Anyone 60yrs. or over and have all comorbidities
ebonymc posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello! I have been wanting to get rid of my comorbidities as much as possible. Therefore; I chose to have sleeve surgery. I'm older now and afraid to have it . I feel it may be harder on me due to my age 67yrs old now. I don't want to have any amputations, bad heart and kidney failure like my parents and some of my siblings. I want to get healthier before these things start to happen to me. I've been having these issues a very long time now and blessed that I've avoided these things thus far. I just feel that I need to do this. I have been trying on my own for a long time and now I'm seriously needing this tool to jump start my new healthy life style that I want to do. I want to live a little longer and have a life. -

I KNOW THAT THEY WILL. THEN START HATING WHEN I CONTINUE TO LOSE. I've heard it once before ( You need to stop losing now) or (you're getting too small. You don't want to look sickly do you?)that was when I was banded, but I was still slightly over 200lbs. I have never been under 200lbs my whole adult life. It will feel good when i do. -

Thanks for your input. I chose sleeve because I weigh 230lbs. I hope the reflux wont be an issue for me I had the band b4 reflux is why I had it taken out 5 yrs. ago, I've learned from my mistakes. -
Any diabetics having or have had vsg? I'm in my 60's and still want to live. No heart issues yet.
-
Have any of you diabetics have success with your A1-C (blood sugar) since being sleeved? This is a major concern of mine and one of the biggest reasons for wanting the sleeve. My band was removed over two years ago but never came off my oral medication. Now my B/S is totally out of control

Thank you all for your comments. It's so nice to know that it could be done.

Band to sleeve one surgery or two?
ebonymc replied to My3angels031703's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My Dr. told me that It would be a little higher risk to do both at the same time, but it would also cost less to do it at the same time. I had my band removed 2.5 years ago and my comorbidities are now worse especially my B/S. I'm going through the process over again and will now meet with my surgeon again in 4 weeks for sleeve surgery. I don't weigh a whole lot at this time, but need to do this for health reasons. I hope you get to the right place with your revision and things get better for you very quickly.... -
Band to sleeve one surgery or two?
ebonymc replied to My3angels031703's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi, I had my band for 5 years and it has been removed for 2.5 years now. My surgeon said that it's like having two procedures b/c he'd have to remove the band and then proceed and do the sleeve. which to me meant more time under, a longer time in surgery, and a sorer belly. Although it's less expensive to do it all in one but after 2.5 years I have to do classes again. I'm hoping that my stomach is in better condition since waiting so long. Good luck, it may be worth the wait. -
Hello Everyone, did anyone have sciatica leg/hip pain that was relieved after surgery? Please answer...Good or Bad. I've just begun to have this problem one week ago. I have to have physical therapy next week. I'm afraid it may not get better after surgery.
-
Thanks guys. I had an appointment with a physical therapist today, and he performed a lot of deep massages to my hips, thighs and lower back as well as showing me a couple of leg stretches to do at home. I'm sort of achy and stiff in those areas right now but hopefully they will help in the long haul.

Confused. (Thinking to back out)
ebonymc replied to nb660's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am wanting the same (sleeve) and I've heard the same remarks as you and feel as you do. I had the band before and learned how to eat and drink at different times. You will adapt to that sooner than you think. As a matter of fact, my band has been removed for 2.5 years now and I still adhere to that automatically. I was inspired by a friend of mine that had the bypass. Our other friends made statements that She doesn't seem happy, but to me she did. I'm trying to rule out all negativity and so should you. Good Luck to us both! -
I'm wishing us all a happy and blessed outcome. No One was more afraid than I was when I was banded. I cancelled out so many times till they kicked me out of the program. I did nearly the same when it was removed. Now I have a 3 month wait and will have surgery then. I'm scared of loose skin, failing, and of hearing my husband say I told you so. My health issues are not getting any better. I only need to lose around 50-60 lbs and I'm hoping to use this tool to control my diabetes and other issues. We can do this but I still have a few months to get it together.

Anyone getting sleeve but have 60lbs or less to loose?
ebonymc replied to Nel71's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have 60 lbs to lose and my surgery date is around April 13th also. -
Hello again! Well after talking to the bariatric scheduler, I should be having my surgery either the end of March or 1st week in April. I've just turned 63 and my medicines are getting more and stronger. I'm ready, I'm tired of wondering what if this and what if that.

Hi! My name is Ebony and I've been here forever since the removal of my lap band. It was removed 2.5 years ago and I've been wanting the sleeve, researching, and asking questions a lot. Listening to all of these posts have really prompted me to go ahead with my fears. I turned 63 6 days ago and have a younger friend of my daughter's that had it done nearly 3 months ago and doing well. She has also inspired me to do this. So, I saw my PCP this morning and she has changed and added more meds to my diabetes ,HBP, and now cholesterol meds . I'm tired of going through this and feeling this way. She has now sent over a request to my bariatric Dr. to continue on with the surgery.

Yes, I'm where you are now. I've been pondering a lot longer than you have. My band was removed 2.5 years ago and my diabetes is out of control. KristenLe said it perfectly. I've read a lot of posts that makes very good sense, but until now none of it really sunk in till now. I'm 62 and still want to continue my activities a while longer. We can do this. you and I are the same, lets not give up. Good luck!

Hello friends, I have been here for a while now. In 2009, I had the lap band but like most I had it removed in 2014. I am still diabetic and still have HBP and cholesterol. With the band I had lost only 45 lbs and have regained 15 lbs back. I've always feared having another surgery no matter how bad I've always wanted it. My diabetes is getting worse and I've been put on an additional pill and it's still not controlled. I've finally come to my final decision as I sit here very tearful, to go ahead and have another surgery. I know RNY is better for me, but b/c of my weight (215) I'm choosing the sleeve. I guess it just really hit me today that due to my health I need to do this ASAP. I'm 60 and feel time is running out for me. I only hope that I haven't waited too long. Feeling sorry for myself and realizing that I want to pick myself up and live, I called my bariatric center and said " I'm Ready". I'm awaiting a return call.

Anyone starting weight at 200 lbs? Help :)
ebonymc replied to asolanom's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I saw my surgeon yesterday. My weight is 215lbs. I have all the comorbidities, 61 and scared of what's to come if I don't do this now. I'm scheduled for an EGD next week and need to let him know which surgery to do." WOMANVSMIRROW" was so right on target. 200 lbs is a lot of weight, but considered a low weight on these forums. Doing this for health purposes is terrific, and losing weight makes it all the better. I wish I had done this 20 years ago but since I didn't, I believe everyone else here that's had it and saying this. I guess it's like having your cake and eating it to. Good Luck! -

Everyone is inspiring me as well. I'm so sorry that I rescheduled my endoscopy and now have to wait another 3 weeks. My weight is 215 but my B/S is lower in the AM since I've switched meds, but I'm ready to get off all meds. Good luck and keep us posted. -

the rush for me is that I'm a out of control diabetic age of 60. I don't want to rush senselessly but for me, time is everything -
I was banded August 8 /09 and it was taken out August 4/14. I was having the same issues as everyone else. But one of the worst for me was the acid reflux. I worry about being sleeved b/c I've read about acid reflux after being banded. I had a little sour indigestion 3-4 times a year before the band, but nothing like the acid reflux from being too filled. Maybe one day we'll hear that the class action suit is now in effect.

It's called thinking that you're going to get healthy and look terrific much more quicker. In my case, that's exactly what I need to do. A lot of ppl think it's a quick fix. And yet like someone said, they can't see that some ppl can lose at will with diet and exercise. What about the ppl like myself that have tried all types of diets for years. my diabetes is now controlling me to the point that I need to gain control back. I've tried to do it with the lap band once before but only lost 45 of the 85 lbs that I needed. I've gained back nearly 20 of those back. I don't think that I'll be telling anyone except hubby that I'm getting the sleeve b/c when it really come down to it, other than family, most ppl are just plain jealous.
