Hi Jackye, I justed posted a thread called "Pain in the back of throat". Not sure I'm feeling what you're feeling but it's more of a pain, especially when I lay on my back. It intensifies when I breathe deeply. Is this at all what you're feeling? My surgeon can't figure it out. It's almost as if a nerve is being touched or something and triggering pain in my throat.

Hi everyone, thought I would finally post this question since the issue has not resolved itself as I was hoping it might. Did anyone else experience pain in the throat after surgery? It is hard to describe what I am feeling but I will try. I am 9 weeks post-op and have felt this pain in the back of my throat ever since surgery, especially when I lay on my back. When I go to bed at night and am lying on my back I can feel it. If I breathe deeply the pain intensifies. I had a bad experince a couple of weeks ago when I went for a massage. I started out on my stomach and everything was fine but when I turned onto my back, the pain in my throat was very bad and I immediately got very nauseous. I sat up immediately and managed to control the urge to spew everywhere. I have been discussing this with my surgeon and he has never heard of this but is still working on figuring it out. Has anyone else ever experienced this? Thanks for listening.

Everyone is doing so fantastic! You are all an inspiration! Andrew - can't wait for the playgirl issue to hit the stands. You'll be in the same issue as Brad Pitt, right? :whoo:

I was banded by Dr. Cobourn in May 2007. From pre-op to post-op Dr. C and the staff are excellent - very professional, supportive and exceptional at what they do. I was very pleased I chose them for my lapband surgery. There are many excellent clinics and surgeons out there. It sounds like you have done your research Sweetforlife so restassured you have made a great choice. :whoo:

Congrats! The time will fly by and before you know it you will be banded. My surgeon was Dr. Cobourn but I've spoken with Dr. Mumford on the phone and he is wonderful. They will take good care of you!

Personally, I think it's just your body adjusting. I was just freezing for a few weeks after surgery. I couldn't explain it either but just went with it. I piled on the blankets, PJs, socks and anything else I could think of. Hmmm... I remember thinking at the time though... if I had a nice warm, cuddly man in this bed with me right now I bet I wouldn't be cold anymore. Maybe you just need to give that man of yours lots of hugs... they say it brings up the body temp. too. :biggrin1:

Yoda - Well... I don't know about the spray on tan either - isn't that just chemicals? The skin is our biggest organ and doesn't that mean we are just absorbing a huge about of chemical?? Miranda, I have read other posts where poeple have gone to tan without any problems with the band or port. I guess it's a personal choice thing. I used to tan years ago but I stopped. Just decided I didn't want to do it anymore. I must say though... I do miss it at times - it's a culture all of it's own!

I'm having problems as well. Overall, the site is very slow and after I post or reply, I just get a white screen. I'm getting very frustrated. The site was running much, much better when I joined in Dec and it seems ever since the recent changes were implemented, it runs very slow and has issues. I'm sure everyone is doing all they can to rectify the problem but I thought I would just add my "frustrated two cents worth". -
I really can't say much more than Kim already has but I do long for a supprtive mom to talk me thru it! We all have issues with food that's why we are in Bandland. The great thing is... you have all of us to help you thru the tough times. Get back on plan and take care of yourself. Let your body heal. This is a really hard time but it does get better.

In the first 3 weeks of my journey, I was convinced I was going to be one of the those people who never needed a fill. I know I've read posts over the last six months from others who started losing right away and maintained the loss to reach goal without ever getting a fill. I was not hungry at all in the beginning and actually had to remind myself to eat - it was wonderful!!! Then, just shy of three weeks, I don't know what happened but all of a sudden my hunger came back with a vengance. Ever since then I've been struggling to not over eat. I guess this is what people call "bandster hell". I can't wait for my fill on June 25!!!!!!! It sure proves that everyone is very diffferent in their journey but as long as we're all successful, it does really matter how you get there.

Jetlagjane, I'm sorry you are feeling so yucky! Everyone reacts differently to surgery, some say they feel great right after and others like you and I don't feel so great. Just give yourself time and lots and lots of self care. You'll find that everyday it gets better and you'll probably be feeling alot better in a week or less. In addition to walking you might want to try a heating pad or ice pack across your tummy depending on which you prefer, hot or cold. Also, you might want to try a bed wedge, it'a a piece of foam you can buy at foam places or home care stores. I couldn't lay flat or on my side right after surgery so it really helped alot. Lastly, get some good videos, books or magazines or anything that will take your mind off your tummy for awhile. Between sleeping and being distracted the time will go faster and you'll be feeling great before you know it!!! Take care of yourself.
-
Congrats! I love the fact that you are so focused on YOU!! I think it's wonderful to give yourself non-food rewards and to be so positive about the person you are and want to be. You go girl!!!

If it's comfortable to sleep on your side then it's fine. It took me a couple of days to get there myself but I'm a side sleeper so I couldn't wait. If you don't like sleeping flat on your back you may want to get a bed wedge. It's just a piece of foam and you can buy one at any place that sells foam for beds or pillows. You can also buy them at health care places but they're quite expensive. The wedge helped me at the beginning. Congrats to both of you and welcome to bandland!

Hi Kim, I feel for you. I am just 5 weeks post-op and I had terrible gas for quite a few weeks. Lots of rumbling and banging around as well. In fact, I got to a point where I thought that it was just not humanly possible to have that much gas - but unfortunately, it is. The good news is... it does get better with time. Some people have it worse than others so it's difficult to say how long yours will last. Keep walking and use a heating pad if it helps you. I also found that laying on my sides, and flipping from side to side until some passed was helpful. I still have gas today but it's not near as bad as it was 3 weeks ago - not even close. As for the stitch thing, I'm no medical professional but I would think that is not possible. But hey, I appreciate your creative thought. Keep smilin' - it will get better!

Would you do it again or choose another option?

Serious, I'm not familiar with the gastric sleeve. Could you please explain what it is and how it would work differently from the band. Thanks, -
Nope, I don't think you'll get the bullet past security, shaker cup would be much better. You can also take a Slimfast to the airport with you and drink it just before you go thru security. You can't get Slimfast thru either because it's over 100ml. On the way back from TO after my surgery. I nursed a tomato juice on the plane and it lasted me almost the entire flight. Westjet had several juices to offer but I found the tomato juice really satisfying.

I was banded 5 weeks ago and have had lots of problems with pain in my shoulder. I have it when I'm hungry, if I've eaten too much, eaten something that causes gas like Beans or just out of the blue. I've had it almost everyday. I was hoping with time it would go away. Now, after reading your post, I'm not too sure if it will. It's a real pain!!!

It's a tough situation to be in as I agree with Travelgirl. It really depends on what type of people your parents are and what type of relationship you have with them. My parents are similar to Travelgirl's and therefore I would never take their money for such a life changing, important decision. It gives them too much power and risks you being bullied or manipulated. However, if your parents are truly geniune people and you have a good relationship and no power issues then I would gratefully accept their offer. If their intentions are pure and they really just want you to be healthy and happy, then they will likely support you no matter what happens. Good luck and keep us updated.

I just saw an ad on TV tonight for something called "alli". Didn't realize it was Xenical. You couldn't pay me enough to go thru that again. I was on it for about 3 months a couple of years ago. I didn't lose a whole lot of weight on it and the side effects outweighed any possible benefits by a long shot and, of course, I gained the small amount of weight back plus some.
-
Oh yeah! I did the last meal thing for about 3 months!! I'm still kicking myself because I have a bunch of extra weight to lose. Bad, bad me!!!

For me it was both. Right after surgery, same day, I felt very bloated and there was lots of rumbling going on in my stomach. Shoulder pain arrived soon after. As I understood it, the gas from surgery hangs around in your body and is absorbed by the tissues. It needs to exit the body sooner or later and for some people it is a slow... painful process. The pain in the shoulder can come and go without warning. You just have to try and do whatever you can to pass it such as use a heating pad, walk, lay on your sides, and walk some more. Once I started the full liquid stage, it seemed anything I put in my body built more gas. For instance, Protein drinks were the worst. I could feel the building and rumbling within minutes of drinking it. It does get better with time but I am 4 weeks out and still have a problem with gas in the stomach, sometimes I wonder if I will ever stop passing it. The shoulder pain still shows up once in awhile too although it is for much shorter periods of time. Hope this helps answer your question.

Kimmom, I'm sorry you're having so much gas pain. I had alot as well. Got extreme at times, much worse than I expected. I used a heating pad and walked as much as I could, even when I felt like I couldn't walk, I forced myself. Also, if you need pain meds use liquid tylenol or codeine. When you lay in bed try to roll to your side, this may feel uncomfortable but just go slowly, after a few minutes roll to the other side. Keep doing this until you start to pass gas. I don't know why your port site should be hurting so much. Do you mean it hurts when you touch it or just hurts period? Mine was abit sore but if I pressed on it, it really burned. This feeling subsides with time. Everyone has had great suggestions. Try them all and find what works for you but please know that some people have much worse gas pains than others. It really is time that resolves the issue. I'm four weeks post-op and still have some gas pains. Hopefully yours will resolve much sooner. Best wishes and keep smilin'!!!

I was happy that I took my bullet along, made my last few drinks and my soon to be first sips of Optifast after surgery much more pleasant. I also took my heating pad, comfy cloths, slip-on shoes, sun glasses, magazines, a good book, gax-x, liquid gravol, powdered chicken stock, my favorite tea and my pillow. I tend to over prepare, makes me feel better. I'm so excited for you that you have booked your surgery. Woohoo!!! :clap2::clap2::clap2::clap2::clap2::clap2::clap2::clap2:
