Find someone to be a partner with and ask them to hold you accountable for it. Barring that find something that you LIKE to do. I too hate the gym, went for a few months then got tired of the sheer boredom of it - that and the disrespectful people who refused to wipe down equipment when they left or hogged certain machines non stop - let alone the grunters, gawd how I hate the grunters. For me it was swimming, I've always loved to swim. Then I got back into biking, bought a new bike this last summer and now have about 1000 miles on it. If you just CANNOT find something you enjoy then realize that you will only be able to lose to a certain amount and won't get lower than that unless you diet and hold to it, and I'm afraid - as most of us know too well - dieting and laziness are at odds for most (formerly) obese people.

Has Anyone Cheated On The 10 Day Liquid Diet?
Rootman replied to ThurstT4life's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's already been answerd already but I'll chime in too, I started my liquid diet the day after Thanksgiving (in the USA) and simply HAD to have another piece of pumpkin pie so i ate one. No harm will come of it. Another benefit to the diet besides the liver shrinkage is keeping the colon from packing up with solids, post-op many people are constipated due to the surgical trauma and anesthesia reaction. It is NOT pleasant having to PUSH post-op so this is a real benefit. So try and limit the cheating and you'll be OK. -
Yeah it gets better, after a few months it's not as urgent althoug can be quite uncomfortable. Your capacity increases quite a bit at about 6 months then slides up again after about a year. Although you still get a super-full feeling with a LOT less food than pre-op. And it does bring instant releif if you CAN manage to barf - I did it a few times.

Skin Tiightening Procedures? What Non Surgical Works?
Rootman replied to mommy794's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
Umm, how do you tell if the wraps are actually working or if it's really the TIME that is working? ANSWER: You CAN'T. While I'm sure to feels good and eases your mind as it has already been mentioned this "skin tightening" stuff is basically a hoax. The body has a good mechanism to create more skin, as it stretches collagen bonds are broken and the body creates new skin in between the breaks, and when you lose weight that is what puckers up and creates stretch marks - the new skin filling in the broken bonds. There is no real bodily mechanism to consume the new excess skin and remove it other than starve yourself so much that the body eats up and available tissue that it can - we've all seen pictures of concentration camp survivors and people who are anorexic with their paper thin skin pulled tight across their bones and believe me you DON'T want to go THERE. It all depends on a few factors, age, genetic disposition and TIME. You can also exercise more which can fill out some fat with muscle but this has limited effect if the skin is stretched badly. It will shrink SOME and then stop and there is nothing that can really get it back to it's original size once it's been stretched too far. Barring all this the only real solution is surgical, removal of the skin that leaves visible scars that is VERY painful. -
We wish you the best friend! Stick with it, keep your goals REAL and don't expect it all to go away instantly and you'll be there.

For the first 6 months or so VERY easy to stick to the diet, when eating too much - and too much is like ONE teaspoon too much - you get sick and want to vomit. At 6 months things settle down and you still find it pretty easy to follow the diet, after a year it seems another bump in capacity is typical and then it becomes a tad more difficult to be good. BUT, and that's a BIG but, it is nowhere near as hard pre-op. I remember being famished ALL the time and constantly eating, now I just eat a little too much and I am full. At going on two years I have to watch what I eat still but I do exercise a lot more and have not gained much back, I just bounce up and down a few pounds a few times. Given the choice I'd rather be this way then the way I was pre-op. And as usual YMMV.

7 years ago we bought a used Honda Goldwing GL1800 and rode it quite a bit. Since my surgery we have hardly ridden at all, last year started out with torrential rain storms every weekend then turned off gawd awful hot for months on end. Not conducive to riding at all. I put it up in storage last fall after one or two short jaunts. This weekend was the first time I got it back out, aired up the tires and checked everything out and took a 3 hour ride. I was miserable. My a$$ hurts after about 30 minutes because I have so little padding there now. I've tried beaded seat cushions, memory foam, gel pads and sheep skins and it still just plain hurts. I feel so much smaller now too and I felt a tad overwhelmed. So we chatted at a rest stop and we both think it's time to sell the old girl (the bike not my wife ). Our interests have just changed so much post-op and time is more at a premium since I spend about 9 hours a week at the gym and riding my bicycle. It was fun while it lasted but with the insurance, personal property taxes, basic maintenance and the cost of gas it's costing me like $100 an outing. OUCH! We'll miss it but are moving on to other things. Just writing to tell you that not only does you BODY change sometimes your desires and hobbies do to.

Questions About Post-Op Flight Home
Rootman replied to AngelEyesInNJ's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Did you request wheelchair help? Nope, should have it was like from one end of the airport to the other and I was late. I had to RUN to get to my plane and - of course it was delayed making my rush completely unnecessary. Did you board before others? Yes, only because I too upgraded to first class, best $75 I ever spent, they treat you royal. Did you feel sick or get sick at all on the plane? No, generally felt like crap which I did for MONTHS prior to the WLS and MONTHS afterward too, my system was so screwed up from everything. The plane ride was fine, no effects from altitude or anything that I noticed, just traveling itself was a b***** in general. -

Antidepressants & Weight Gain
Rootman replied to Shape_Shifter's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would say the latter, I was on a SSRI and anti-anxiety drug and gained about 75 pounds, it certainly wasn't the pills doing it, it was all the food I was pushing in my pie hole. I guess I just didn't care. I would further support this as after I got off them (and a nasty withdrawal period too) I immediately WANTED to lose weight and determined I could not, so I decided on WLS. I doubt that I would have done anything about my weight had I remained on the pills. -

Anyone Had Dumping Syndrome?
Rootman replied to getnsknyntx's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Depends on what you call "dumping". From what I understand dumping is the stomach pushing food out into the small intestine when it's not properly treated with acid and begun to break down, the result is the small intestine spasming and objecting to the raw food, typically either accompanied by a severe nausea or diarrhea. It is MORE common in those getting RNY bypass surgeries as they no linger have a functioning pyloric valve in their functioning digestive tract. The typical reason for dumping is eating too much, too fast or eating too rich a food. Truth be told ANYONE regardless of WLS or not, and if you think back you probably have had it before too, you remember that meal that just made you sick right away and had diarrhea soon afterward? That was probably dumping. It is casued by the pyloric valve opening up before the food was ready to be passed to the small intestine. Perhaps it WAS eating to fast and a mechanical misfunction or somehow the valve got the wrong signal and opened too soon, or a food that sat wrong with you and made it open. IF you do experience it it seems to lessen after 6 months or so poast-op, in a year you may never have it again, then again get a case of stupids and eat too much too fast and you could most definatly have it many years post-op. -
Yes, I suppose you can but try and resist if at all possible, post-op it won't take any effort at all to not eat so anything you can do before hand will jump start the weight loss. The pre-op diet is just a precaution and as I stated a weight loss jump start. ANYONE can do a starvation diet for a few days knowing surgery is just around the corner. I know 2 guys who went out the night before their surgery and pigged out, nachos, chicken wings, tequila and anything else they thought they may miss post-op. They went ahead with surgery and it went OK, however they were sick as dogs and miserable. The combination of anesthesia, surgical trauma and being hung over made them really regret doing it. Having to take a massive dump 2 days post-op after getting dehydrated and constipated didn't feel good either. Pushing hard post-op just doesn't male for a pleasant day.

Too Much Saliva And It Makes Me Gag!
Rootman replied to Cuaya's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Going to hit 2 years out i less than 2 months and it still bugs me, although it's not as bad as it once was it's still there. For me it's a thick foamy spit accompanied by tiny little "beads" of something that I can roll around in my cheeks, almost like a tiny un-popable bubble. I'm not sure what causes it or what a cure may be. -
Well, the truth has already been mentioned, it's hard if not impossible to get rid of. The body has an excellent way of growing new skin as we fatten up and no real way to get rid of it once it's not needed. I had it pretty bad, lucked out in the belly for the most part but my inner and back thighs looked nasty. I've been seriously biking for a few months - about 100 miles a week - and while they are better they are still gross. Compression garments just cover it up. So exercise helps but nothing will really CURE it, except surgery, and I am loathe to do that.

Yeah I've run adblock stuff before but I also realize that sites like this have to have SOME sort of funding, we just can't TAKE and not GIVE something - even if it's simply being subjected to ads. As much as I don't like them I know the guys running this site are not getting rich and deserve whatever income they can derive on a free to sue site. I just wanted to vent and rant and hopefully the advertiser will realize they are alienating the very people they are hoping to contact with their nasty ads. They won't know unless they get feedback - and hopefully this will somehow come to their attention - at least without me clicking on the pic of that nasty belly.

In actuality I don't think that there is a whole lot of difference and the amount removed has more to do with the shape of the stomach rather than the size of the bougie. Also, if you get TOO big a sleeve then the old nemesis hunger will play a larger part in your diet than it would with a smaller one. You could always eat more often with a smaller sleeve but having to diet severely and put up with hunger may sabotage your weight loss. I also would not worry about eating. After a year, year and a half you can eat just about anything you want and it is quite easy for most to simply NOT eat as much and maintain the weight level. The LAST thing you want to do is lose a bunch and then gain a lot back, that would be discouraging and detrimental to your health. I'd go with what the doc recommends.

Breast Reduction After Vst Help
Rootman replied to tabbymonroe's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
As a guy I BEG you NOT to do it We would appreciate more pics too Really, I would wait at least a year to stabilize and make sure that they don't change any more. -
Like Buckeye said, like you we were healthy, then things go to hell in a handbasket in a hurry. Blood pressure, blood sugar issues and all the rest. Trouble is by the time they manifest they are harder to correct and may cause permanant damage.

Same here, how do those skinny ass people do it anyhow I fell off my bike TWICE and have really got it bad now. Time and pain relievers is what it's going to take. Padded bike shorts help on the bike, perhaps they'd help in your situation?

Sorry to hear it, it was a life changing decision for me - and quite literally SAVED my life. No one can guarantee that something won't go wrong but it's almost a sure bet that something WILL go wrong if you don't lose the excess weight. Talk it over with docs, loved ones, spiritual advisors, friends family - what have you. It's YOUR decision.
