Surgery in two days 3/21/11 and so scared:(
mahealanij replied to loveynurse01's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am prone to anxiety attacks and was sooooooo scared of the anesthesia... All I could think was, OMG what if I have an anxiety attack because I can feel the drugs!?!? (which happens when I have to take pain meds or allergy mess that make ms sleepy. I told the anesthesiologist my concern and he kind of just chuckled and promised me I wouldn't have time to have an anxiety attack. He was right. We were having a talk about my upcoming trip to Vegas and he asked me what hotel I was staying in and I said Luxor... And then i remember I said wow... I'm really sleepy. Period. That was it. I woke up in recovery an hour later high as a kite. Lol... You will be fine... -
3.5 weeks post op.. NO fill yet and hungry.. Question.
mahealanij posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hello everyone... I had my surgery on 2/11. I can tell my swelling has gone down from surgery this week because i am actually beginning to feel hungry. I have managed to eat three meals a day and each meal has been 4 oz each. (I am in the soft foods level of my progression back to regular foods). Until two days ago, i ate nothing but Proteins. (Fish, crabmeat, shirmp... chicken/turkey breasts). I started adding one ounce of veggies (greens, green Beans etc) to my meal and cutting out one ounce of Protein. And since i have done that i find myself hungry in less amount of time. I don't have restriction and my swelling has gone down a great deal so i am not surprised. I get my first fill on March 15th *which i am nervous about* but looking forward to. Also, i am no longer satisfied with the four ounces.... i stop eating but still... i find myself hungry. Is it okay to eat some green beans or greens in between the meals? cucumbers? and if so how much should i limit myself to. and this is real hunger... like my stomach is growling and everything so i know its true hunger.. and i don't want to starve myself... or should i just be hungry? i dont know... helppppppppppppppppppppppp!!!! lol thank you for reading. -

Sleep Help....
mahealanij replied to ChevyBlazenQT's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I understand... i am a side/stomach sleeper... i usually lay on my side slightly over onto my tummy with my knee bent. Post surgery while i was still on pain meds... i just fell asleep however but as i got better i used a fluffy pillow and pushed it into my stomach and rolled over onto it slightly and slowly. it helped me to sleep on my side better.. i can NOT sleep on my back... good luck! -

Honey.. it will go so fast... there is so much to do with all the testing and everything.... take this time to really learn what they will teach in the nutrition classes... what you will learn from the doctor and nurses... especially others who have had this procedure before you.. There is still so much i wish i had the chance to learn and hear about before having my surgery... good luck -
Single incision lapband, anyone have this procedure?
mahealanij posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello... Has anyone else had the single incision (through the navel) procedure? And if so have you had any complications or found that the incision site takes longer to heal? Or suffered any nerve damage? I was banded 2/11 and am still having pain in my abdomen. And yes... Ive been to see my surgeon and no signs of infection have been found. -
Single incision lapband, anyone have this procedure?
mahealanij replied to mahealanij's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm sorry to hear that Burd1tt.... that sounds horrible.. I didnt have any problems with my incision site. My doctor put a layer of this blue looking glue in my navel that covered my incision site.. it took like two and a half weeks for that blue stuff to start coming off.. and he said that was like a band aid that kept bacteria from growing because our navels are dark and tend to be the best place. I could shower and everything normally... i actually liked having that blue goo on my belly button. They put me on Cipro when they weren't sure if i had an infection when they were waiting for all the results of my tests to come back... then they found out i had nerve damage and i took myself off of it. My body does NOT do well with antibiotics and i avoid them as much as i can... but it sounds like your incision site is actually infected... my incision on the left had an air bubble and my surgeon said that the body would reabsorb the air so i would just have to be patient... and it is going down slowly.. but it is bothersome.. i cant wear my jeans yet because when i sit it squeezes the lower half of me into the top half.. and OWE. Even though my pants fit me much better this is still uncomfortable. SO this is just going to have to take time to heal.... if you did have an infection it can take much more time because your body has to clear up the infection before it can begin to heal the incision. I sure hope you feel better sooner than later because i know how miserable it can be.... As for my nerve damage.. I AM FEELING SO MUCH BETTER!!! It has taken a lot longer than all these post-surgery posts i see here but im so happy the damage isnt permanant. I am at about 80 percent now!!! I decided not to rush back to work, my job requires me to be alert and sitting for almost 8 hours straight and is very stressful (police dispatcher here in BALTIMORE)... so i decided to take my time and heal... its still hard for me to sit straight up eight hours without discomfort and pain.. so im not rushing.. i have the sick leave... and I'm taking it... thank you everybody for helping me get through that rough patch.. whew! -
Nope... I didn't have one. I was told most short surgical procedures don't require one. When you get your iv they will turn it up to a fast drip.. And I can guarantee that before you go into surgery you will have to pee... Your bladder will be empty when they put you under and you will be up before you know it.

Got to the hospital at 9am.. Was scheduled for surgery at 11 am... Went through the recovery process and was discharged by 530pm... -
Hello my fellow bandsters... I was banded on 2/11/11. I almost got through the surgery experience without a hitch but 6 days post-op i woke up in excruciating pain. After about 20 different tests my pain was ruled nerve damage. It has been a hard road since. However, a few days ago i stopped getting worse and have now began to feel better as each day passes. So with this being said.... Is it normal to NOT feel hungry? I can go all day without eating if i werent so concerned with getting some Protein in. For the last few days i have really been paying attention to the signals my body has been giving me... And i noticed at the times when my body would make my stomach growl, i now get super nauseus. And for quite some days i would take anti-nausea medicine and lay down. So when i noticed this pattern, i forced myself to eat a bit of something. And guess what? I wasnt nauseus anymore. Weird. So has anyone else had their hunger pains/tummy growls turned to nausea? Thats the only sign my body gives me to let me know i should eat... And its not a very good one.. Who wants to eats when they are feeling sick to their stomach? Thanks for your time.

Single incision lapband, anyone have this procedure?
mahealanij replied to mahealanij's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Dr Peter Liao, with GBMC bariatric center. Awesome surgeon and i wouldnt have traded him for the world! But the pain used to be severe and sharp.. It started abt 6 days after surgery (when i started feeling better from the whole surgery in general). I ended up in the er due to the pain (pain was abt two inches up and two inches to the left of my navel) so everytime i inhaled my diaphragm hurt as well so i experienced shortness of breath. I had blood tests, x-rays... Cat scan with contrast and everything came back normal. So they ruled it nerve damage. From what i understand it often occurs with any surgery. A couple of days ago i finally started feeling a bit better as the days passed. I just feel kind of down because most of the surgery stories on here are so positive... In about a 4-8 days people are already back to work. Its been over two weeks and i still havent gone outside. Although tomorrow i may try because i can tolerate sitting upright alot better now. It is a relief to know that some of you had longer healing times... I believe my incision on one side may be healing slower... Most of the skin in my navel is smooth and soft but the left side is a bit harder and still a bit painful... Maybe it will just take more time for that to heal up as well... Thank you all for the feedback... I appreciate it. -
Newbie finding out I am insulin resistant
mahealanij replied to DetroitJenny9701's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I found out i was insulin resistant when i started the process too. However it wasnt that bad where i needed medication but instead i have to watch what i eat. However my dr thought it was even more of a reason to go through with the lapband surgery. I got banded on 2/11/11 and have never experienced a spike or a high blood sugar episode since. Good luck!! -
I understand. Ten days post-op my girlfriend plops her butt in the bed with ot and fresh chili's chipotle bar-b-que chicken strips and hot avacado & spinach dip with chips!!! Im not gonna lie... I considered homicide.. Lol j/k

Becareful of the sugar... My dr said no shakes over 5 grams of sugar per serving

You and i got banded on the same day.. In total pre-op and post op i have lost abt 20 lbs. I alsobam following the diet plan. Im thinking we are where we should be.
-
Yep... Right down the road. Day by day im finally getting better... I am about 80 percent now so its looking like the damage isnt going to be permanant. As of now, i havent started a blog for my lapband experience due to the fact that i still cant sit up comfortably to type but i do plan on it. Hopefully sooner than later. The nerve damage was a pretty horrible side effect from the surgery but as of now, its been my only negative experience (besides the normal gas and bloating post op). I am never hungry. I was on fluids the day before and three days post op and then graduated to full fluids.. Currently im eating puree's but cant stand mushy stuff so its been soft crab cakes and steamed tilapia for the past few days. But i never get hungry. I have to sit myself down and eat... Sometimes i forget to eat until the afternoon and i get nauseaus... So my new hunger pain is nausea. Maybe thats why i never feel hungry. Lol The shake i love the most and (actually my girlfriend has started to drink it for the Vitamins and protein) is the eas strawberry edgevantage (or some spelling like that).. I was so nervous when i took my first bite of real food.... I was scared i was going to eat to much... Or somehow shift my band... Was not as plesant of an experience as i thought it would be. Make sure to get a good food scale, it will save you some anxiety. Dont know if you found decent Calcium supplements but unjury.com has some that are pretry good for chewables... Hope all is well!!!!

Struggling with my (self-affirming) principles.
mahealanij replied to AlgernonAnon's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Actually yes, Yes i did. I have been chubby basically my whole adult life. For the most part i accepted it. Due to some heavy health problems i had to face the facts... i was not healthy and my life would be cut short if i didn't make some major changes. I tried dieting my whole life and made some friends along the way that faced the same problems . Over the years we had one thing in common, our weight struggles. and what happens to that bond when the weight loss starts to happen? SO how do you tell those friends/coworkers that you are taking this drastic step? especially when for the longest time I seemed so secure with my self-image? I almost felt like a hypocrite. and what will i think of myself? how will i view myself? and how will the people around me start to see me? all the unknown factors. and only time will tell.. but yes... i can definitely relate. -

Hello!!!! I am in baltimore maryland i was banded on 2/11 and i am also a lesbian. How are you adjusting and healing from the band procedure? I found this site while browsing for questions about my surgery... i have had a complication (nerve damage) and have been house-bound for the past two weeks! SO over it! I am finally starting to heal so my journey has started a little rough.

hello... I am post op 7 days today. I had only one incision (through my navel).... I started feeling pretty good and then on day five i started getting these painful burning sensations above my navel and slightly to the left about two to three inches up... its horrible.... i cant walk without pain, i cant sit up without a great deal of maneuvering and pain. I went to the er because it seemed unnatural for this to start after i started feeling better. I had the whole work up... cat scan with contrast and everything... my white blood cell count was up but not unusually high for someone whom is newly post op... i went back eight hours later and it was almost at a normal level just slightly elevated... so physically they cant find anything wrong. Only suggestion by my dr is nerve damage... iim playing the waiting game for the next few days.... i hope you are feeling much better
