Hiding the Lap Band from friends at meals
bodyfixer replied to momnear40's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Living in Indonesia as I do eating out is a must - a social pastime enjoyed with family and friends at a moments notice - sometimes 3 or 4 times each week All of my friends know I have been banded and are fully supportive - so much so that when dining out it becomes a game to find the most appropriate meal for me Most menu items and ingredients are listed in Bahasa Indonesia - not English - and it can be very tricky to determine what is best so I welcome their input to my ever decreasing waistline and improving health Everyone has an opinion based on their knowledge of what my dietitian has prescribed and what is on the menu and friendly arguments are the norm. Too many carbs says one - not enough Protein says another - No No No - that will get stuck says a third So Bon Apetit ! and enjoy your life as a bandit without a care of what others will think - if they love you then they will support you -
Had my second fill last Friday (.8 cc - first fill 1cc) - but it was too much I can get fluids down but even soft food gets stuck and I end up ralphing over the toilet Im going back to see my Dr today for a small unfill. I text him last nite to advise and he wanted me to come straight away but it would have been a 2 - 3 hour trip from my hotel to the hospital he was consulting at - and in Jakarta peak hour traffic that would have been too much to handle even if I was feeling well!! Today we will meet at his usual hospital which is only a 5 minute taxi ride away Such an incredibly caring man to come in on a Sunday
-
Instant relief - he removed .8cc and I just had some rice & chicken porridge with no problems I will have something more solid later Dr said he was available anytime I had problems and to just text him
-
Reverie - can you please use a decent size font and change the color of the one you are using It is too small and difficult to read (for some people) I like your comments but mostly now have to brush past them as my tired old eyes have difficulty Stick to the standard Arial size 2 and I think eveyone will be happy

Weight loss seems stalled 3 weeks post-op
bodyfixer replied to SupportiveWife's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When the scales stall I get out the tape measure and find that the inches are coming off even though the weight does not appear to do so As you lose weight you tend to become more active - building muscle at the same time as losing fat The weight might not change much but the tape measure never lies Good luck to us all Im going for my second fill next week and feel that I am doing OK so far Half way to my goal in just 4 months -
All of my consultations with the surgeon or dietitian plus all of my fills are free until I reach my target weight I am self pay and that was the agreement we reached prior to surgery My total cost was $6500 My banding was done in Jakarta Indonesia ( I live here) by Indonesia's leading lap band surgeon Dr Barlian Sutedje Director General of the Gading Pluit Hospital

My wonderful housekeeper comes up to me every day when she arrives at work - throws her arms around my (once) corpulent waist and then gets my nephew to measure the distance between her hands to see how much more to go before her hands touch Nearly there Boss she says with her cheeky smile Get longer arms I keep saying to her. Maybe the Doctor can elastic band my arms she says before going off to get my oatmeal, Protein powder and daily banana Im not let eat anything even remotely bad - she watches me like an overprotective mother hawk (Dont tell her we are going out for pizza tonite - even if it is only salad bar for me) Regards from Yogyakarta Indonesia -
I'm back in Australia from my home in Indonesia for my niece's wedding next week and am staying at my son and daughter-in-law's home while I am there My Granddaughter - 5 years old - said to me last nite - "Grandpa, I can sit on your knee now cause your tummy is not there any more" Not to be outdone - 8 year old Grandson says - "Hey Grandpa - you're not fat any more" I asked if I was not fat then what was I He thinks for a minute and proudly announces that "You're not fat - you're FRUMPY" From henceforth I am now known as Grandpa Frumpy

here of of sheer frustration
bodyfixer replied to missyt's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Your Doctor was absolutely correct on EVERY point - maybe could have been more diplomatic about it - but nevertheless correct You have had 3.5 years to get this right - and in that time you did not. You make excuses about lifestyle and how busy you are but you never once admit that you did not try to make it work You admit that you have nor followed up with a doctor for over a year - even though you knew you needed advise, help and support Dont ever dare to blame the doctor for that - Doctors are NOT mind readers - they can only work on what is presented to them and you did not present anything for over a year (probably longer) So girl - get with the act - follow your doctors orders and make a decision about your fat life versus your thin life And if anyone thinks Im being harsh - well perhaps I am. Dont blame anyone except yourself for failure To Sweetgrace who made the comment "Your doctor sounds like an absolute jerk and obviously male." Grow up and think before you open your mouth. In my experience most of the biggest bitches in the medical profession are female -
A new milestone I measure in Kilograms so for Americans this maybe not too important BUT for me it is I hopped onto the scales this morning to find that I had broken thru the 100 Kilogram (220lb) barrier and my weight now stands at 98.5 kg (217 lbs) This is my lowest weight since 2002 and I am on target to break 90 kgs (198lbs) by the time I attend my niece's wedding on 13 March (give or take a kilo) If I can do that would be an amazing 30 kg (66 lbs) since 1 November when I started my pre-op diet I have only had 1 fill of 2 cc's and feel enough restriction so far. I'm never hungry and have to remind myself to eat most times. My housekeeper is frustrated that she never has to cook for me now and the household food bill is halved. My wonderful partner Didin is so supportive attending the gym with me every morning at 6am - sometimes forcing me out of bed when I just want that extra 30 minutes sleep and measuring my food carefully for calorie content and serving size. I call Didin my external lapband Last nite for the first time since the end of October I had some fried food - chicken nuggets and fries - and it tasted AWFUL to me. Seems like I have lost the taste for fast fried food. Last weekend at a friend's birthday party I turned down black forest cake (used to be my favorite). I haven' t felt like a soda for months and am quite happy drinking lemon tea or coconut Water I know these things are not because of the band but because I can see success ahead of me and I LIKE IT Good luck to all on the journey to a new and happier, healthier and slimmer you

Can you spot the odd man out? Yes thats right. Anyone who said it is Dwi (front left) is right. Dwi no longer works at Wotzgnu Creative Designs But seriously these are the first photos that I have voluntarily been in for over 10 years. Losing 40 lbs has boosted my self confidence and helped me join in where previously I would have sat on the sidelines watching. Today I went quad bike riding and swimming in full view of others -AND IT WAS FUN!!!!!! I have a long way to go still but each day it gets easier to be active and easier to be positive about the changes taking place in my life. A note to EVERY bandster - Dont give up - there is a life out there that you can enjoy so go and grab it with both hands and tell it you have arrived and that you are in charge - forever.

Hey everyone! Lap Banded here on Jan 19th 2011
bodyfixer replied to Andy Dufresne's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hey Andy Great news - soon the hole in wall at Shawshank won't have to be so big All the best to you rockhound -
Had my first fill last week - 2cc - 2 months after banding My Doctor said no more fills for at least 2 months (and the way I feel now I doubt that I will need any more due to the restriction I feel now) and no more than .08cc each fill after that. Im happy to accept his advice as I am losing weight at a satisfactory rate By the way - he does not charge me for follow up consultations or fills nor does the dietician at our monthly meetings. I am self pay and it was an all in lifetime care arrangement for a total of $6000 including the banding

No Adjustment Yet
bodyfixer replied to 4MyHealth2011's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Had my first fill on Saturday - 2cc's Felt restriction almost immediately and have lost 1kg (2.2lbs) in the past 2 days The hunger has gone and I am pushing the plate away mostly uneaten Im heading towards One-derland and hope to be there before my niece's wedding on 13 March Wish me luck as I too wish everyone good luck Regards from Yogyakarta Indonesia -
Had to fly home the other day from Jakarta to Yogyakarta to be home with the family for Christmas (I live in Indonesia) I was in Jakarta for a check up with my Dr and to see some business clients I only had carry on luggage. We are fairly casual with clothing here - shorts, sandals and a nice T shirt is OK for general day to day activities when travelling short distances by plane Got on the plane and found my seat - went to put my luggage in the overhead and as I reached up - my pants fell down You know you have lost weight when that happens. Of course there was some embarrassment from some of the more refined Muslim ladies - but the general mood from other passengers was a laugh and a helping hand to recover my falling luggage and my falling pants Dont'cha just love lapbands???

Ive suffered from sleep Apnea for over 20 years - about the same period of time that I have suffered from obesity. At times I have had to use a CPAP machine to assist breathing at nite I advised the surgeon about it prior to undertaking banding and I discussed it with the anaesthesiologist when she visited for her consultation the day before surgery My surgery took 7 hours from the time I left the ward until the time I returned - there were a few small complications during surgery but nothing very dramatic according to my Doctor I had no problems waking up. 6 weeks into banding and the apnea has almost gone - as has over 15 kg (30 lbs) of excess fat. Im sleeping better and can get thru the day easily without a sleep or even feeling tired. In fact I am starting to get into a REM sleep pattern and am dreaming again - something I have not done in years because of the apnea I am more alert and active as well. Blood pressure returning to normal. Emphysema much better now that some pressure is off my lungs and my clothes are fitting easier (refer my story about losing my pants on the plane back to Yogyakarta after my first checkup) Quality of life is so much better after banding - and will only get better with each reduced kilogram

The key to my success is my refrigerator Yep! My fridge is my best weight loss friend - that and my cell phone!!! How and why? Firstly I have my own fridge in the house - nobody but me uses it The main fridge has a built in lock on it. My partner has a key. My nephew has a key and our housekeeper has a key. I don't In my fridge goes my food only. Anything that I am not allowed to have goes in the main fridge and is locked to prevent temptation. My second best friend is my cell phone - with the number of my dietitian on speed dial. If I am in any doubt about what I can or cannot have I text her for an immediate approval or rejection. I am down 30 lbs since 1 November when I started the pre-op and 20 lbs since being banded on 11 November I have not had a fill and my Dr is not anticipating that I will have a fill for some time. I got thru Xmas dinner by having a small serve of turkey and cranberry sauce with potato salad. I rejected the cake and ice cream and apple pie - my will power to succeed amazed me. The hug and kiss I got from my loving partner for being responsible was better than cake and ice cream anyway. Honestly - it really was. BUT - when I got home a friend who did not know that I have been banded bought me a gift of chocolate brownies - MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE dessert It went into the locked fridge and a distress call went to Dr Cindi - I WAS APPROVED - for half a brownie and a 1 mile walk - the rest was put into the freezer until I reach my next milestone of 220 lbs - only 12 more lbs to go before BROWNIE TIME Merry Christmas to all from Indonesia

Anyone else intimidated by the skinny's at the gym??
bodyfixer replied to JMinDallas's topic in Fitness & Exercise
Im at my gym 6 days each week for 2 hours each day Living in Indonesia as I do EVERYONE is thin and my first few weeks were difficult but it got better Asians tend to keep quiet when a white guy is around in the gym and my gym was no different There were the sideways stares and whispered comments behind hands and the chuckles when I did not use a machine correctly The second time I made the mistake and the whispers and stares started I simply said in fluent Bahasa Indonesia (the local language) that if I was wrong then they should have the manners to show me rather than ridicule me behind my back The jaws dropped and eyes widened when they realised I could understand every word they had been saying for weeks. Embarassment set in for a while but a few self criticisms from me eased the way After that there was a rush to help - even the personal trainers were offering free sessons - which I accepted Now we are all good friends and work out together -the little AND the (not so) large
