embarassing question
mom2amwt replied to JerseyGal's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had same issue. Dr. told me it could also be an after effect from the anesthesia. Good luck. -
I was so glad that I had spent time on these boards and knew what was happening the first time (and only time so far) that I got stuck and slimed! It would have been a much scarier experience - except I understood what was happening. A little bit of dry tuna, a whole lot of pain in my chest and the slime! It lasted about 10 minutes and I still think about it every time I take a bite!

I bought a really great cookbook on my Kindle - Eating Well after weight loss Surgery. It tells you cals and servings and which recipes to make mushy. I have made a couple of really delicious things out of the book - My favorite is the turkey meatloaf. It's lean turkey with tomato juice and minced onion , parsley and eggbeaters - cooked for 1 hr at a low temp. It is very moist and delicious! I usually mix it with a half of a baked potato that I put in the blender with skim milk and fat free sour cream. Next favorite is Pasta free lasagna. I made it with ground turkey, thinly sliced zucchini, fat free ricotta, skim mozzarella and jarred sauce. Keeps me full for at least 4 hours. I also tried the turkey cutlet francese. It had to be blended, and it tasted great - but I am not a huge fan of the blended turkey/chicken cutlet texture. Each of the above is approx 200 cals per serving and very tasty! BTW - i tried tuna (put it in blender with light mayo). Not soft enough - it was the first time I got stuck and it was one of the most uncomfortable/painful 15 mins I have ever experienced. -
I am on my post op liquid diet (on day 4 of 10). I have been having roughly 600 cals a day - Protein shakes / Water etc. Thoughts on me having a glass of wine? It's a liquid....not on the official list . Sorry if this question has been asked a lot (I am new to the boards) Wine on day 4 post op - yes or no?

Are you open about being banded or
mom2amwt posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Are you keeping it private? For now - I am pretty private - only told family and one close friend. I kind of have an itch to tell people - because I am so excited, but for some reason I am afraid. You? -

You are right. I think that there are some people that have a tendency to be more harsh with their words or views, and even if they express the same opinion as ten others - it somehow sounds a lot worse. That said, in my opinion, the boards would be boring without differing views and disagreements. I still want to hear what everyone's views are - even if they don't align with mine. -
This thread is very inspiring! Thank you! I can't wait to get accomplish what you guys have! (esp the part about shopping for clothes in regular store and looking good in the clothes )

Working out post-op?
mom2amwt replied to frenchiekisses's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was banded on 1/11 too! I am at 228 lbs now. I haven't started working out yet - I wasn't doing it before I was banded and I don't feel terrific. I have some tightness in my chest. My plan is to get on the eliptical or treadmill for 1/2 each night this week. How many calories are you taking in at this point each day. Walking the dog that pulls (esp if he/she is big) sounds like a possible problem to me ... if your arm/chest area gets pulled to hard. I used to have a rottweiller that could get close to pulling my arm out of the socket . Now my dog is 10lbs!. -

Awesome!! That is so fantastic! I also love the boards because I don't have anyone else to talk to about this journey! Wish you the best! -

I think what you've said is generally right...but there is a difference between offering an opinion or a reality check and being rude or self righteous. Sometimes the line is close... -

Elfie - I've heard a lot of professionals talk about physical vs emotional hunger. I definitely have had both , but I would eat way beyond my physical hunger most times to get that "good" feeling. I guess you are talking about physical hunger. How do you deal with the emotional bits? thx -
Hi. Best of luck to you in your Quest for answers here. I do think that constant heartburn and irritation, throwing up or really anything that causes discomfort for a long period of time will be an emotional drain on someone. Pre-band - I had a chronic cough - caused by heartburn for about six months - that was making me miserable. I'm not sure I would have described myself as having emotional problems - but I guess I was emotionally distraught over my discomfort. Being overweight can cause emotional distress too! From everything my Dr. has told me, I have read on this board and in books - The band is not working correctly if it is causing the symptoms you describe above (regurgitation due to heart burn, stuck feeling in the throat). Maybe your could encourage your wife to go to back to her Dr. to discuss what she is suffering from (doesn't mean she has to have band removed). I also think that an ENT specialist might help - maybe she has some sort of sinus issue?? I think this is one for the specialists.

I guess my first mistake re the wine was posting my original question about it! I guess I was going to do whatever I wanted too anyway - but maybe I was looking for affirmation?? I know lots of people will disagree with things that I do or say - I just need to get comfortable with that. Makes life interesting in the end . Thanks all for the great responses! I still feel great - post wine . The one really positive for me was that I enjoyed one glass of wine and I sipped in slowly. I am also super happy to know that it didn't cause me any heart burn or discomfort!! Pre-band I was a fast fast drinker and because of that one glass really never did the trick. Not worth it for me right now to have "one a day", but I will be enjoying my wine in the future! CT Mom - Congrats on your weight loss - that is so awesome! Dave - I had a hiatal hernia too - and the dr. said it was really big??! I haven't noticed any big difference, but I am really really glad that I am not sitting around with my stomach hanging out of my diaphram any more !! Maybe if you have a few more sips of some good wine - you'll grow to like it! Jachut - I have been looking for more stuff to read! thx

Just a quick update - Despite some peoples raw disgust - I decided to go with having my glass of wine while watching the Jet game ! It was very relaxing - I could have had another, but needed to drive home in few hours. Doing it felt normal, nice and not a cheat at all. I paired it with my strained cream of chicken Soup . I the long run drinking will be better for me than the overeating. Not for everyone but definitely me!

Got my lap-band on the 14th
mom2amwt replied to Miss Na's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi I was banded on the 11th. I felt terrific when I woke up this am (good night last night too)! My first day that I totally felt like myself! These board helped me so much earlier today - I couldn't burp and I didn't get nervous - had read that it is hard to burp after the band . Thanks all! -
copy and paste it into your signature. Good luck - hope it works. Ann

Hi. New to the band (1/11/11). Wondering if folks could share their best and healthiest mushy foods?? Thanks in advance!

Please share your new focus after banding
mom2amwt posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Pre-banding or preparing for banding, my number one enjoyment was food (which is as sad as it sounds - and I didn't even realize that was the case ). I'm too new at this to have replaced that enjoyment (right now all I do is read about lap band and success and posts on these boards). Can you share what new things you do after banding to replace the enjoyment of food? Thanks in advance for the ideas! -

Melissa/Jacqui - You guys are both really inspiring! The gym is definitely something I need to explore. I am not afraid of exercise - but I still feel so big and embarrassed exercising in front of others. I realize I need to start physical activity ... but I am hesitant. Thanks for the great ideas. -
Swirl - Trying to understand - are you saying that the lap band doesn't help you feel satiated for longer and that you can still eat as much of whatever you want despite the band? My Dr. had told me that - you can still make bad choices with the band (e.g. eat whatever you want within reason), but that you will not be able to eat the quantities you ate before). He said for nutritional reasons, you obviously want to try to make more good choices than bad ones and that no matter what, in order to lose weight you need to limit your daily calorie intake and that the band is a tool to help you do that. Sounds like maybe your band is not working properly.... Have you done an analysis of how many calories you are eating each day to see if you are out of the 1000 - 1200 range? I have a good friend who had GB - she, just like a lap band patient, is not able to eat everything she wants - she has to restrict herself or she gets sick (dumping). But she did lose +300 lbs and has kept it off for 7 years. Her life turned around and she is doing terrific.

I almost forgot one of my biggest wishes - I have always wanted knee high boots. I have been embarrassed multiple times in stores trying them on and then don't fit above my calve or I can't zipper them. When I lose - that will be one of my first additions to the wardrobe (after the summer )

I love this post! I am a clothes addict - I love all fashion - and it stinks being only in the plus sizes. 1. Because not a lot of designers have plus sizes. 2. If they do, they don't really change the design to fit a plus size person. I can't wait to shop in regular stores or in the non-plus departments. Hope I never see those sales clerks in Woman's again . All that said - I want to get to the stage where I look good in a pair of jeans! May sound silly - but I am going to go out and buy the most kick @ss pair of expensive jeans - when I am 145lbs or below! In the meantime - I can't wait to wear shirts that don't have to come to my knees to hide my belly!!

mom2amwt replied to mom2amwt's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I love that saying! I do believe that the lap band is a "break up" with food. It was very upsetting for me during the pre-op diet to realize how much of my life was centered around food - not just the social stuff - but also my personal enjoyment. It is going to take a huge adjustment for me to get over that boyfriend .
