I am almost 12 weeks post-op and I still haven't had any hunger since the surgery. My surgeon said this is uncommon, usually people regain their hunger about 3 weeks post-op when the swelling goes down. I don't know why it's different for me, but I love it. Good luck on your journey

Everyone says only eat if you are hungry, but...

I am 10 1/2 weeks post op and still have not regained hunger. My surgeon said that most people regain theirs about 3 weeks post op. My surgeon is very adamant that you don't eat if you are not hungry, so I asked them what to do about having none. They asked what I am doing now and I told them I only eat once every other, or every couple days. When I eat, I eat a small piece of lean meat and sometimes a veggie. Other than that, I drink a ton of water, crystal light, and a glass of vanilla soy milk every day. I also take an assortment of vitamins. The doctor said as long as I have no nutritional issues such as hair falling out, anemia, weakness, or dizziness, then I am ok to continue with my current diet. I know most people disagree with this kind of eating schedule, but I am just sharing my personal experience with you. Good luck and enjoy the no hunger while it lasts, I know I am -
I had 5 incisions. Four little ones that have shrunk to about a1/4 inch and the big one is about 3 inches. I had a severe hiatal hernia repair also which accounts for the larger incision. Good luck on your journey

I have Highmark BC/BS through the railroad so I'm sure it's not exactly the same, but it took them about 25 days to approve me. They told me they have 30 days to approve or deny, and they were always very helpful when I called and spoke with them. It actually took me longer to get my surgery date then for the insurance to approve, that took a little over a month before I had my surgery. Good luck, I hope it all works out.

Has anyone still not regained hunger?
muelle posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am doing some research on Ghrelin and would appreciate any information anyone could share with me. I will be asking my doctor at my next fill on 02/09/11 also. I am 10 weeks post op from getting a lapband and still have had no hunger. I am not complaining, it has been great to not feel hungry at all, but I am pretty sure it's not typical. My doctor's office said most people regain hunger within 3 weeks, but there is nothing wrong with me not regaining mine after so long. I read a thread about people who get the sleeve having the same issues because the part of the stomach that produces Ghrelin is cut out, which started me looking into everything Ghrelin controls. So this is where my problem is. I am a full time student with a very heavy schedule this semester and since the semester began 3 weeks ago, I have no ambition to do any homework or study. I also feel like I am having a hard time comprehending what is being taught. Since going back to school 2 semesters ago, I have carried straight A's, so I am very concerned my grades will drop. I read that Ghrelin is also connected to learning and some other things. Has anyone else had a similar experience, or know anything about this? I'd appreciate any information anyone can give, thank you in advance -
I had similar pressure also. I always describe it as feeling like a foot, head, or behind of a baby in my rib. Is that what you are experiencing? I had it off and on for about 6 weeks, it wasn't painful, but could get very annoying. I am now almost 10 weeks post op and it is pretty much gone. Once in awhile when I bend down I can feel it, but I just "readjust" and it goes away. My doctor said it is most likely scar tissue, but not to worry about it. I hope this helps, and good luck on your journey!

I've been married for almost 13 years, with my husband for 16 and our sex life had gone down hill the last year. I think it is because I had gotten so heavy, my husband said it didn't matter, but I know it did. We resumed activity 1 week after surgery, and have done it almost everyday since then I have had no issues with pain unless he accidently put pressure on my port. After about 6 weeks, that didn't bother me anymore. We both enjoy it more, so I would have to say I'm a happy customer

Pre-approval frustration
muelle replied to Russian_BANDit_inNY's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm from Nebraska, but I had issues with my stuff not being submitted to my insurance. Whenever I called the surgeon's office to talk to the person who took care of submitting papers, I would leave 1 message a day for 2 days and never get a return call. I would say something to the receptionist about not getting my calls returned, but it did no good, so then I would just call every hour until I was able to speak to the right person. I was told that my file was sent to my insurance on Sept. 9 2010, My insurance has a 30 approval time, so I called the office Oct. 6, 2010 to see if they had heard from my insurance, and she said that they hadn't. So I called my insurance the next day and surprise, surprise, they just received my paperwork the 6th! So I assume that the surgeon's office didn't even fax it until that day, I was pretty angry. I was FINALLY approved on October 25, 2010 and had surgery November 29th. It can be such a frustrating process, but it is definately worth it -
Let me start by saying, this is not typical and I have not seen any other doctors recommend what mine does. I am just sharing with you my experience. My doctor says don't eat if you aren't hungry and at 8 weeks post-op, I still have no hunger, so I only eat a small portion of lean meat every other day. Sometimes I'll have a little bit of a veggie with it also. Other than that I drink 1 cup of 1/2 decalf coffee, 4-5 bottles of water (2 of them usually with Crystal Light), and 8oz of light soy vanilla milk. per day.

when did your appetite come back?
muelle replied to adriennemarie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 8 weeks post-op and still have not experienced hunger again. I check with my doctor at 6 weeks when I got my 2nd fill and they said that is ok. I love not having hunger, I am dreading getting it back -
I just noticed we had the same surgeon I am truely impressed with how well you done! You've lost more than 10lbs per month and that's amazing. I too have days where I let my head get the best of me, but then I just pick myself up and start over. Good luck to you, I hope it works out for you

Do you feel the band inside? The port?

Do you feel the band inside? The port?
muelle replied to jazzyjen's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I was afraid of having something strange inside me also. I know it sounds weird to some people, but it was a genuine concern for me too. I was banded almost 8 weeks ago and haven't had any issues post-op. I just decided to think of it as part of me, because it becomes a part of you, mentally and physically. When I push on my stomach where the port is, I can just feel a lump, kind of like a hard knot. For the first 4 weeks post-op I could feel something (I don't know if it was the band or the port) pushing on my left ribcage. It wasn't painful, just uncomfortable at times, but it has pretty much disappeared. I can very occasionally still feel it if I sit for too long (like a 3 hour class ). One of the nurses at my surgeon's office had lapband surgery about 9 years ago and she kindly let me feel her port before I had surgery which helped ease my mind tremendously. Good luck to you on your journey! -
I didn't have stiches, but I had 17 staples and I too was terrified to get them out. It did not hurt at all, it took less than a minute for her to get all 17 out and it felt good to get them out

I have one and use it daily. I'm really not sure if it works yet though, I just started using it. I use it for about 1-3 minutes each in about 4 or 5 different positions. The only thing I don't like about it is that it is a little akward to use, but I can definately feel it working

I had my 1st fill about 3 weeks ago and did not feel any different at all for about a week, then I felt a very small amount of restriction. I had another fill last Wednesday and it took until yesterday for me to feel any restriction. I have 4ccs in a 14cc band. When they access my port, I can feel the needle go into the port, it's not pain, it's more like pressure? It doesn't hurt at all, but I can feel some pressure as the saline goes into the band. I found I had restriction the hard way. I have not had any problems eating anything, so I have not been chewing very well. Last night I took a bite of my daughter's steak, didn't chew very well, and had my 1st sliming experience. It was AWFUL and painful. Good luck to you

When did you return to work? (please share your experience)
muelle replied to NeedangerMGMT's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my lapband/hiatal hernia repair surgery 11/29/10, which was a Monday. I am a full time student, so I took the week off and had to go back to classes the next week because of finals. It was and exhausting week because for me, I felt like my port or band was pushing on my ribs whenever I sat up, so I was very uncomfortable sitting at the desk for 2 hours straight for an exam. I went back to school Tuesday, 6 weeks post-op and was it was 110% better. I agree that the more you move, the better you feel, so make sure to do that. I was up and walking within an hour of leaving post-op and being taken to my room. I would say take the extra time off, and you can always go back early -
I agree, if I let myself, I would snack all night. One thing I do to help aleviate this is, don't watch commercials! My husband and I have talked about this many times, if you are watching television after about 7:00, a huge amount of the commercials are about food. We either watch a movie or DVR our favorite shows and watch them the next night

Prior to and after my 1st fill I had no restriction and found myself gaining back 8 of the 25 lbs I had lost since surgery 4 weeks before. So January 1st I started the 5 day pouch test to jump start losing again. I was angry at myself because I was eating so much, but was never hungry, so I really worked at listening to my body and began the test. I did pretty well, I lost the 8 lbs and have been on track ever since. I no longer eat just because I want to, so I concider the test a success

I have a bit of a different perspective than everyone else. My surgeon says everytime I see him, "Don't eat if you are not hungry." So I stick to that, pretty much. I am 6 1/2 weeks post op and still don't have any hunger pains yet. When I do eat, I stay away from carbs and only eat lean meats. I do this every couple of days to get protien. I only drink water, crystal light, and light vanilla soy milk, so my daily calorie intake is less than 200 on most days. If I am feeling tired I eat some Greek yogurt or cottage cheese and that helps tremendously. I also make sure to take my vitamins. I saw the doctor for my 2nd fill Wednesday (I'm now at 4 ccs) and told the nurse practitioner that I am only eating every couple days and she said, "That's fine, don't eat if you are not hungry". She asked me if I am having any problems with being over tired or lightheaded, and I'm not. She said as long as I am not having any lack of nutrition side effects then I am ok with my diet. I have noticed that most doctors do not follow this approach though, and give their patients a certain amount of calories to take in, but I thought I'd add my experience to give a different insight. Good luck and I hope yo find what works for you

I too had to do a 6 month diet and by the time I got done with all of the other requirements it was about 8 months before I had my surgery from the time of my consult. I know it sounds like forever, but the 6 months will go by very fast. I actually gained weight during the 6 month diet because I took Fastin (Phentermine) the 1st 2 months and lost 20lbs, but had to discontinue using it because of side effects so I then gained about 25 over the next 4 months. Good luck, and hang in there, it is sooooo worth it

Total Out of Pocket Expenses so far anyone else want to share???
muelle replied to Amanda1982's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have been fortunate so far. I don't have all of my insurance approvals yet, but so far I have only paid my $30 copay for the initial visit with the surgeo'ns office. My insurance has 100% hospitol coverage so they have paid 100% of the anesthesia and surgeon's fee. I'm still waiting to hear what they will pay for the hospitol bill, that portion alone was $30,000, so I am a little nervous about that. Even if they deny some of it I hopefully won't be responsible for it because the hospitol is in my PPO. My insurance is Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield thru the Railroad. I was wondering about this also so look forward to replies -
I was lucky. I only had a clear liquid diet 1 day before surgery then for 3 days post op. Then I had a slip off the spoon diet for 1 week then 2-3 weeks post op I was ok'd for solids. I have tolerated everything very well and have had no problems at all. Good luck on your journey

Does getting a fill hurt?
muelle replied to mattie7632's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I too, love your disclaimer I had my first fill a couple weeks ago. I was very nervous and shared these feelings with my surgeon who reassured my that I would be ok. I asked him if he was going to numb me and he said that no he wouldn't, but I wouldn't feel any pain. He had me do a 1/2 crunch to raise the port and with one little stick he put 3 ccs in me and then had me drink about 4-6 oz. of Water to make sure it went down ok, and it did. It really did not hurt at all, and I am not even nervous for my 2nd fill which will be Wednesday. Good luck!!!
