What side is your port on ? Can you choose what side ?

I am having my surgery at the end of the month ( self pay Mexico ) I am super nervous about it. I had my gall bladder removed serveral years ago and I have phantom pain on that side still. Can you choose what side your port goes on ? Also any advise on Dr. Juan Corvala would be great. -
I am going to Mexico at the end of March, I am a self pay. I am very worried about the same things. I feel however at this point it my life, this is my last hope. I am a carb / snacker / beer lover. Here's hoping that this works for me.
