Did anyone drink last night for NYE?
txprime posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was looking for *Beerguts* original thread... but could not find it. I was banded 10 days ago and did have 2 glasses of red wine last night. I know, I know, wine is not on the post op diet list... but only 3 carbs and 100 cal/glass.. so do not think the end of the world. Anyway, wine tasted different, I guess my pallette wil change? Any other wine drinkers notice that? Happy Happy New Year! I am sooo excited for 2011! -

Mattie- I understand you are in a sticky wicket situation... you seem like a reasonable person and I am sure that you will figure an amenable way to handle that is comfortable for you. Sorry if that s a deflective answer! -

Thanks for the responses... If some of you would have read the initial post.. I was asking wine drinkers if their pallette had changed once the received the band... and now it has turned to this. I am not running away like a two year old.. I just am not going to tolerate unwanted "abuse" from a stranger which I think being called stupid is... There are some folks on here who make sense and I will presumably just contact them individually. I think I'll go have a nice glass of wine now Cheers! -

I'm sorry.. I sure did not mean to worry you! If you were just having the base I'm sure that is fine. You will read so many different things on this site... but I'm sure you have not done any damage.. your body would "tell" you. I have found the nurses/advocates at the office helpful and they ring you back pretty quickly. Good luck to you and keep in touch. -

I am a little confused on the vagus nerve stimulation that I see some people writing about on here..... if it is about the vagus nerve (which is located in the head/neck) then why do we get the band on the stomach? VNS is used for a variety of things but I have not seen for weight loss thru the band anyway. Can someone please forward me the literature on this? Seems the VNS would be less intrusive than the lapband.. diet wise anyway. Thanks! "There's one vagus nerve on each side of your body. Each nerve runs from your brainstem through your neck and down to your chest and abdomen. With vagus nerve stimulation, a device called a pulse generator is surgically implanted in your chest. A wire threaded under your skin connects the pulse generator to the left vagus nerve in your neck. The pulse generator sends out electrical signals along the vagus nerve to your brain. These signals affect mood centers of your brain, which may improve depression symptoms." -

After many discouraging and unhelpful responses... I guess I'm going to give this a go somewhere else. I think people's morality gets too involved on this site. I'm sure I've been called a lots worse than stupid by a lot better. I am following the diet and have lost 23 lbs so far, and do not regret my little two glasses of wine, which is hardly my normal intake of alcohol. Been there, done that, eff off. -

Wow.. FtoF.. thanks for your pontificating response.... I did ask the nurse and she said a glass of wine would not be harmful.. i.e. hurting the band. -

Hi... I was with Dr. Hollis as well. Hope you are doing well. I understood as follows per the 4 page post op diet. The one that says "post this on your refrigerator". Week 1- Jello, Protein shakes, and chicken broth... including the smoothie king Protein shake if you want.. it is not a smoothie.. it's like having the fruit punch flavored protein shakes.. not like you are eating fresh fruit. Week 2- Protein shakes, Soup (YAY!).. but not campbells chunky or anything.. I have been sticking to tomato, cream of whatever... no rice/potato, and then low carb, sugar free yogurt... (2/day) Plus jello and broth as "snacks". This is NOT the mushy stage yet. My one cheat was trying to get a little tuna down and ate it too fast and it came right back up! My bad there. Week 3- This is mushy stage... I plan for mashed up tuna, chicken in a can and overcooked veg, eggs... plus all of the above as well. You know how anti-carb he is.. a lot of folks have been doing mashed potatoes and such but I know the pre-op diet of low/no carb WORKS so am sticking to it. Not sure about measuring 4 oz... was just going to eyeball 1/2 cup..really am going to test my restriction as well... what do you think? Week 4- Solids. How has your experience been other than issues with post-op diet? I really like his staff... have not spent any time with him per say. Happy New Year! Kelli -
Hi.. I was the same and rang the nurse to see if I should take something. She said not necessary becasue nothing really to form stool in there! Yesterday was day 9 and I had some soup and that got things going again.... As long as you do not feel bunged up I would let nature take its course.

I agree with others on telling the chiro.. after all chiros are "doctors" as well yes? BUT, I have a kind of funny story.. I was at the grocery buying a load of Jello for the first two weeks and pudding for the next two, plus vat size boxes of chicken broth, so the check out girl said "wow, that's a lot of jello, what are you making?" While my first instinct was to be a smart ass and say I was having a jello wrestling contest at my house and was she interested in intending.. I said I just had bariatric surgery. I got the puzzled deer in headlights stare in return. Most poeple do not know the word "bariatric" and since most people also do not want to look ignorant will not ask what that is and just let it pass. This is my plan for strangers/aquaintances. I am pretty open with everyone else... I'm a successful adult and make my own decisions and anyone that is important to me knows this. Happy New Year everyone! -
I was banded on 12/22 and similar to other folks I was nauseous directly after surgery, my fault however for sipping the water to fast. After that no nausea at all. I have, however, the first time I tried to eat tuna yesterday, not chewed up enough/ate too fast and had to spit it back up. It's not a nauseous feeling at all, just a tightness in your chest, I just kind of coughed and up it came. I was worried abt that awful sick to stomach feeling as well but from what I have read and personal experience, the band does not cause nausea at all, but may cause you to "spit" up in lieu of vomitting. Make sense? Good luck to you!

I am drinking the Mega Protein shakes mixed with water not milk. This was after trying about four other kinds that I thought tasted like mold mixed with vomit. I, too was allowed, protein shakes the day after surgery, but as mentioned quite often on this site the different surgeons have different ideas.

Any new bandsters drinking tonight??
txprime replied to beergut's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You betcha! I'm a wine drinker.. and was banded on the 21... am looking forwad to it! Will not go as crazy as usual and am assuming the low calories intake will directly impact the amount of wine needed to get a buzz..Happy New Year! -

Hi All- Banded 4 days ago, am doing well. Question I have is... what is the deal with diet soda? My Dr. is against it, (but I have not had the opportunity to ask him directly yet why??) actually says in the post op instructions that it cam damage the band. However, in the book he provided by a different physician.. claimed that diet soda is fine. Is it something to do with the carbonation? Then that would mean beer would be out too? Luckily, I'm a wine drinker.. haha. Look forward to your answers..... and thanks in advance!

Diet Soda... good or evil??
txprime replied to txprime's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks again everyone from their insight! In doing a little more research on the internet...seems there is basically a negative impact on wieght loss overall involving diet soda...lap band or not. Also, seems there is a average consensus on wating 3 months... seems you are doing great Kim with your weight loss and the one a day has done no harm! Congrats to you!! -
Ugh.. me too. And me too also on the next stage, dont think Ive ever looked so forward to a can of tomato soup!. I went out and about today for the first time to run errands.. and am pretty exhausted now. Also, my stupid bra was causing me pain.. hahaha, Anyway. I thnk the muscular pain on the left side is normal.. I quit taking the pain meds on Saturday... and am sore there as well.. am thinking that is the general area of the port perhaps and reaidual from the incision and cut into the abdomen? But of course ask your doc if you feel worried. Plus I think I have pushed it with bending over a lot. I am not very hungry, how about you?? I found out today that I have 10cc band and it is filled about 3cc. Hope you are feeling better.. if not take some pain meds.. better living thru chemistry I am down 19 lbs today.. am pretty ecstatic about that! How about you? Keep in touch. Cheers- Kelli

Diet Soda... good or evil??
txprime replied to txprime's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks for the additional info L12... I was sure to check that we could still drink alcohol hahaha.. but have heard so many conflicting stories...I was not a 12 pk (of soda) or even six pak a day drinker.. but for sure had a 12 oz once a day. I think perhaps the Drs. use the band as an instrument to change other bad lifestyle habits.. but I could be too conspiracy theory there. Thanks again. -
Diet Soda... good or evil??
txprime replied to txprime's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks for the replies. Everyone has their vices and me drinking soda between meals is my caffeine fix. Do not have to worry about the empty calories as diet soda has none, As far as chemicals, diet soda is the least of my worries at this point, haha .. Will further research the erosion effect it has on the band.. that does not sound promising. Thanks again Ladies and Happy New Year to you both! -

Thanks for your reply... I understand no carbonated drinks.. but I am one to question things.. why no carbonated drinks? How does the carbonation negatively effect the band? I am not keen on carbonated drinks now.. but am thinking more long term. If it is gas build up thing then there are ways to deal with that.... but actual damage to the band? -
Howdy from Houston- I was banded on the 21st.. my upper abdomen it still swollen but is subsiding every day. I have found that GasX strip are my new best friend as they help with the gas, as does walking around, (that is causing the pain in your left shoulder). Jello, chicken broth and the Protein shakes are what I am on now.. I am not really hungry at all however. Good luck.. it will get better.

Hi All- I was banded 4 days ago by Dr. Hollis as well, things are going great so far (fingers crossed) Would be fantastic if we could get together and share our experience(s). I live on the southwest side of town close to the medical center. January 18 sounds good to me. Maybe meet somewhere close to galleria area as that is central-ish?

5 days post op and made it through Christmas!
txprime replied to amber2604's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi All- Happy holidays to everyone! I am 4 days post op and am on the liquid diet..protein shakes with Water... broth and Jello. To be honest I am not really hungry at all, and lack of calories makes me tired pretty quickly. Today the soreness has really subsided in my abdomen, and I feel great! Next week I am allowed the 2 shakes of course along with pureed soup and yogurt for dinner, I am a little nervous to do any "real" food as I don't want it to get "stuck", which I guess means I would throw it up. I can tell when I take too big a bite of the jello as it feels very tight going down and get that weird pain in my left shoulder. I am down 17 lbs already as I went on pre op diet and lost 13 to start, We should all stay in contact as we are about the same time frame for our ops. Good luck and stay in touch!
