Adequate volume and nutrition
brazcan replied to Labrys's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It seems you still have more than 40 pounds to go and you lost not too much in 9 months. Maybe you are feeling weak and need some Vitamins or more Proteins? Or maybe you (as we) miss being able to eat more? It does not seem like you are loosing too much. Sorry if my comment does not help... -
wife is not supportive at all (long)
brazcan replied to doggz109's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I went through the same with my husband. Including his perception that I was being selfish too and all the bargain to try again with diet and exercise. he even called family and frinds to ask them to talk me out of it and it caused a high level of discomfort in everyone as I had to shout out loud that I WAS GOING TO DO IT, NO POSTPONING, NO RETHINKING, AND NO MORE A PIP ABOUT IT. I went by myself and did it and I do not have a pint of regret. He is now much more supportive and happy about my decision. He helped a lot during recovery and is always attentive to see if I am drinking enough, etc. He sees the diference in my body and especially in my mood. I am sure your wife will be supportive and maybe consider it to herself after you do it. Go ahead. We all know that we cannot do it and maintain it with diet. The sleeve is not a magic tool but it will work with you so you can achieve a healthier life. Ask her to visit this forum, post about her fears and concerns and read about our many success histories. maybe this will help her to overcome her fears. -
Do Sleevers Smell Bad?
brazcan replied to crosswind's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had horrible gas before surgery and now it is gone. After surgery I only had gas once when I had prunes. never since then. I think I was intolerant to some food or it was the excess of carbs... now it is fine, maybe the healthier diet is helping. -
Cant get more than 400 cal per day. Suggestions?
brazcan posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am in the middle of a stall and trying to eat more but I do not seem to get more than 400 cal per day. I started eating eggs and blended meat. I feel full very fast and some times I even forget about eating. I set an alarm to remind me to eat every 3 hours but I feel so full I cannot get much in. My protein intake is in the 40g per day maximum. Any suggestion on how I can increase protein and calorie intake considering the fact that I cannot get more than 2 ounces of food at once? -

Are you taking potassium? If not, talk to your doctor about it. It helps a lot.

I also thought about the "aggression" on my body... but then I looked at my photos and saw a much more serious aggression... 75 pounds packed on in 10 years, sleep apnea, knee pain, back pain, bloating and gas, fatty liver, moving towards diabetes... I could not understand how I got so far, how I let that happen to me, how I did that to myself. Now I am happy and my body seems to be very accepting of the harm reduction approach I took. Knee pain is gone, sleep apnea is gone, fatty liver is gone, bloating is gone... I am positive I could not do it without my sleeve.

can't seem to eat without distress today......help!

That seem like a lot of food. The bread in particular can "grow" really big in your stomach. -
when does this get better?
brazcan replied to big2twig's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am sorry to hear you are having a hard time. I am concerned about you saying you may be depressed... I remmember my second day was horrible, I did not want to get up, open the drapes, turn on the TV, connect to anyone by an means... I just wanted to be left alone and to sleep until it ended. That was not good and I asked the doctor for some medication to help me with my emmotions as that was not letting me do what I had to do to get better. I am wondering if there is anyone there with you, helping you to get better. Are you alone? Are you getting the support you need? Please make an effort to drink pedialyte or gatorade, a little broth or juice, get up and get a warm shower, it helps too. If you feel that you really cannot do it, go to a hospital to get hydrated... dehydration is really serious and needs to be treated properly. Count on all of us but look for in person help too. take care -

I decided to open up about my VSG at work.
brazcan posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am 3 weeks post op and have been at work for a week (reduced hours). My team usually have lunch together and they have noticed that I am losing weight and eating very little and they had assumed it was some sort of crazy diet. I decided to tell about the surgery and how happy I was with the results. Most of them were curious, asking questions and being supportive. However one of them started being very negative, about the whole experience: Mexico, follow up, rate of weight loss, need for 1200 cal per day, that she would never hurt herself just to loose weight, etc. I tried to be nice but I was about to say that even with surgery I am still eating ore than she does and that we all know about her sick relationship with food and her pretending that she eats (Anorexic). Of course I would not say that out loud, just in my mind... I am still glad I open up about the surgery. It may help reduce stigma and maybe get to people who is feeling hopeless and do not know about this surgery and their options. I would hate to make people think that it was just diet and exercise and make them feel like a failure b/c they could not loose by the same means. -
Somedays I feel like that. My husband is impressed how I am able to cook my favorite foods for them... nut I enjoy it and it strenghtens me. As soon as you see the weight being melted away you will also realized that nothing tastes as good as that. I am 20lbs lighter, helthier, happier now. I am starting to like what I see in the mirror and this is so good. o now, when I see a chocolate cake I just tell myself that soon i will be able to eat again without the horrable feelings of guilt that I had before. I will give myself a (small) piece of chocolate cake on mother's day. Just hang in there. Things get better as the weeks go by.

Cant get more than 400 cal per day. Suggestions?
brazcan replied to brazcan's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you all for your suggestions. I am trying to eat more frequently (easier at night) and I added protein powder to my yogurt. I am alos having eggs and tolerating them well. Today I could have a small bottle of baby food (1230gm) without pain. It is getting better I think. Thanks -

brazcan replied to PatrickG's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 3 weeks post op too. Lost 18 pounds on the first 2 weeks but since then keep loosing and gaining 2 pounds. I am trying to eat more as now I cannot get more than 450 cal per day. I have tried hard but first i feel full really fasty and then I just forget about eating more regularly. I am hoping that it will improve after I start to have a more varied diet. Today i will try to have eggs. -
Why is my sister so non-supportive
brazcan replied to jerri's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had similar issues with my husband. We even had a major fight and he refused to provide any support. Now, 3 weeks later, he is so pleased and supportive. he sees the difference in my mood, face, body and keeps saying it was a good decision. He is always checking on how I am doing, if I am drinking enough water and so. It seems the idea of WLS is still hard for many people, particularly the ones who have never strugled with the frustrations of weight regain. Just do it. You know you want and need it. She will come to terms later. -
Walking is to speed up healing and release gas. We need to do it to get better. I had 2 C-sections and gall bladder removal but the VSG was much more uncomfortable. I felt as it everything was so tight inside me, it was not pain but a very hard to describe discomfort. Later I figured it was due to the drain. As soon as it was removed I felt a great relief. That think was longer than a meter I was shocked when they took it out and I could see how long the tube was. It clearly explained why I was feeling so "tight" and uncomfortable inside. But as I said, it was not pain but a strange discomfort.

Dr. Kelly told me that it was not supposed to stretch. He said that it happened when doctors were leaving part of the fundus but now they do it very smell and so not leave any fundus so it is not supposed to stretch, It is swollen in the beggining and it will hold more as the swelling goes away but it will not stretch. This is what I was told about mine.

B12 and B6 will probably help.

Stall. I know it will pass but I still hate it.
brazcan posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It is been 4 days without any loss and actually 1 pound gained. I am eating properly, increased my protein, drink a lot... I know it is the infamous 3rd week stall but it is still disapointing and frustrating. How do I get to break this stall faster? -

Here in Mexico with Dr. Kelly
brazcan replied to sadie_mo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am glad you are doing well. The pain in the first 2 days cannot be completely eliminated due to the gas pain (only goes away when you expel the gas) and the drain that makes things very tight inside and uncomfortable. These 2 cannot be managed with pain meds. As you start expeling gas most of the pain goes away. As soon as they remove the drain you feel a great relief and most of the internal discomfort goes away, you only feel your belly sore when you are getting up from bed or bending and so. I wish you a speedy recovery.
