty, I know, but I ignored the FULL feeling and just HAD to eat that extra coupla bites. I paid for it too. I think the long term barfers are by far the minority and are more vocal than the non-barfers are. After all who's gonna post and say something like "Guess what, I didn't barf today!".

Class Of 2010 Where Are You? And How Ya Doing?
Rootman replied to sleeve 4 me's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sleeved 12/6/2010 down 170 pounds and look and feel great. Been exercising a lot by swimming 4-5 times a week. I too hover around the 200-205 mark seemingly never will get below 200. BMI is 27 so I'm technically not THAT over weight. Still a far cry better than 385 #s I was a year and a half ago. -
These are a VERY expensive alternative, the ones I've seen are 1 gram of Protein each which means you'd have to eat 20-30 of them to get 20-30 grams of protein. I'd recommend looking at the protein whey shots (drinks in a vial) they are way cheaper and although taste nasty can be downed in a few gulps.

I use the old farmer attitude tell'widdem! It's not HER business what YOU do and she is way out of line making these long winded remarks. I forgive (and forgave) people making quick remarks but to launch into a diatribe about it is unforgivable. Not saying you should but I've quit dealing with more than one business because of rude or incompetent help, including one neurologist who was himself an a$$ and apparently hired nothing but a$$es.

Can You Drink Milk Post-Op?
Rootman replied to NJsharon's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
To answer your question: YES, you CAN drink milk post-op as long as you could tolerate milk PRE-OP that is. There have been a very FEW that have complained about suddenly becoming lactose intolerant POST-OP. This also begs the question; Will you want to or need to? The answer is NO. You should try and avoid the calories and fat ( as Mouse Trap warns above) to enhance your caloric drop and speed your weight loss. That being said, just TRY one of the shakes with Water, they are nasty with milk and IMHO just plain intolerable with water. But you be the judge. -
I vote for the beach cruiser too, they are comfy with an upright seating position and high bars. Don't forget you're losing so don't buy simply based on todays weight.
