New to lap band surgery
screeden replied to us_plus3's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Everyone is different. For me, i took pain meds for 3 days, and it was over the counter, cause i am allergic to everything else the recovery was much better than i thought it would be, better than when i had my gallbladder removed which only had 3 incisions. Just watch what you eat, be very diligent in foods you choose as you don't want to PB or vomit, it is not pleasant at all! i just had my first vomiting episode this weekend in public at a restaraunt and very embarressing. LOL! just chew, chew, chew you foods. stay away from white breads and follow your doctors advice and orders. You will have to adjust your eating habits, but i didin't find this all that hard as i didn't want to do this for nothing. Seen friends who abused their band or gastic bypass and they gained it all back! I for one, will not abuse my band. It is my Tool, not a quick fix. It helps me get to where i need to be. It is one leg of a 3 legged stool, diet and exercise are the other two. It will not work if you don't do the other two. You will be fine! -

It is normal. you will fluctuate all the time. just keep at it, your body is adjusting to everything right now. -
I only threw up a few times that night and it was not violent. just the water coming out of my nose was the horrific part. i stayed on liquids most of yesterday, had some tomato soup last night with no problems. eating runny oatmeal this morning and i feel fine. i now know what to do and not do but i will be telling my doctor at my next fill appt next week. they always ask when you go in for a fill.
-
you will be fine. you are just ready for a fill. i too was ready and was eating somewhat normal and yes it did scare me, but i knew that my fill would be coming soon i was fine. i had mine done almost 3 and 1/2 months ago and have lost 31 pounds. just try not to over do it on eating. when you get your fill, you will be on liquids again for a day or two then mushies, then solids.

Eating too little?
screeden replied to BandedApril's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
make sure you get your proteins in first, then veggies and fruits after. i eat about a cup to a cup and a half with each meal, eat 3 times a day. i stay full for 5 to 6 hours at a time with that. i am not hungry in the mornings, so i usually have a protein shake to get some of it in. you can buy the powder stuff and add milk, that will give you at least 20 grams of protein. it is very important for muscles and to prevent hair loss. congrats on the weight loss. don't loose too fast though. my doctor likes 1 to 2 lbs per week. he calls that the sweet spot. -
For those past the 2 week post-op liquid diet

I still drink them as I am not hungry in the mornings, but know I need something. I just use slim fast. -
GEtting Banded on 8-16 and Nervous
screeden replied to medic552's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was surprised at how little the pain was for me. My gallbladder removal was more painful. I was up the next day walking around with my lap band. The gas pain in the shoulder is painful. Use a heating pad on the shoulders, get chewable gas pills and rest. It will get better. You are on you way to the new you! One day at a time. -
Here's to the 1st step to your new life! way to go! congrats

8 days pre-op and I am about to have a MELTDOWN
screeden commented on africanqueen's blog entry in africanqueen's Blog
I completely understand. i thought i was going to lose my mind. i did cheat one day as our whole neighborhood was having this huge cookout pre-easter and i was not going to sit there and watch everyone else eat. so yes i ate and ate. lol! and i was fine after that. got right back on board the next day and made it the rest of the week until my surgery day. don't feel bad if you cheat once, i am sure i was not the only one who cheated during the "fast". -
Anyone else not required to do a liquid diet?
screeden replied to Flammingjun's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine does not require a liquid diet before. but does have his patients do a 2 week "fast". which consists of a slim fast in the morning, slim fast for lunch and a lean cuisine or smart one for dinner. you can have snacks in between meals, such as fruit, yogurt and pudding. I lost 6 lbs doing mine! it is to have your liver shrink some for the surgery, better access to the organs. -
Today someone noticed I lost weight!!!
screeden replied to jen120's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yeah! That is the best feeling in the world. I have had alot of people at work notice i have lost weight, had to get new scrubs as mine were so baggy and falling down. LOL! congrats on your weight loss! -
Oh, thank you. I am so glad that i am not the only one here. LOL! i was so embarressed. Our server came in to check on me, i am thinking i was a little loud in my vomiting. It was scary as the water poured out of my nose, i could not catch my breath. I felt bad pushing those people out of the way, but at least i did not puke on them. Anyways, i have been on liquids and mushies today and feel okay. i do feel a little swollen, but also started today too. Won't do that again, that was awful!

My nurse told me to drink just liquids the two days before I start as I start bloating then, and so far it has helped. I get tight those days right before my period.
-
it has taken me a while to get used to eating slowly, used to scarfing my food down and feeling sick after. i don't want to vomit with this so i keep that in my mind the whole time i am eating. write a note and put it on the microwave if you have to.
-
just call your doctor. better to be safe than sorry.
-
it will eventually go away. everyone is different. try a heating pad on your shoulders, that helped me. and i ate the mylanta chewables like every 4 hours. no drinking through a straw, makes the gas worse.

port wounds and other lovely matters...
screeden replied to southernrootslbc's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
call the doctor about them just to be safe. mine were all itchy and i bruised alot. there was a little redness around them, but not horrible. if there is some oozing at the sites, then you need to call them. don't be doing too much exercising too soon. my doctor told me not vigorious exercise for 2 weeks, but walking is fine. i cleaned mine with soap and Water and patted them dry. -
Okay, i am 36 and have been thinking of getting banded for awhile now but am scared to death to do it. any advice would be great. i have about 100 lbs to lose.
-
oh and congrats on the fantastic weight loss
-
thank you for your reply. congrats on the weight loss. a friend of mine has lost almost 100 lbs and looks great. i used to be skinny, having 2 kids back to back just can't get the weight off and my youngest is almost 4 now. LOL keep the advice coming please. thank you.

thank you for your response. i am going to schedule a seminar to get the info and meet the surgeon. i have heard wonderful things about him and a friend of mine did it and has had great success. just a nervous person about having any kind of surgery. i was like this with my gallbladder even though i knew it had to come out, i was nervous as hell. but felt 100% better after it was done.
