    Bread?

I echo what the others say. Short answer is YES you can have bread, long answer is YES - but be careful. Bread as pointed out is a filling cheap high carb food. And it's largely bread and carbs are what got us into this mess in the first place. I disagree with the TOTALLY NO BREAD "rule" and say "all things in moderation". I eat bread occasionally. If I eat a sandwich I typically eat ONE piece of bread and fold it over to make a half sandwich. I will eat two whole pieces for a toasted cheese sandwich, one piece for an egg-in-the-basket. Most time I skip all buns but a few weeks ago we stopped at a burger joint and they had pretty small Jr. size burgers with smallish bun, one burger each and an order of fries between us and I was full up.
  2. Yes, I whole heartedly agree. I went through EXACTLY the same surgery at the same place as your mom Be sure you know what you're getting in to. I had a LOT of reflux too and got an a PPI - Omiprozol which is generic Prilosec and it cleared up fine. I also ate a few crackers morning and afternoon to soak up excess acid. Mine cleared up totally and I now have no issues. It is not that uncommon for ANY sleever, the stomach is internally swollen for quite some time and makes the acid that the few proton pumps that are left overwhelm the small area. The swelling goes down and the room vs. acid ratio improves. This is one thing that people need to be aware of pre-surgery. Not only do you have no legal recourse if things go wrong you often are abandoned by your insurance without coverage for something that may or may not be directly related to your surgery. I've heard horror stories of people getting denied coverage for stuff like sinus issues or throat problems that happen to occur post op. The insurance company says the surgery caused it and it was NOT COVERED. It's a risk I took and have not had major issues. We all wish your mom the best and hope she gets things straightened around quickly.

Not Trying To Be Grose But...

I agree, this is NOT normal for ANYONE, sleeved or unsleeved. Someone vomiting in the night when you aren't even eating is just not normal. Something else is going on here, either she has something drastically wrong due to the sleeve, or, dare I say, causes this reaction herself somehow. I'm out over 1.5 years and have puked 3 or 4 times total, twice I think to getting a stomach bug and twice by eating too much too fast - my own dang fault.

    New Here

Welcome and we all wish you the best in your new adventure. While Sammy's terse negative comment has value please remember that for an OVERWHELMING majority of sleevers the surgery is VERY successful. Keeping that in mind do NOT approach it without concern, bad things CAN and DO occur, then again balance those possibilities with the risk of remaining morbidly obese for the rest of your life. Study it out, ask questions and seek out all the information THEN make up YOUR decision to do it or not. It worked for me.

    Intimidating

Yep, I can never get into the training machines or stationary cycles. For one thing I get BORED out of my mind. Funny thing is I can go to the pool and swim for an hour with nothing more to look at but the bottom of the pool and I'm just fine. I can ride my bike out doors for an hour too with no problem, put me in a gym and I'm bored to tears. I am lucky that our city has an adult wellness center with a pool as well as a nice hike / bike trail system.
  6. Stick with it! As said above it's worth it. On the same note this is why I went self pay in Mexico. I heard of 2 people who worked for my company years ago with insurance issues. One waited nearly a YEAR for surgery as they kept delaying and jerking him around between Drs. paperwork and insurance hoops. The other guy gave up after he lost weight on the supervised 6 month diet and then they pulled the plug and said he was then ineligible, last I heard (before he was laid off) he was fatter than ever and completely gave up on WLS. I'm not suggesting you do the same but self pay worked for me.

    Sensa

Totally worthless snake oil, there are hundreds if not thousands of complaints against the company. The stuff doesn't work and the keep billing you direct even though asked to stop.

    So Much Pain

Sorry to hear about your pain, NO this is not typical, but is indeed possible. Be sure to stick by what your doc says to do and give it some time. Each person is different, some breeze through the surgery with nary an issue, I was extremely nauseous but not in pain at all. We wish you well friend!
  10. Wowser! You're doing incredible! Keep up the good work.
  11. Just the opposite, went from mid 200's down to 133.

    The Easy Way Out

Easy way? I agree with the above post that the EASY way is to do NOTHING and allow obesity to slowly (or NOT so slowly) kill you. If it were as easy as "just exercise and eat right" then obesity would not be at epidemic proportions like it is today in most "first world" countries. The truth is YES, what is needed is controlled diet and exercise, but just like nearly every other aspect of we human beings we take eating to excess and pay the penalty for it. Being that there are far more overweight and obese people in the world then there are physically fit people, it is obvious the "diet and exercise alone" solution isn't working. As far as "easy way", my surgery cost me over $5000 cash, not far from what a good majority of people pay in co-pay and deductibles for insurance paid surgery. That's a helvalot of hours of work for me to pay. Not EASY by any stretch. I was miserable at first post-op, more so than I was pre-op and that misery is what prompted me to get sleeved in the first place, that too is a big, hard price to pay, there are times for the first few months I really regretted it, I felt real nasty. So tell the people to stick with your "the easy way out" theory, I'll stick with the facts that I COULD NOT DO IT ON MY OWN and need the afore mentioned "tool" to help me. It saved my life, literally and figuratively.

    Is Anyone Else Hungry?

Head hunger and possibly acid in the swollen reduced capacity stomach. First try a PPI like Nexium or Prilosec. Ask the doc.
  14. I to am a little squeamish about this, she does seem too young, but you have to look at the outcome and all the things she will miss, the ridicule about being fat, the growing up unable to do things that most normal children can do and all the life long issues associated with obesity.. As far as surgery goes it is pretty benign in that all that's being done is part of a non essential organ is being removed. We certainly wouldn't worry about an appendectomy would we? I don't think there is any right answer to this, it's up to the individual and their family and no blanket statement can cover all situations. It looks like the right decision for here.
  15. Welcome and best wishes in your upcoming surgeries! Just jump in with both feet and start contributing, we are family here.
  16. I'll be danged f I didn't fire it up again to take it to the dealer to replace the rear tire and the thing stalled and was DEAD! The year old battery just upped and died! Another $100 out the window! Just venting guys!
  17. I checked in to the forum and it looked weird. I tried it in IE 8 and it looked fine, Firefox shows the mobile version like what an Android or Ipad would see through a browser. Boy this is ugly. EDIT: GAH! I found out how to fix it, but why it shows this option in DESKTOP Firefox is beyond me. Down at the bottom of the mobile forum page was a CHANGE THEME button, I reselected VST and now it's back to normal - whew! How the heck did I change that anyway?
  18. Yep, been there done that THREE FREAKIN' times post-op. I now drink a ridiculous amount of Water to combat them, like 3 or 4 quarts a day. Strange the last and most severe case I had had no pain at all, I just urinated a LOT of blood, scared the hell out of me! I was on oxicodone for the pain and that barely cut it. The surgery thing is barbaric, most anyone I've consulted said that massage SOMETIMES works and they can also blast them with ultrasound too rather that cut on you.
  19. I think the hospital / clinic will provide whatever you need for your stay, you may need something for your days before or maybe after (although you aren't going to need MUCH besides at all besides water for the first few days), given that I would advise doing exactly OPPOSITE what Webchickadee suggests, measure out what you need for your trip, put the remainder in another container and then put your measured amount BACK INTO THE ORIGINAL CONTAINER and take it with you. I would then put it into CHECKED luggage. I doubt that they will let you through security with an opened container of a "mystery powder".

    Mexico Surgery

Loads, some because they had NO insurance, others like me because they HAVE insurance but did not want to wait. YES, there is some inherent danger going to MX, YES, there is little recourse to you should things go wrong and YES it generally is cheaper, quite often cheaper than the costs WITH insurance and it's co-pay and deductibles. Please do your homework and decide for yourself if it is worth the risk. It was for me.

    Insurance Hoop Or Self Pay?

Almanza at Jerusalem clinic Tijuana MX. I it was $5000 total plus airfare and 2 nights at a hotel, so close to $6000 total all things considered.
  23. I'm down 170 pounds and did not need it, now I guess I could use it but the small amount of sag that I have is very very minor. I have a little sag arounf my belly button and a small amount of "bat wing" on my arms. I go the the gym at the senior center and the amount of sag I have is not much more than the average over 50 man, so I don't think plastics are for me.

    Saying Goodbye

Yes, it's only a temporary departure, I can honestly say that I enjoy food far more NOW than I did pre-sleeve. I am not concentrating on stuffing myself silly and now eat slower and enjoy the tastes and textures MORE. I know eat whatever I WANT and not whatever I CRAVE, I just don't want a whole lot now!
