    *7* Truths Post-Op

My 14 and it's only been a month! 1. I was taking Midol or something else almost daily for headaches...have taken Tylenol twice since surgery. 2. Was hitting the snooze a gazillion times and would finally drag my butt out of bed wishing I could hours more. Now I hit the snooze once and am ready to jump out of bed, and sometimes I get up before the alarm even goes off. 3. Am able to take a nibble of something my son is eating with inhaling most of it or going to get another serving or more for myself. 4. Am happy to be in pictures now. 30 lbs. ago every picture was a bad picture...now, chances are good it will be a good one. 5. instead of inhaling a whole meal without realizing it, I am tasting every single bite and enjoying the food more. 6. Pork, beef, and seafood settles well, chicken not so much. 7. Eating 6 Bariatric Advantage Calcium chews a day makes me feel like I'm having tootsie rolls and star bursts every day. 8. I never bought into the no eating after a certain hour rule...it never made a difference in the way I felt. Now, if I eat anything "heavy" after 8, I feel heaving the rest of the night and go to bed telling myself not to eat late anymore. 9. I don't miss caffeinated drinks. The taste sometimes, but then I take a sip and hate it. 10. I join the parents team at my son's basketball practice tonight for a jump shot competition...never would have done that 30 pounds ago. 11. I don't have any clothes left that I have to cram myself into....it fits or is a little too big. Am also dragging stuff out of the skinny tub. 12. When I step on the scale and have lost a pound, I know I will never see it again. 13. When I step on the scale and haven't lost anything, I know I will very very soon. 14. I go full blast all week...and crash Friday night. A good night sleep gives me what I need for a great weekend.

    peanut butter???

When I need something....I grab a spoonful of peanut butter. i don't have any problems with it. I asked my surgeon if that was okay 10 days after surgery and he said it was okay...but to remember that it has a high amount of fat. I love it!

    Itchy Rash!

I was told that itchy means healing, red is okay, but not bright red, and don't know about a rash. Hope you doctor's office calls back soon.

    Self Pay question

I talked to my doctor on the phone (our son's play soccer together) on Dec. 5. He told me it was visible to get it done by the end of the month if I needed to do it by the end of the year for insurance purposes...when he found out I was self pay he said he could still do it be over Christmas break. I had a vacation planned so didn't do it that quickly. He had his office set my consult for the Dec. 14 knowing I was going to the mandatory seminar on Jan. 10. I got the paper work at the seminar and took it to my consult. Normally, I would have had to mail in the paper work and wait a few weeks. I got in for a sleep study quickly (Dec. 7) and had to wait for only a week for my psych eval (Dec. 12). I chose the my surgery date of Jan. 13 because that allowed me to come back from vacation and do the 10 day pre-op diet. Hope it goes quickly for you!

    How long out of work?

I am a teacher...and a very active one at that. i had surgery on Thursday. Returned the next Tuesday and worked half days followed by a busy weekend with my son's out of town basketball tournament. Returned to work full time the next week. Was tired when when I got home when I did the half days, but did great when I returned full time.

    post op vitamins...

I started multi, B12, iron a couple weeks before surgery...as soon as I has surgery I started Pepcid Complete (actually Pepcid AC because Complete has been recalled) and then two weeks later I switched from Pepcid to calcium.
  7. I picked up my new friend, Mr. CPAP Machine, five days ago and have used it every night. My air pressure is set at 12. The mask is fitting pretty good (nasal cup, no mouth) and I have been falling asleep quickly. I've been able to deal with it the entire night except for one night. I have been waking up often but falling right back asleep after a turn or an un-needed adjustment of the mask. One night, I simply removed the mask at 1 a.m. because I was annoyed with waking up so often. (Turns out I had the humidity set on 3, a notch to high, and I was getting to moist under the mask.) Last night I finally had a pretty solid sleep. I know this for several reasons....1. I don't remember waking up except for 2-3 times. 2. I woke up at 7 a.m. and was ready to get out of bed. 3. I woke up to my nine year old son laying next to me, and he has never been able to sneak in my bed without me waking up. 4. My mouth was a little dry, which means it was open a while without me waking up. Now for the questions! 1. Will there come a time that I will sleep (with the CPAP) the entire night without waking up at all? 2. I have to take my Mr. CPAP on my BIG DAY. They say they will use it in recovery. Does recovery mean in the recovery while I am coming out of anesthesia before I am taken to my room, or recovery in my room. I'm hoping it is the former. 3. What is that sweet, perfume like order I smell when I first the mask off in the morning? 4. What pressure is your CPAP set to? 5. Has your pressure been changed as you loose weight. Have you been able discontinue your CPAP with weight loss? Thanks for reading! And answering!

Working Out 4 Weeks Post Op?

I had surgery two week yesterday and went to the doctor on Tuesday for my first check up. My doctor checked my incisions and said they looked good. I don't have any soreness or pains. I asked him about working out and he told me that it was fine to exercise. He said he would hold off on sit ups...but said I can walk, do elliptical, play basketball, wii fitness, and whatever else I felt like doing. He said that if it hurts, don't do it. I've been walking pretty briskly and haven't had any problems.
  9. My surgery was 12 days ago. I was originally schedule for my first follow up 9 days after surgery, but I had to reschedule due to a school event for my son. I have lost 22 pounds since my consult on 12/14 and 13 pounds since 1/13 surgery. I feel great and as of Saturday (9 days post op) I feel like I am back 100%. I am a teacher and worked half days last week, and went back full days yesterday. I am full of energy and happy! My doctor told me I am on track. He took a quick look at my my incisions and said they were healing nicely. He told me I can move to foods that don't need chewed. Can I eat things made from tomatoe...I had heard that this is food that shouldn't be eaten until later due to acid. He said there is no reason not to eat them as long as they settle well with me. When is the..."It ain't gonna leak day." He said I'm there! Is Miralax okay instead of milk of magnesia, which is what was on my discharge papers. Yes, thank God. How long do I have to take chewable Vitamins. (Currently taking 2 multi vitamins, an Iron, a B12, and now Calcium. He said my vitamins should be chewable for about 6 months, and eventually I will only be taking one Vitamin a day. What's up with Peanut Butter. It has lots of Protein but I never hear about it. He said the peanut butter is like cheese and nuts, great protein but also a lot of fat. And you tend to eat, eat, eat. How much can I exercise? When can I play basketball with my 9 year old and do Wii Fit? He said I am good to go now. If it hurts, don't do it. I have to go back in 3 to 4 weeks. I am way happy!

    First Follow Up Visit

I so agree...it always amazes me how many different answers there are from everyone's doctor.

    Surprised!

    Thanks for sharing this!

    First Follow Up Visit

That's what I was expecting...but he said that they delay exercise so that the inner muscle at the incisions spots can heal, and mine have healed. He did say he wouldn't be doing sit ups and crunches...but wasn't planning to do those anyhow. =-) But I can do elliptical, so I guess I might need to dust it off.

How much help at home will I need?

I had surgery on a Thursday and came home at noon on Friday. I kenneled my dogs and sent my 9 year old on an overnight and was fine by myself. I even have stairs. I let them give me pain killer while in the hospital and started getting up to walk as soon as they would let me. When I got home just made sure to take it easy and sleep when I was tired. Have a variety of Clear liquids on hand in case you end up not liking what thought you would. Good luck! Dallas

Welcome! I don't have any advice because my insurance (KS BC/BS) didn't cover either. I hope it goes you way...and smoothly. =-) Dallas

    Amazing pictures! True inspiration!
  17. There may already be a January 2011 Group on here somewhere and if so i will delete this one and join. But just in case, I thought I would start one so that those of use getting sleeved next months can become and stay connected. About me.... I am 40 year old single mom of a 9 year old son. i recently hit 300 pounds, which I have been trying to avoid for a few years now. I made a decision to get a LapBand at the beginning of this month. As I explored that decision, I decided to go with the Sleeve instead. I have completed my sleep studies (Yep, got to go in twice! Last one last night...with a CPAP), I've had my psych eval, and I had my consult. I am self pay so it all seems to be moving so quickly and smoothly. I really feel for those who have to deal with insurance. I truly wish it were easier for you. I cannot tell you the feeling I felt yesterday when I got the call with my date. January 13! I am going on a cruise with family for Christmas and spending New Year's Eve and New Year's Day with my son in Orlando. We get back on January 2 and then I have my pre-op appointment on the 3. I will start my 10 day pre-op diet and then before I know it THE DAY will be here. I hope there are a lot of January 2011 Sleevers out there! ThatDudesMom

feel like i said to much

I don't think you should be worried. I don't think he would say you did fine and should be all set if there was something he was too concerned about. Hope you don't have to wait too long to find out!
  19. I found these at WalMart, but haven't tried them yet. I had asked the nurse at my doctor's office and she said they would be okay for the very beginning that they they eventually want me to get my protein from food versus supplements.

How long til cleared for travel?

I went on a cruise Dec. 17-31 and then spent two day in Orlando, returning home Jan. 2. Came home and started my pre-op diet on Jan. 3. Got sleeved on the 13th. I am so glad my surgery was right after a cruise. I had so much fun...and kind of saw it as my last chance to eat what I wanted, how much I wanted, and when I wanted. I was also very active... shuffle board, wave runner in the open ocean, boating, walking, swimming in the ocean. I would have hated to miss out on any of this. Now I can't wait to lose all this weight and go on another cruise!

    Help me help a friend

Is he open to the idea LAP-BAND but not the Sleeve? Or opposed to both?
  22. I am watching a recorded show of "The Talk." They are discussing the color of your clothing and what it says about you. They said that black means you are depressed, lazy, unimaginative, etc. Sharon Osborne, who was wearing black and always wears black on the show, took issue with it. She said she wears black because she is over weight and black hides it well. Julie Chan, who I love, says....you are not overweight, you look fabulous. That erks me! I had three girlfriends over a couple of days ago. One of them got a Lap-Band a year and half ago and has lost 60 lbs. The other two friends, who are hugely supportive of my upcoming BIG DAY, were asking questions because they are still trying to grap their head around weight loss surgery. She shared that she has lost 60 lbs. They were so happy for her. I asked her how much more she needs to loss. When she said that she would like to lose 50 more one of my friends gasped and assured her that she looks goods. That erks me! I was sharing my upcoming BIG DAY with a co-worker. She was very supportive of my decision, but was surprised. She kept going on about how good I looked. I told her I had between 150 and 130 pounds to lose. She insistent, in a very sweet way, that I carry it well. That erks me! Being at a healthy weight doesn't have anything to do with looking good. If you are overweight, your health is compromised. Just sayin'.
  23. I sent a message using "contact us" late last night. I sent a message about something else at the beginning of the week and got a personal response, so I am hopeful. Last night I went on because I had a question I really needed to answer. I did a topic search and was really happy to see a lot of thread related to the topic. Unfortunately....all the threads were in Pre or Post which meant they could not longer be accessed. I was really bummed!

    Should I dye my hair?

I dyed mine pink three days before surgery! I never dye my hair. But it is pink right now!

    Compression Stockings

Mine was on when I came out of surgery and the took them off as soon as I started getting up to walk which was a few hours after I completely came to. That night they put them back on around 10 at night when it looked like I was going to bed, but then when I got up every couple of hours to pee and walk they kept them off.
