  1. Thought you all would enjoy this, and it's actually good advice. Don't eat before getting your teeth cleaned. Seriously. I know most people don't eat anyway because we don't want stinky breath before the appointment, however my appointment was at 9am - after being awake for three hours, getting ready for work, getting the kiddo ready for preschool, etc. I grabbed some turkey slices and a slice of cheese for a good, quick Protein Breakfast. I ate it about 15mins before my appointment. Bad idea. As the dentist chair was going down with my head slightly below horizonal I thought, "Oh sh*t, my breakfast is still in my pouch and not in my stomach. With nothing stopping it from coming back up, omg, calm down, this is not going to be good *weird hiccup burp*." I had to stop the cleaning a few times, apologizing profusely (my hygenist knows about the band). Gravity was not my friend. Since the food was sliding back up (or down given the position I was in), my esophagus kept making more mucus thinking I was stuck. Awesome. The hygenist even said, wow, a little soupy in your mouth referring to the extra saliva from the incident - totally laughed at that. I finally stopped the cleaning, stood up, did a big no no and jumped up and down hoping gravity would make it all get past the stoma and into my stomach which worked. Of course, you have to imagine the most polite way to jump was to cross my arms over my chest to hold my boobs in place so it wouldn't totally be obscene or so I wouldn't hurt the tatas. Total comedy. So my advice, eat way earlier than you dental cleaning to avoid looking like a schmuck jumping up and down in a dental office.

    Liquid Pain Medication

Lortab... it's liquid hydrocodone and tylenol. It's fabulous but tastes like crap.
  6. Very normal. It's from the stress of surgery and could be a sign of not getting enough protein. Try to get at least 80gms of protein a day. I had the same thing happened and supplemented by diet with a protein shake or protein bar a day and added a biotin supplement in the morning. No more hair problems.

I Never Cheat And I Cheated Today :-/

Don't beat yourself up too much. Half the battle is recognizing what was ingested and what must be done to compensate for that. Wake up tomorrow and start the new day without the guilt. Good luck!
  8. I have no idea, but if anyone attends a local support group, I'd get the word out.
  9. I really suggest those that have proof of this going on, please contact your state's attorney general office. This is insurance fraud being conducted by the physician's office and is no better than Medicare/Medicaid fraud that is running rampant and unchecked.

    Intro

Hi all! I'm Carrie and I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2001. I managed, as best as I could, with Metformin, Spironolactone, BCP and laser hair removal. In 2004 I started fertility treatments with 4 rounds of Clomid, Fermara and IUIs. In 2009 I started fertility shots with IUIs and after two cycles got pregnant. I now have a 2 1/2 year old daughter. In Feb 2011 I had the Lap Band surgery after I found myself 10lb heavier post baby, and I was already high to begin with. I've had my band for 1 year and are down 63 lbs. My biggest advice to everyone with PCOS and the band... we will lose the weight slower than others. Don't get discouraged! Keep on with higher Protein eating and exercise.
  11. Hi all, I was banded yesterday, and during the surgery my physician also repaired a hiatal hernia. Has anyone else had this done too? I'm experiencing more pain my diaphragm, which I think has more to do with the hernia repair than the actual banding. It sucks. I can't sneeze or cough without screaming out in pain, which is tough since I have horrible allergies and sneeze a lot. Also, for some reason, my ab muscles are twitching. It's so weird. What kind of pain did you all have right after surgery and how long did it last? For me it's mostly the skin incisions being held by dermabond and my diaphragm.

    Any Good Fish Recipes

I made this recipe up for salmon and love it. Salt and pepper salmon Place in pan skin side down w/ some olive oil Pam. Cook for 3 mins. Flip and cook for another 3 mins Sauce is a greek yogurt dill sauce on top. It's easy: fat free greek yogurt, fresh dill, salt, pepper, onion powder. During the summer i put the salmon skin side down on tin foil, place the sauce on top, wrap the foil up and place it on the grill for about 7-10 mins. The sauce flavors it so nicely. For mahi mahi or tilapia, I use this seasoning: http://www.spiceandtea.com/florida-sunshine-p-194.html Florida Sunshine. It's amazing. I've made a mango, pineapple salsa with these light white fishes that is yummy too.
  13. If you want some creamy cheese, try goat cheese or the laughing cow cheeses with mashed cauliflower or potatoes. It will give you that cheesy taste you're looking for.
  14. First of all, you rock for asking the question. I second what everyone else said. My husband was amazing since we had a 2 year old at the time, and I couldn't pick her up for 2 weeks. The best thing you can do is be an ear for her whenever she needs to vent, freak out, cry or just talk. This is a big life change for her and sometimes it takes just someone you love to listen. I don't know you, but I agree with someone who said don't be a food police, so I'm not assuming you would be like this. She may feel self conscious if she wants a cookie. A cookie is a cookie. It's when we eat 10 that it's a problem. Enjoy the one or two treats now and again with her. Find other ways to Celebrate that doesn't involve food. Birthday or Anniversary chocolates can now be a gift certificate for a massage Here are some things to know that she may not readily admit: 1. Being on the pre and post liquid diet can cause diarrhea. Liquid in - liquid out. Be sure she has enough G2 (low sugar) Gatorade in the house. 2. After she starts solids, her food intake may be so little that there is little waste, which can lead to constipation. If it's not one, it's the other hehe. Make sure you have some Colace in the house just in case. 3. Get her some Thermacare heating pads or a regular heating pad. The surgery gas pain comes as pain in the left shoulder. 4. Make sure she has a good, small blender or a bullet blender. I got a small Cuisinart. It comes in handy for the mushy stage, and they are cheap. Getting her a blender won't be seen a misogynistic. Trust me. I wasn't a fan of schlepping my sore self to Target to get one when I was allowed to have mushies. 5. Visit the recipe/nutrition portion of the site and give or make her some of the suggested mushy food. Try it yourself, you may like them! Beans w/ salsa... mmmmm 6. She really shouldn't carry anything more than 25 lbs for 10 days. Help with the heavy things.. laundry, kiddos, groceries, etc. 7. My husband got me gift certificates to places I've always wanted to shop. When I hit milestones, he surprised me with them and it was lovely. I'm so seriously touched that you thought to reach out and ask for feedback. Your wife is very lucky as are you to be a part of her journey.

    Surgeon In Kansas City?

My surgeon is Dr. Nicole Fearing who is with Malley Surgical. The staff is wonderful and Dr. Fearing is great to work with. I'm harder on myself than anyone can be and she will sit and talk as long as you need to during a routine fill appointment. I never feel rushed during these appointments. Something else to keep in mind is where the surgery is done, and Malley Surgical does their band procedures at New Hope Bariatrics (435/Nall). My outpatient stay there was the best I have experienced next to the Birth Place at Olathe Med. The surgical center is geared towards bariatric patients. It's a calming, warm and great environment. I loved the nurse I had there. Good luck! Looks like we have a lot of KC support going on here. --Carrie
  16. It's referred pain, and actually pain from the gas left in your abdomen that's pushing on your diaphragm and phrenic nerve. Gas-x, heating pads on your shoulder and walking will all help. Sometimes people get this pain when they eat and are too full, too. That's usually my sign to stop eating

    Hair Loss ):

Also simply going through surgery can mess with your body. Trauma from surgery can cause hair loss. FYI, it may also mess up your period for a few weeks too. Everyone else is right. The hair loss is from rapid weight loss and lack of protein. I lost a lot, but had a ton to start with, so only I noticed. My Dr said I needed at least 80gms of protein a day and to take Biotin supplement. The biotin will make your nails long and strong too. If I can't get 80gms of solid, food protein, then I supplement with a protein shake once a day.
  18. Lap-Band surgeries halted at 2 LA clinics: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/46309892/#.TzLxccjNlpw Is anyone impacted by this? I hope not. Kind of scary what may be going on.

Baked Egg With Hummus - Recipe

Roughly 115 cals / 10 fat / 4 carb / 8 protein based on how I made it. That will change depending on what other add-ins are included.
  20. Hi all, I found this recipe, made it today and want to share it because my mind was blown after eating it. It's Baked eggs with Hummus. The beauty of this recipe is that you can make it fit whatever your tastes are. I adapted by recipe from http://sabra.com/rec...ggs-with-Hummus - seriously, how pretty does that look? The picture on the site is WAY bigger than a regular ramekin; I think it was just the photography to make it look bigger. Use the normal, small size ramekins. I did not use olive oil to oil the ramekins; I used Olive Oil Pam. Here's how easy it is: 1. Spray the ramekin 2. Put 2TB (that's 1 serving) of hummus on the bottom. I used plain Sabra hummus. Use whatever flavor of hummus you like 3. Crack an egg on top - don't break the yolk 4. Salt and pepper the egg to your liking 5. Add extras. I used chopped onion, spinach and tomato (de-seeded). I imagine this would be amazing with any combination. Some suggestions: peppers, olives, capers, mushroom, dill, basil, feta, etc .. really any veggie that's not too watery. 6. Cook ramekins in baking dish on 400 until the egg white is cooked and the yolk is how you like it. I like a runny yolk. Took about 15 mins to cook Viola! Done! I made 4 so I'd have some for Breakfast this week (re-heated on low in the microwave). The ramekin size is the PERFECT portion for my band/portion control, and I am not hungry afterward. I'm seriously stoked to make more variations on this, and it's easy to make if you're serving a few people for breakfast. Did not feel diet at all. If I were a little more hungry, I'd just add a side of fruit. Felt like I had to share this to my fellow bandsters. Enjoy! -_Carrie
  21. I really suggest ThermaCare back/shoulder heat pads. You may get left shoulder pain from the laprascopic surgery. It's actually pain from your phrenic nerve along your diaphragm that resolves as left shoulder pain. I second the gatorade.. get the G2 version, which is lower in calories. Post-op is not about dieting or really watching calories; it's about healing, However, there is a lot of sugar in regular Gatorade. Crystal Light is also a good option. Pacific Organic makes a French Onion broth that I really like. It tastes like french onion soup if you get sick of chicken or beef broth.
  22. I think I'm too superstitious to lie about the reason I'm out. As an employer, they really shouldn't ask if you simply keep the explanation to, "I need time off for surgery." If they ask more, then just tell them you'd rather not discuss it. You're doing something very brave for yourself by having the surgery - be brave to be honest or stick to your guns by not wishing to disclose it to them.
  23. I used to use Fitday for the longest time. It did custom foods best when you want to enter in the nutritional value yourself. Searching for foods was not so great. I got a Fitbit for my birthday a week ago and love the Fitbit.com website for food tracking. Customizing foods is easy and there are TONS of pre-loaded foods where I don't have to look anything up.

    Stl Newbie Looking For Buddy

Good idea to so the liquid protein shakes. It gets you ready for the week after surgery of liquids, and it can help shrink the liver before surgery. I had my surgery in KC. Do you have some shakes picked out? I spent a few days trying out a few to make sure I found one brand I like.
