Hello - new here

Welcome to our group. You will find a ton of support here.
  3. When the body receives a wound or open area, whether through injury or surgery, there is a potential for 4 different types of fluids to drain from the area. Each is an indication of the processes taking place, signaling whether your body is successfully healing itself or if there is a condition or conditions which are interfering with the proper healing of the wound. Sanguinous or bloody drainage: When a wound is fresh, there is likely to be bright red drainage from it which indicates active injury. The body rushes blood to the area to begin the healing process immediately upon injury or incision. After surgery or incision, there may be small amounts of bloody drainage from the incision area. In some cases larger amounts of blood can be expected and will likely be contained within a wound drainage system secured to the surgical area.
Serous or clear drainage: A clear, watery drainage or presence of Fluid on the wound or draining from the wound/incision site. This is one of the normal processes of early healing, but should subside after the healing process is sufficiently underway, which will depend on the type and severity of the wound or incision.
Sero-sanguinous or pink or white drainage with flecks or rivulets of blood: This type of drainage is not uncommon early in the healing process. The amount of such drainage may indicate to health-care providers that active bleeding is continuing in the wound or under the incision site.
Purulent or pus drainage: Purulent drainage may be yellow, green or light brown in color with a characteristic smell of pus. This is not a normal type of drainage from a wound or incision area and will likely be accompanied with increased redness, warmth and some swelling to the wound or incision area and you may experience an elevated temperature. Purulent drainage should be reported to your health-care provider as soon as possible. The Pilonidal Support Alliance details another drainage that you are likely to notice beginning about 5 days after surgery, a drainage called exudate. This drainage may vary in color from white to yellow to gray to light brown and have a small amount of odor. This drainage is from your body working to cleanse itself of dead tissue and other materials which interfere with the healing process.
If the drainage has a strong odor, or any signs of infection are present such as increase warmth and redness, increased pain, and/or swelling to the incision site, contact your health-care provider. i dont know what to do.

First two weeks of liquid diet Bouillon, broth cheese soup Fresh or frozen plain yogurt - Greek Yogurt h]is high in Protein Liquid Meal Replacements (Protien Shakes) Plain Gelatin Desserts (sugar free / Fat Free Jello) Refined/strained cooked Cereal (Cream of Wheat) Strained or blenderized soup - No chunks Water Gatorade Herbal Tea - No Caffine (Caffine is a diuretic and will dehydrate you.) This is the guide I have for the first two weeks post op. You will be so suprised how little you will be able to eat post op. I can not even describe it. It is much easier for me to consume food that is room temp or warmer. A cup of tea is alot easier to sip than a glass of cold water. I was really sick of the sweet tasting stuff after the first few days so if you can find some Soups to eat between protien shakes it helps. You really need to get your protien in to help you heal quicker. Hope this helps.

    Surgery in 3 days. Scared.

I just had my surgery on Monday. I was so nervous when I got to the hospital. I almost ran out the door just before they took me in the back. I told the nurse I was super nervous and she was so nice. I felt pretty calm after I met with everyone. The anethesiologist gave me something to calm me down and that was the last thing I remember. When I woke up I had wonderful care. They allowed my hubby to spend the night, which made me much more comfortable. Oh ya the Morphine pump also helped make me comfortable as well. LOL It will all work out. Keep us posted!

    help with nausea?

Maybe your doctor could get you a Scopolamine patch (Brand name: Transderm Scop) this is a patch that is used for motion sickness. I had my procedure on Monday and woke up with nausea. They placed the patch on me and it resolved my nausea. It will last 7 - 10 days wich should be perfect. Easy to apply - just make sure you wash your hands REALLY good after touching these. Good Luck.

    Can I be completely honest?

I was just sleeved on Monday and I did not have a cath either. I think you should just talk to the doctor. I was able to get up and go to the bathroom a couple of hours after my surgery. I was still out of it but was able to follow commands to get out of bed and go to the bathroom and make it back. Good luck - I was a bunch of nerves last week. Now I am on my way to the NEW me! You will do Great!

6 months and I'm not losing!

How frustrating for you. I had to do a 2 week pre-op liquid diet and was able to loose 10 lbs prior to surgery. I basically drank 3-4 Myoplex Light - Choc Fudge shakes - almost every day. (They are 11 oz box drink) Plus 64 oz of liquid each day. I found that if I drank 1/2 of a shake every 2-3 hours I would not get hungry. I just had my surgery on Monday and am now trying to get that much in - I am not having ANY hunger pangs but am still sore from my surgery. Protein is so important for healing and maintaining muscle mass. I don't know if you have went to this extreme but thought I would throw it out there for you to talk to your NUT about. Hang in There!

    Thank You

Sounds like you are doing great! This forum has provided me with a lot of information and wonderful people that have been very supportive. My hubby is also super supportive but still does not have the experience to help or be supportive in certain situations. Thank you to all for being candid about what you are going thru. It is very helpful to all.
