How is weight loss for people over 50?
Oregondaisy replied to debi717's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Sunshine, I really hate it when I throw up my pills. I usually do if I try to take them the day after a fill. I finally learned to take them with warm water, very slowly. I take one, and drink a lot of warm water, and wait awhile before taking another one. The warm liquids is supposed to open the band. I think as long as you are not experiencing any kind of heart burn, you'll be okay. The band should loosen up because you will lose fat around your stomach. When you try mushies again, you could try warm very thinned down oatmeal. Make sure it's very watery oatmeal. Thin it down with milk and then microwave it so it's nice and warm. Then go at it very slowly. Take a bite and wait awhile. I usually use the weight control oat meal and only dump in half a package. -

Thank you! It's been 20 years but it definitely was a shock at the time. It sounds like you went through an awful lot too. -

That's good news Sunshine. It sounds like it's beginning to loosen. I had a great weight loss during my time of being overfilled. I had some taken out, then waited a month. I was still pbing almost every day so I had more taken out. I haven't lost anything since then, and I have a fill on Wed. I probably should have just stayed on liquids or soups till it loosened, but I was really tired of throwing up. That's good that you're researching erosion and slippage. I am sure it happens when you're too tight for too long. Like I said, there was a thread here called "I have to sleep sitting up" The lady was too tight for about 6 months. That is not good. I slept sitting up for one weekend and it was enough. -
Thanks Laurend!

Mine started falling out after 4 months and here it is a year later and it's still falling out. I can't figure out why. It never fell out when I had any other surgery, or lost 90 lbs on the Atkins diet. It did fall out when my husband had an accident and was killed instantly. I think it falls out from a shock to the body. So maybe this surgery was a shock to my body. -

Sunshine, I had my overfill on a friday and went in Monday to have some taken out. It was really scary to have that water come up and drown me while I was sleeping. I don't know how long it would take for erosion to take place. -

Congratulations Phyl! That is great news. The danger of being too tight for too long is definitely erosion and band slippage. I would think though that you would be having a lot of heartburn before that happened. My problem when I was too tight, was that when I would lay down to go to bed, after I feel asleep, water would come gushing up into my mouth. It was awful. I have read on here where people are sleeping sitting up. It doesn't sound like any of that is happening to you Miss Sunshine. If your band gets looser and saves you a trip to Mexico, that would be great. The band does loosen as the fat melts away from the stomach area. -
okay, Laurend, I copied and pasted the link onto the email and told my daughter to copy and past it and put it into the address bar. I told her that was what I wanted for Christmas. Which one were you talking about? The last one on the last page? They are all pretty great!

Laurend, I guess I am going to have to break down and learn to make a link. I want to send that website to my daughter so I can get one of those sweatshirts for Christmas. I tried to copy and paste what you wrote into the email, but then when I clicked on it, Teach me how! Please? it didn't work and bring me to the website like yours did

I love chocolate so for me it's just like drinking chocolate milk. I really enjoy them and I hate cooking so it works out well for me. I do enjoy my Protein bars too. -

I hate to say this, but I would gain weight if I ate that much. I hate my slow metabolism! For lunch I have a slice of deli ham with a little bit of low fat cream cheese spread on it. -

The thing that really pisses me off is when I get credit card offers for my husband that has been dead for over 20 years. He got one today for zero % on balance transfers. It's pretty hard to rack up a balance when you're dead! -

I totally disagree with no liquid calories. My doctor insists that everyone have at least one Protein drink per day because most people are not getting enough protein. I personally like to drink them because then I am positive of exactly how many calories per day I am getting. I figure I lost 22 lbs the first 4 weeks after surgery, on Protein drinks. When my weight loss stalls, I go back to 3-4 protein drinks per day plus 64 oz of Water and it always gets my weight loss going again. -
Welcome to the Christmas haters club, Edie. I have a lot of grinches. My kids buy them for me because I hate Christmas so much! I have a Bah Humbug sweatshirt that is my favorite sweatshirt and I am mad that it's too big now. When I bought it, I couldn't even get it on. I was so happy when I lost enough weight to wear it. I wish I could find another one. My grinch sweatshirt is getting too big too.

How the Lap-Band actually works, fills and refills
Oregondaisy replied to Wendell Edwards's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
You might want to stay on Protein drinks for a couple of days to see if it will lossen up a bit. Do you have Protein powder that you can mix with water? When I was tight like that, even low carb slim fast made me slime. I had to drink the Protein Drinks that I made with powder and mix with water so they were thin. I ended up losing 8 lbs in a week. It was great, but I finally did have to go in and have a bit taken out because I didn't want to live on protein drinks. I couldn't even have Soup without sliming. -

When I say I am going carb free, it's not totally carb free. There are still carbs in veggies. I have been off and on the Atkins and South Beach diet for years, so I know exactly which carbs I can have and still lose weight. I do eat good carbs, but not that many of them when I am in this mode. I know it will get my weight loss going again, when I am on a plateau. It's just a matter of getting myself to do it. I have to pretty much stay home because when I am around other people eating, I want what they are having. It's a big problem. It seems like all of my socializing revolves around food. -

NM Sunshine, I think you are too tight. I had that pain when I was too tight. If this goes on for too many days, you're going to need to get a little bit taken out. If you are still having pain even with liquids, you are definitely too tight. -

Mine is still falling out. It has slowed down, but it's still coming out. I do finally see little hairs growing in. It would be nice to know what causes this. I didn't lose any hair with my C section and my appendix out and I had anesthesia then. -

What is up with his face? He looks as bad as Kenny Rogers. They have all that money, they can afford a decent plastic surgeon. -
I just meant that if you eat a lot of carbs, your weight loss will slow down. Most people that post on this board have agreed that when they eat a lot of carbs, they have a harder time losing. If you can eat a lot of carbs and still lose weight, you are lucky. I am not talking about fruits and veggies. I am talking about things like mashed potatoes.

Yay! Another Christmas hater! Everyone keeps telling me that I will love Christmas now that my daughter is pregnant. "It will be so nice to have a child in the family because Christmas is all about children." Well I say Bah Humbug to that. I will love my grandchild so much but it will still be one more person I have to shop for. I hate shopping!

It is frustrating to be a slow loser, but I know darn good and well when I sabotage myself. I have a slow metabolism and I can lose slowly if I exercise and eat right. I can not lose anything and just maintain if I eat any sugar.

All I can say is I am glad my surgeon is 5 min. from my house. I know that a lot of people have had wonderful experiences with doctors and surgeries in Mexico, but I feel really lucky that I don't have to research a doctor out of the country. Thank goodness WasA has done so much research and is so helpful to people who aren't as lucky as me to have their surgeon down the street.
