    January Bandsters???

I had my surgery on Monday and went to work on Thursday. I would say that I was 50-60%. I was sore and it was a little hard to concentrate. I'm 53 so maybe your age will work for you. At least you will be motivated to get moving. That I think helps you recover the best. Good Luck

    January Bandsters???

Had first fill this morning. Feels real tight now. I ate pretty freely over the weekend and during the superbowl so it's back to it. The procedure was done under flouroscope and did not hurt a bit. The anxiety of the needle was worse than the actual fill. It only took about 5 minutes and I was on my way back to work. Dr. says I'm right on target for weight loss. I also quit losing for the last two weeks after I went back to solid foods. Dr. says that is normal. He also said that this fill should last about 2 months, but if I'm still losing and still get that full feeling when I eat I could put it off till I level off.

    First Fill

2/06/07 Had first fill this morning. Under flourosope he did it all in about 5 minutes. No pain. I felt it tighten up though and when I drank the barium I could tell it was alot different than before. Several hours after the procedure I can fill that it is alot tighter than before. On liquids for two days then back to soft etc.

Starting into week 3 post op No problems making a transition from liquids to semi-solids. Able to take thick soups and even tuna and chilli. I can feel full after about 6oz. of food. I get a feeling like I'm going to have the pain I had from gulping air. That's enough to make me shut the eating down. That stays for about an hour and if that is the new full feeling then this should be easy. I've done great on keeping caffeine out and not drinking after a meal, although I forget sometimes. Lower tract is finally firmed up now that I'm getting something other than tea, water and the protien shake. With the current weight loss my productivity is way up and I'm feeling great now that I can eat an egg or thick soup. My wife is glad too. I've been pretty miserable watching them eat and my mood has not been very good. First fill scheduled for Feb.6th. They adjust the fill using a flouroscope so they can get it right.

Is it supposed to hurt this much?

I was banded on Jan 8th. I had the worst time learning to sip not gulp my water. Gulping air makes the gas thing even worse. You do it without thinking. My doctor suggested I use a ducolax supposistory as it gets the intestines to move in the right direction rather than having the spasims you are feeling now. Gax X did not work but the suspository did pretty good. Hope this works.

Yesterday I must have gulped my protein shake at breakfast and got too much air. Terrible stomach ache all day. Had bout of gagging and dry heaves but nothing came up. Finally went home from work and took the pain medicine with codine and went to sleep for an hour and woke up better. Changing the way I swallow liquids is harder than I thought. I know it will be better but right now it is hard to see the light.

    Post op followup

1/18/07 Had my 9day post op followup. I've lost 16 pounds since the surgery. All wounds are nearly healed. Dr. says stay with the liquids per the plan. I told him I could not get more than 60 grams of protein because the shakes are aweful. He said that would work. Otherwise I am now scheduling my first fill around the middle of February. Only pain is at port site when I make a pull motion like a situp or lateral twist. Pill issue has also resolved. I take the plavix and some of the other bad tasting stuff with apple sauce. The others I just quarter.

Anyone see Bob Greene on Oprah yesterday?

Don't beat yourself up too much. We all have done diets and lost lots of weight over and over again. The reality of this comes down to a few basic facts: 1. We are compelled to eat. And eat a lot when we do. We really like food and like to cook etc. 2. We are not millionaires like Oprah and can't have a personal chef and trainer. 3. We can't go to the gym for 3 hrs a day. Twice a day.(Thats what I found while spending almost that amount of time there.) I ran a marathon to lose weight at 48 then injured myself just to gain it all back. 4. We are not rich to have a personal driver drive us past the fast food line. I'm appalled at the T.V people acting like it is some sort of personal flaw why we can't lose weight. I mean look at Oprah, she have yo-yo'd forever. They don't have the issues we have and we don't have acess to the Real Resources they have. The band is a tool to change the way we eat and correct our eating habits. Think about it. Eat smaller portions, take your time, chew your food well. These all work to achieve fullness and satisfaction. Result lower calorie intake. Hopefully we will feel so good we will get active and lose even more. Sorry I'm going off the deep end, but I just had this done last week and I don't have one regret. I've tried it all and if this does not work then I will have to deal with a greatly shortened life span. I hope this sheds some light of reality for you. Really ask yourself how hard have you tried. If you have really tried and tried then the band probably will work. Good Luck with your decision.

thanks. I've been mixing about 1/2 & 1/1 slim fast high protein with a high protein powder(they want me to get 100 grams a day of protein). I also add ice but I really have a problem swallowing enough of it. I see the dr. tomorrow so I hope he cuts me some slack. Thanks again for all your comments.

The protein shakes are aweful. I'm trying to gag down 80 grams of protein a day on a clear liquid diet. Learned to sip liquids now so I don't get sick with swallowing too much air. Fluid intake is great and instead of crushing the pills I split them into quarters and just swallow them. Capsules I have to sprinke on jello but that one does not taste as bad. I think it is the after taste of the shake that depresses me. I can't get rid of it. I go to the dr. day after tomorrow and I will hopefully get some ideas and relief. I'm not starving but from my choices in the plan I'm just not up to any of it. All of the incisions are healing great. Only have slight pull on the port incision when I try to pull myself straight up out of bed. I still need to swing legs out over the side and push my self up from the side to avoid the burning pain at that site. Otherwise I feel good. Getting alot done around the house on this holiday weekend. Back to work tomorrow. Down to 247 this morning. Amazing how starvation works.

Just try to limit the amout per hour to about 6-8oz. Since I started keeping the volume per hour down I've been just fine. Good Luck.

    3 days post op- Question

I'm one week out from banding and as I got to feeling better started pushing fluids and the shakes. Next thing I know I have the bloat and the pain and nausea. I even gagged a couple of times and could not get anything to come up. I called the dr. and they said I was gulping large amounts of air and not sipping and to slow down to no more than 6oz/hr. Go figure...they want you to get 100 grams of protein a day and 64oz of liquid. Not much time to do anything else. Since I started slowing down and sipping I have not had another episode. Just stop everything it took me about 12 hours to settle down and get back to just clear liquids like water. Then I eased back up. Watch the shakes they might be just too much this early.

Yesterday started out great. Tried to up my protein intake and water and ended up sicker than heck. Terrible stomach pain and nausea. Called nurse and she figured I was gulping down too much air. Back to clear liquids and forget the shakes for a day or so. Just getting back to normal this morning. Keeping water down ok but I can tell I'm not quite there yet. I hope this never happens again.

    4 days post op

Getting better each day. Protein shakes are a drag and the crushed pills are almost too much. But I feel almost back to my old self and other than the catch pains and pulls my stomach seems to be getting back to normal. I know I am not supposed to weigh often but I did get on the scale and I'm down to 250.

Went to work, I'm a little slow moving, but here none the less! Still sore. Made a big mistake yesterday at lunch. My wife thought the tortilla soup at El Pollo Loco would be good. It tasted great but oh what a mistake. The fat or something in the broth really jacked with me and I was miserable with bloating and nausea till 10pm last night. Protein shake this morning went down ok. I'm mixing a high protein powder with about 4oz of slim fast high protein. Dr. wants me to get 100grams a day while on the liquids. Weight at pre op visit 268 Today:253 I enjoy the comments and thanks for listening.

    1/9/07 Home after baning

Went really well. Just sore as hell when I get up or down. Dull pain in upper left shoulder. Crushed meds are awful. Planning to go back to work day after tomorrow. Used ducalax suppositories to get bowels working. Helped gas pains alot.
