  1. I had have had acid reflux so bad, and I am a stomach cleeper, and would wake up coughing-I know have apsiration pneumonia-very difficult to cure and a very long drawn out illness. If you have a mere HINT of acid reflux, please let you Band Doc know ASAP! Waking up coughing doesn't always mean upper respiratory infection-in my case, it was pneumonia from acid reflux.

    Help!!! Pain!!!!!!

If you are talking about 1-4 AM, like after you have gone to bed, then yes it could very well be heartburn or acid reflux. Try not eating several hours before you go to sleep. I can't just sit down and eat and watch TV sitting there the rest of the night either-I have to get up and move around so the food has a chance to digest and pass down into the lower stomach. If you can, try putting some books, bricks (in a pillow case), or something under your top mattress up by the head. Just putting extra pillows under your neck doesn't help-you can hurt your neck this way! Lifting the top part of the mattress, even just a few inches, will keep your body at a better angle so the reflux can't flow back up.

    STUCK!

I just had a nasty stuck episode last night with a piece of chicken I would swear I had chewed enough. I have been stuck once or twice before, but didn't have the pain like I did last night. I tried to make myself throw up(big mistake!), tried papaya enzymes-threw them up, tried hot tea-it finally started to break up something because as the tea came back up tiny micro pieces of chicken started coming with it I got almost no sleep. I hate when this happens!! If it does though-next day has to be soft mushies and liquids to give my stomach a chance to calm down. I know it is swollen and irritated inside now. I had a few bites of cream of wheat this morning and have been sipping on a non-carbonated drink. I will move up to a Protein shake later today, and probably greek yogurt tonight. I have learned in the last 8 months that while I may not have dome anything over the top to cause the "stuck" situation, how I treat meself the next 48 hours can keep it from happening for months.

    I'm kinda worried...

Melissannde you success is AMAZING. I hope I am this successful! I was banded 12/29/2010. I had my first fill Monday 02/14/2011. I got 4ccs in a 14cc band and feel NO restriction. I go back 02/28/2011. That said, I LOVE the phrase-refunding-so much better than PB or puking. I have NOT vomited. I don't intend to if I can help it. I did have one bout of lots of deep hard belching after eating lunch too fast at my desk one day.Nothing came up, but I learned to SLOW DOWN, chewchewchew, pay attention to what I am putting in my mouth. Yellow pee is dehydration or a result of something you have ingested, Silver. Does it STAY yellow or does it dissipate later in the day?

    Sept. 2010 Bandsters !!!

Hi Everyone! Eveeryone is from teh KC area right? Anyone else using Dr. Malley or New Hope Bariatrics? I was banded 12/29/2010. I have lost only a total of about 25 pounds I get my first fill today-I know, Valentine's Day, right? Something like poetic justice about that. Right now I don't feel like I have ANY restriction. I can eat almost normally. Almost. I struggle with stress eating. I am married with a stepdaughter (20) living with us and a daughter (17) who is a senior and we are trying to get her college stuff done. My husbnad DOES NOT COOK ANYTHING. We are at odds right now because I feel unsupported by him not stepping in at mealtime more-he doesn't have a weight problem. Not only a stress eater, a food addict. I will be the first to wave my hand in the air and say "My name is Bandcamp and I am addicted to food. I have a lot of people watching me. My Mom, who in love, paid for my surgery. My husband, who wants a healthy wife who is going to be around a few more years. Work, my boss had this done too, and is supportive and has done well. I am struggling with exercising. Why am I not more motivated? We got Wii so I would have it right there at the house. I try and walk at work, but some days end up with my butt in the seat at the computer too long. I have an online support group for stepmoms who have changed my life. I guess I am looking for something consistent here too. It seems like several of you come back quite often. This is really long-sorry! But count me in. I am a daily poster. As far as carbs-I am also seeing Dr. Mary Vernon-she wrote Atkins Diabetes Revolution. She has two offices-one in Shawnee and one in Lawrence. She is a low carb passionate preacher-she said good snacks are cheese, chunks of meat (small and chew well!), olives, almonds or macadamia nuts-just portion everything, Don't eat mindlessly. For breakfast or lunch she said eat an egg white omelette with cheese, spinach, feta cheese-chopped olives, chopped chives and tomoates-. All low carb. The egg whites are a great protein she said will keep me full and going going all day till next meal. So far I am still doing protein shakes. She referred my to www.leanerliving.com. They have recipes for pumpkin protein shakes :yum:

    Beer

I see Dr. Malley at the Malley Surgical Center in Kansas City. He doesn't buy into carbonation stretching the pouch. He said if you poured it in a baggie and closed it up it wouldn't stretch out the baggie, so why would it stretch out your stomach? I am NOT NOT NOT telling anyone to ignore drs. orders, it is just another viewpoint.

Gross, But I need to POOP

Going to get a little TMI here, but if you haven't gone in a while the part closest to your exit spot may have dried up a little a isn't going anywhere till you use a suppository or fleet enema. I went almost a week without going, had to use the enema and then pooped for two days. I now use Miralax every few days.

LOOKING FOR BANDERS IN THEIR 50'S!!!

Wow-I thought I had already responded to this thread- must be because I am 50, LOL. I forget a lot of things these days. I am from Kansas City, Kansas and I was banded 12/29/2010 My first fill is Valentine's day! I thought after surgery was painful, but have had time to heal and I am ready for the next step!!! It will be harder for us at this age, but we will be the ones to really appreciate how hard everyone has worked! Thanks to the folks who have reached their goal weights and still come back to give encouragement!!!! So many times people get what they want, reach their goal and go on to live their lives. I could never hold that against them, but I really really appreciate the rest of you.

    New at this

You guys aren't feeling your band, but you might be feeling your port. I can feel it under my skin. It was higher than I thought it would be, but I had scar tissue they had to work around too. I slept (when I slept!) with a big pillow held against my stomach. I also agree for the gas that a shot of Maalox or anything else with simethicone BEFORE YOU EAT will pave the way for a better experience when you eat. There is a medicine they make for colicky babies called Mylicon. We called it "joy juice" because my daughter wouldn't get real gassy when she ate. Same stuff I am talking about for us. It has really worked well for me.
  12. I did make a pot roast about 3 weeks out of surgery. Mine was juicy too, but I still took it all and whizzed it in the mini food processor. Then I poured on a little gravy. Still tasted YUM, but the fibers in the meat were broken down way more. {{hug}}
  13. I learned something from a group of cardiac nurses in the hospital I work in. They put about 2 oz of orange jiuce in their water bottles and fill it the rest of the way with water and/or ice. There is just enough juice mixed in to help keep your blood sugar up during the day without adding a lot of sugar. It has worked like magic for me.
  14. I get a 32oz Water every morning at work and put about 4 oz. orange juice and fill the rest with ice and water. I find that I do not have blood sugar spikes and drops by doing this. It also gives the water great flavor-even better if you add a crystal light early morning orange. I am much more likely to drink water that has some kind of flavor and natural sugar will kepp me more balanced thru the day. i do believe water has helped with my constipation and with losing weight.

    Diet coke post -op

I had my band done 12/29 and my Dr. is also in the "everything in moderation" camp. He said if you pour a diet coke into a baggie and seal it shut it won't explode or stretch the baggie, and your stomach is a lot thicker than a baggie. Did they say continue drinking two 32oz a day like pre-surgery? No. I went down to a 16oz to sip on in the afternoon after lunch. By the end of the day I am basically drinking water. I have had NO problems with it. I do sip though, not gulp.
  16. I didn't even THINK much less look before I took a HUGE Mucinex several hours ago. I have been nauseated and belching so hard all day-It is just nasty! I was banded 12 days ago. Any suggestions for "clearing the way"? I tried some Maalox, but no luck. Thanks for any help or ideas! I , aside from puking (I have felt like it but I am too scared!) I know MUCH better now!
  17. Thanks! I love the idea of this! I have to choose between my pants falling down or a big buckle digging into my stomach all day. I am getting one!
  18. I lov e the Low Carb SF. I got both flavors. Funny the only place I found them was Sam's too. I pour the can in a mixer of blender and throw the last 1/4 cup of leftover coffee to it in the am for a "frappacino" taste. Love it best with the chocolate. You can add a spoonful or two of canned pumpkin in with vanilla too and add pumpkin pie spice-I love that one too.
  19. I was banded the 29th of December. It has officially been one week! The pain was almost unbearable the first 48 hours. We have a high bed so getting in and out of it was hard, but luckily I had help! I did take almost all the liquid vicodin they gave me. I had a migraine from the recirculated dry air in the surgery center that took 2 days to go away. I literally did NOT sleep for almost 24 hours. I called the doctor's office about the migraine and they prescribed me phenigren (sp) for nausia and because it would "knock me out" so I could sleep off some of the headache. They did tell me to go ahead and take some ibuprofen also. I had a lot of scar tissue in my abdomen from a back surgery that the surgeons had to go thru the front, do some fo the work-sew me up and flip me over then cut in the back and finish. My Dr. said it took him 1 1/2 hours to get thru the scar tissue and they ended up having to put in an extra port to get the band on. I have 6 incision sites! Only one of them hurts-and it almost makes me buckle when I stand up. I did have the severe gas pains in my shoulders and back. Heating pad helped as did the old-fashioned GET UP AND WALK ) I asked myself at least 20 times "What the he!! did I do? Why did I do this stupid thing?" Because I knew I needed this. Because I did everything else on this earth to get healthy. The first three days were a nightmare for me, again because of the scar tissue. It should be all uphill from here right? I haven't vomited one time, or even felt like I needed to once the migraine went away. I CAN DO THIS!!!

    Need a protein shake

www.leanerliving.com I saw Dr.Mary Vernon who authored Atkins for Diabetics before my surgery as she is a bariatric specialist (former pres. of American Bariatric Society) to counsel me on what to eat AFTER the lap-band surgey. She ran a battery of tests and she will be my hand-in hand Dr. for nutrition and exercise. She recommended a company called leanerliving.com. NO THIS IS NOT AN AD, I don't work for them or her-lol. You can check my posts for proof-I was banded 12/29 and had the most AMAZING mushed carrots tonight! They have a chocolate Peanut Butter, chocolate, vanilla ice cream flavor. They also have a latte flavored one that has the blessed caffiene I crave every morning! I can't wait till that one gets here! I will let you know how they taste!

Bandsters for the week of December 27 ~ let's chat!

I am so gald it went so well for you guys! I had some complications-somewhat expected ( I had quite a bit of scar tissue from a previous surgery for my back where the surgeons had to do a 360 degree approach (going in from the front, then flipping over to the back.). The lapband surgery took 3 hours. He even had to add an extra port-6 total !! I did go home that night but spent the 48 hours with the migraine of my life and severe pain where the last port went in. I had the upper GI done before the surgery, and Dr. Malley thought he had it covered, but dayyyyyaaaaammmmmnnnnnnn. I am now about 72 hours post op and can drink broth, fruit juice and drinks, sherbert and had a bit of coffee this morning, My husband looked up post-op headache and said in many instances it is caffiene withdrawal! I drank coffee every morning and a diet coke during the day. No more diet coke for now, but I am sending my daughter out to Panera for a chai tea latte! (skim milk, of course) So what steps have you guys taken as far as nutrition and exercise? We got a Wii Fit for Christmas and my healthy normal weight husband has that set up and ready to go when I am up to it. I saw Dr. Mary Vernon who wrote Atkins for Diabetics who ran a battery of tests on my metabolism to find out what I need to eat post surgery to get thin and healthy. She is amazing, and passionate about the low carb approach. She believes and has done lots of studies that show that there is something different in our metabolism that makes us more prone to gain weight. It isn't an excuse though, but at least I have an internationally known doctor to confirm what I have know so long-I am not just a lazy out of control eater. It helps, but I still have to take the steps like anyone else. Lordy I am long winded! Glad everything is going so well for everyone! Michelle

Bandsters for the week of December 27 ~ let's chat!

You aren't crazy. Your racing thoughts are normal. The part that is worrying me for you is not knowing if you can "break up" with food (I use the same phrase-lol). Are you getting ANY kind of support outside of here? Any therapy, any support groups available thru your Dr, any Overeater's Anonymous meetings? I personally think OA would be great for anyone trying to learn to eat with LapBand. They encourage you to take your power back over your life and eat three meals a day-just like our doctors do. We are all here for the lapband issues, but for eating emotionally I wouldn't hesitate to find an OA group near you. I am on clear liquids today too! We can do this My surgery is tomorrow around 2:00PM central time! Michelle
  25. :{{{{HUG}}}} I am having my surgery tomorrow too. You wouldn't have been to the first appointment if you didn't believe in your heart this is the right first step for you. Lap Band isn't the answer to being thin forever, but it is what many of us need after years of growing stomachs and instant gratification, secret eating and looking for the "magic pill" to get the weight off. I have been ANXIOUS, but not fearful. I have faith in my doctor. I completly couldn't agree more that the problem with many support boards, including one I have been on for many years for back pain, is the people who have healed and had success move on to live their lives, while those of us who are nervous and researching meet up with those looking for reasons why their procedure didn't work. The percentages are far in your favor. Your Dr. wouldn't ok you if they thought you couldn't make it. Go back to that place where you BELIEVED IN YOURSELF. My name is Michelle, and I will be looking for your follow up on Thursday as well as posting mine! See you on the other side!
