My story--banded for 9.5 years.
carol285 replied to MeganA's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I think there are risks and/or complications with ANY surgery, weight loss/cosmetic/medical treatments/experimental treatments etc. There are too many variables in the human body (genetically & mentally) to say that complications or damage WILL ALWAYS or WILL NEVER happen. As the mother of a child with Autism & living the hot debates on causes, effects, cures etc, the in fighting when one person doesn't believe this approach or that approach. It gets ugly & completely not needed!! What the heck is wrong with just being informative about your personal journey BUT not telling others they are kidding themselves? Again no 2 peoples body & mind are the same so no 2 people will have the same exact results. That is the beauty of there being multiple surgical options for people who choose this route as well as multiple diet plans for people who do not. I for one do not want to be told never, I want choice along with information. We are all on a personal journey & being frank some will have horrible complications & some will have none, some will not see good success even with good effort & some will see amazing success. My wish for everyone is success with whatever option they choose even if NO especially if it isn't an option I choose because you know what I have no right to choose for anyone else but myself. So live long, be healthy, be happy each and every one of you & good luck on you journey!!! -
Exciting isn't it!!!! Congratulations

I was banded 10/25/10 & while it hasn't been a totally straight down the scale journey & having lost 107lbs I still need to lose about 25lbs more I am the type to tell everyone. The way I see it is they have seen me fail a million times at weight loss & if I failed even after surgery no one would be surprised LOL!! Also I personally feel if I treat it like a secret it makes me feel shameful about it. I come from a long line of addicts (alcohol or smoking) & even though no one really struggles with their weight I didn't want this process to be a secret. I wanted to take ownership & pride in my decision to try a bold step in my efforts to lose weight.

carol285 replied to edmontongirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm in NY but have a bunch of relatives in Mississauga so I will ask them if they have heard anything good or bad about that doctor/place if you like. While none have themselves had weight loss surgery they have extensive friend networks -
I am 5'3 & 48 years old..... I started at 285lbs, size 26/28 top & 24 pants. Currently weigh 177lbs and am mostly a size 12 bottoms (I have some 10's that fit & some things that still need a size 14), tops currently a medium to large. For the height/weight charts I am still considered obese until I an under 170 and the Weight Watchers range has a top goal weight of 141 for my height. All that being said I have no flipping clue what my goal weight is as my only relatively normal adult wight was 169lbs & that was almost 14 years ago I also have a fair amount of excess skin that I will be unable to do anything about surgically speaking since I have a disabled husband & son and can't go through that level of intense recovery. So I am taking it 5lbs at a time for now but think I can live with anything below 160lbs.

Repeat after me.......We the overweight can always lose weight & one day no longer be overweight BUT a rude, crude & obnoxious a*****e will ALWAYS be a rude, crude obnoxious a*****e even with diet & exercise so I think I'll stick with our issue thank you very much, it is so much lovelier ladies!!!!

How strange, I would definitely try to find another doctor! While the band is not the answer for everyone & is a tool in the weight loss journey nothing such a simple thing. Certainly requires more time spent with a doctor to make those decisions

How did the doctor appointment go???
-
Such an awesome accomplishment congrats!!!!!
-
Most journeys are not a straight road so you happen to take a bit of the scenic route, you are still traveling so be proud of that & good luck with your appointment!!!!
-
Not knowing your stats could it be that at least 10lbs of that could be excess skin from your weight loss? I know of several successful banders that had various degrees of skin removal surgery, lifts etc that easily accounted for between 10-20lbs depending on the persons body

approval without letter of necessity

My PCP wasn't initially supportive but then my Cardiologist actually asked me if I ever considered WLS so I told him I have & very seriously recently but my PCP seemed less then in favor of this route. So he put in his notes that he discussed this as a viable option for me. I then went back to PCP & she sang a different tune!!! -
I hear you because by the time I hit the 100 lbs lost mark my wedding band was flying off my finger left & right!! Being that it had a design it was unable to be made smaller so my darling husband decided we should get new matching wedding bands......why would I argue LOL!! Congrats on your success, enjoy

Need Advice! Unsure if I need some taken out of my band or not.
carol285 replied to lea3277's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have to be honest what your doctor told you doesn't sound right to me if you were totally honest about your pain & how little you could actually drink! I don't think a doctor should be OK with it really. My doctor gets concerned if I can't consume adequate liquid for even 24hrs. How long have you been seeing this new doctor? Also another concern I thought of later was that you have not had your band maintained/observed or whatever the proper word is since 6 months after your surgery so that would add an extra level of concern for me. Did they do the fill by floroscope? -

In my opinion this is not normal & you are too tight -
Surgery was 2 1/2 years ago, I've lost 109 lbs so far & I can still feel my port. It doesn't stick out but I can certainly feel where it is & if I lay on my stomach on a particularly hard surface it is especially noticeable. All completely normal

I am also a side sleeper & found a quite comfortable way to sleep that way right after surgery. I put a body pillow in front & behind me so I was suggled in soft squishy pillows. It was very comfortable!! If you don't have body pillows two pillow on each side create the same feeling.

Awesome!!!! I recently passed the 100 lb milestone myself & know while it is an amazing feeling it can also be emotionally confusing at times too. I took a much slower road to the 100 lbs since life got complicated along the way. I lost 85 lbs quickly, then put back 20lbs but now have been heading down again and am up to losing 107.5lbs You are doing an amazing thing for yourself & believe me your head, body, heart & soul will all be on the same page before you know it!

Oh no! Food Stage Confusion!
carol285 replied to SolracSpree's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Every pre op & post op diet seems different so you will probably get enough opinions to make your head explode LOL!! My surgeon had no pre op diet other them clear liquids for the 24 hrs prior to operation. As for post up I had to eat either some cottage cheese or tuna salad & cranberrie sauce before leaving the hospital, mushies for 4 weeks & then onto solids. -
Going on vacation....need help!

GNC makes a pretty good protein pudding, they are already made & in cans with pop tops so quite easy to travel with. -

Ahhhh memories! When I had my surgery I didn't go back on solids until 4 days after Thanksgiving! -
How do you handle different scales?
carol285 replied to aviva1979's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I tend to think all scales are accurate to themselves so no need to pick one to follow. You can use the one at home to be your guide on how your weight loss is coming because whatever # it says if it is going down you are losing. Your surgeon of course will use his for your records with his/her office. I have rarely seen scales be the same especially when you factor in time of day you are weighing can vary your weight also. -
Weight loss Clinic Orientation...Disappointment

I did all the pre op tests needed during the 6 month supervised diet with my Primary Care Doctor. I finished all that within 4 months they submitted all & I was approved!! So you never know
