What does 'full' feel like?
snowfie9 replied to Jax's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am learning that it can be challenging to know when I'm full when I'm not eating slow enough. If I eat quickly, I'll find myself eating too much before I realize I"m full. Don't know if that'll help you but it's just an observation I've made recently. -

I don't know how I'm doing (input welcome).

I was sleeved on May 9, about 6 weeks ago. I have lost 30lbs in those 6 weeks and have not (yet) experienced a stall. But I feel like I'm not doing as well as I should be. I am one of those people who had very little swelling from the get-go and I've been able to eat far more than I feel I should be able to. Maybe the doctor cut me a bigger pouch because I'm so tall and big-framed, I don't know. I feel restriction but I am able to eat (for example) an entire slice of pizza in a sitting. instead of a 1/4c pouch, I feel full at 3/4 to 1 cup. And all the problems I had before surgery are still there. I'm still struggling to stay on high protein/low carb/low fat. I'm still struggling wtih that mindset that becuase it's there, and because my stomach will let me, I can eat it. I can't eat nearly what I used to, but at the same time I still eat stuff I shouldn't. I need to do better. whatever weightloss I have enjoyed so far will eventually diminish and halt if I keep this up. But at the same time, am I doing okay as far as the number of pounds in 6 weeks? -

I wish I weren't either. LOL! And I had no expectation I would even be able to. But things literally went better than I could have possibly hoped. I'm healing like some kind of regenerating mutant! The only problem I have is 2 of my incision scars still itch. the other three are just smooth, pink outlines. Although I wouldn't have thought of pizza as a slider food. I keep thinking things like soft breads and mashed potatoes and "mushies" are. Pizza is pretty substantial. Maybe I need to redefine that. As for steak, I just had my first beef yesterday and I ate quite a bit (a 4oz burger patty). I can eat an entire brat (turkey or pork) in one sitting. No bun of course. I"m thinking of getting back to basics and doing 3-5 days on the Protein shakes and working back up from there. Jump start things a little. I've recently discovered I can take a pepcid in the morning to reduce those tummy rumblings that seem like hunger. I just have to find a way not to succumb to stress eating while I"m at work. I swear to God I've worked here for almost 4 years and I've never seen people bring in so many Snacks as I have since I got surgery. Doughnuts, Cookies, pizza, chocolate chip banana bread. All this stuff people are bringing to share with everyone. Someone brought in a full pan of some kind of delcious looking Pasta last week and it took everything I had not to dive into it. The journey continues. Thanks for the advice. -
They REALLY don't want people adjusting their own CPAPS. but it can take a month or more just to get into a sleep study, and then another 2-4 weeks for the evaluation to come back and tell you wha tit should be. And by then you'll have lost even MORE weight and it'll STILL be wrong. Long ago I did a google search on the make/model of my cpap and found a comment on a forum that shows the magical key-combination to change my pressure. I never set it above a certain pressure, but I set it lower if I know it needs to be lower. (and I can tell). Up to you. but there are options.

I second pure protein bars. low sugar but high protein. I like the Peanut Butter and chocolate ones. -
Hardest habits to break/adopt
snowfie9 replied to Douceur72's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
for me the hardest habit to break is not to eat something JUST because it's there. I'm finding I can eat more than I probably should be able to (though not nearly as uch as I used to be able to). So if someone brings in doughnuts or Cookies, I have no problem eating them. That's been my problem this week. I'm still losing, but I won't be for long if this keeps up. Today I'm knuckling down and coming back to basics with Protein, protein, protein. -
My Nut has this mantra "No calorie containing beverages" (including milk and protein shakes) and it was hammered in during our class. But that's only AFTER you get to solid foods. both were encouraged in the beginning liquid phases.

I've recently discovered that Greek yogurt is a good substitute for cream cheese but I hadn't thought about mayo. I make great deviled eggs and I know at least my husband would love me to make more. Hmmm. Eggs are on sale this week.

I'm at my surgeon's office and just got my drain taken out (literally 5 min ago). I am SO happy to be rid of that thing! I realized the other day that I have to go back to work on Sunday. I feel fine but it's amazing how time flies.

Day 9- things are looking up
snowfie9 replied to meggiep's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had canned turkey chili liquified in the blender with Greek yogurt mixed in and it was HEAVEN! The Greek yogurt tastes just like cream cheese and chili and cream cheese is my favorite dip. -
Red Velvets- May Sleevers- How is today?
snowfie9 replied to meggiep's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
One week down and I'm still doing well. The glue on my incisions is starting to peel off and that had me a little concerned until I realized what it was. I am so done with this drain! I can't wait to be rid of it! I haven't had an umbilical cord since I was a fetus and I really haven't missed it! Thursday, that's the follow up appointment. I hope the surgeon takes it out then. I'd hate to go back to work with this darned thing. And I'm really looking forward to pureed turkey chilli for some reason. ONWARD! -
Pork rinds... Good or bad snack????
snowfie9 replied to Sunny123's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
huh. I never thought of that. I wonder what they're like in meatloaf. I can't wait to try! -
Pushing my luck...
snowfie9 replied to Husky2Healthy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't think any of us would be resorting to surgery if we had a very good history of following what we KNOW to be a good and healthy diet. The key is not to beat anyone down for their mistakes but encourage them to do better. Shame and guilt and self loathing most often causes our issues with food and should not be encouraged by others. I know you didn't mean to be rude, but if you'd thought about it for a moment before you posted you'd probably realize the same thing. -
How long post op are you? I'm 1 week out and the only lower back pain I've had was because I've had to sleep exclusively on my back.
-
Well first off make sure you're taking an iron supplement, you could be anemic. If you're drinking too MUCH fluid, your low blood pressure could be a sign that your electrolytes are low. I was on a supervised diet plan that did that to me because I was drinking at least a dozen glasses of water a day with very little salt. I had to take "shots" of morton's light salt dissolved in warm water to balance that out and it was nasty.
-
I'm doing great, maybe a little TOO good. Never had a problem getting fluids down. I can gulp as much as I ever did (but have to burp after). Pain has gone down. I can sleep on my side again. Drain is in until Thursday which is annoying but I'm dealing with it. The Protein shakes tasted really weird for the first few days but whatever caused that appears to have worked it's way out of my system and I can get them down fine now. I'm taking all my Vitamins. The Iron gives me rust flavored burps. Ewww. I've already broken my pledge not to weigh myself for the first two months. I'm down 5 lbs from surgery and I don't know how I feel about that but I've put the scale back in the closet. I can start pureed on Wednesday and OMG I can't wait! I have never been so excited at the prospect of pureed turkey chilli before. Hope everyone is well and rocking their sleeve.

I know how you feel. I was sleeved 7 days ago and it's been going so much better than I thought it could. I've had no restriction on fluids since day 1 and pain has lessened to the point that I barely feel like I had surgery at all (except I sill have a drain sticking out of me). I feel a little TOO good and decided to test the waters with some instant mashed potatoes. I had 3 oz and it tasted so good and didn't feel at all bad. But I realize I'm doing what I always do with a diet, I'm negotiating failure. So I'll stop. (sigh) I never thought I'd get to the point where I'd be looking forward to pureed turkey chilli like it was a freaking trip ti Disneyland! Soon...very soon. -
I just got back from the hospital and it was fantastic! The hospital was fantastic (sky ridge medical center in lone tree, CO) the doctors were fantastic the nurses were FANTASTIC! I'm having no problems getting liquids down and there isn't much pain. I feel like I've gotten through the easy part and it'll get harder before it gets better. But for now, I'm feeling alright! Where's the rest of the 5/9 sleevers? How you doin?
-
I just got sleeved by dr chae on 5/9 and it was excellent. He really knows what he's doing, and as a bonus, no 2 week pre-op diet. And sky ridge is a fantastic hospital to get sleeved in. Nice rooms, friendly, knowledgable nursing staff, it was like being in a hotel! The one thing I will say about dr chae is that it can be difficult to get around his office staff. If your cousin is not self pay, make sure she snags christine's business card on her first a ppt because Christine is the insurance lady and about the only one with an email address on her card.

Call the dr. First. It may not be exactly the same or there may be stronger doses available via prescription.

Before surgery, they gave me a little patch to wear behind my ear for nausea. It was supposed to last for 3 days but I took it off on the second day. I don't know the exact name of the medication but it was what they prescribe for motion sickness. It gives you a horrible dry mouth but that just motivates you to drink more. You might want to check and see if something like that is available to you for nausea. I was told to make sure when I take it off to wash my hands after as the medication will dialate your eyes for 24 hours if you accidently rub your face with it on your fingers.

Help!!! I'm 5 days post op and downing 12 oz of liquid in 20 minutes
snowfie9 replied to forever35's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 2 days post op and I think I drank 2 liters of Water yesterday (along with 2 lites of IV Fluid. I was in the restroom every hour or two!). It's not a sign of anything wrong, but a sign of something very right. Usually it's post op swelling that causes sleevers to not be able to take down water or clear fluids. You don't have that swelling or you got over it very quickly, and that's a good thing. It doesn't mean you're going to be eating a lot once you start actulaly EATING. get all your Vitamins in (especailly B vits) and you'll be fine.
