HI, I'm new and trying to find my way around
Oregondaisy replied to lamsunshine's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Welcome to vertical sleeve talk. Be sure to ask us anything you need information on. We are all glad to help. -
I lost half my hair. it's growing back in , but the thing that bothers me is that I am still losing it. I am wondering if having gall bladder surgery started the hair loss over again.

Restruant Discount cards
Oregondaisy replied to cwalker's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I use it sometimes when I want to order off the senior menu. Tiffy's right, The children's menu does not have healthy choices on it. The senior menu does have smaller portions of the other things on the menu. Most of the time I can order from it because I am 57 and a lot of them let you order from it if you are 55 . The ones I will use the card at are the ones that want you to be 62 or 65. For the most part though, I order off the regular menu because I like left overs for lunch. -
Congratulations! The best is yet to come! You will keep losing and get to exactly where you want to be. I am past a year and was surprised on the scale today that I lost another lb. I honestly everything and anything I want.

I have occasionally taken a pepsid OTC the chewable kind. I do take Tagment before dinner if I feel like what I am eating is going to cause heartburn. This is how my PCP suggested I wean down. I rarely take either of those, other than a little swig of occasionally gavescon though.

What do YOU eat in a typical day?
Oregondaisy replied to JillianMarie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Drink up until 30 minutes before you eat or at least 15 minutes before you eat . Wait at least 30 min after you eat, but 45 would be better. You should notice a difference. When I am with people who don't know I am sleeved, I will sip some water while eating, and I can eat way more food than when I don't. -

I know there is a difference of opinion on this subject, but most doctors say no carbonation because it will stretch out the sleeve. -
Straws? Can anyone shed some light for me?

I wish I had a Sonic here! There is one by my house in Arizona but I have never seen one in Oregon. -

Breakfast protein shake lunch 6oz Greek yogurt dinner 1/2 cheese burger snack sf pudding -
have you read the thread I started on Dr. Aceves' credentials in the doctor area of the forum? Dr. Aceves teaches other doctors to do the sleeve. Dr. Criangle and Jossart in SF are both great sleeve surgeons but quite a bit more expensive I would not hesitate to recommend him. I did a lot of research on him and could not find one negative thing about him.

Someone asked for the list that Dr. Aceves sends out to his patients. It's posted in a thread in questions and answers, but I thought I'd put it here too: Okay, this list is what Dr. Aceves' office sends out. Other doctors may have other suggestions. Suggested items to bring to the hospital: Some items you may want to consider taking to the hospital with you: Pajamas, the nurses and doctors will be checking your incisions so you might be more comfortable in your own pajamas than the hospital gowns, however, hospital gowns are provided if you prefer. Non skid slippers, thongs, or slip on shoes of some sort. The hospital floors are very clean and waxed, so you'll want non-skid. It will be sore to bend over so you won't want to tie shoe laces so slip on shoes are easier. A favorite robe, many times it is comforting to have a favorite robe. Computer - if you have a laptop you are welcome to bring it. The hospital and hotel are set up with wireless internet connection. Any of Dr. Aceves' staff can give you the password at the hospital. You do not need a password in the hotel. Cell phone - Most cell phones work well in the hospital, if your phone does not work most of the staff will loan you their phone. The electrical system is the same in Mexico as the US so you do not need a converter for your hair dryer, computer, or cell phone charger. Shampoo - this is provided by the hospital but many prefer their own brands so they prefer to bring their own. Book or other reading material. You will not likely feel like reading the day of surgery but you might the day after surgery. Loose fitting clothing to wear coming home. You will likely feel a bit bloated after surgery so bring a sweat suit or something very loose fitting and comfortable for your ride home from the hospital. I do not suggest bringing much cash with you. Unless you want to do a little shopping the day before your surgery there is no need for much cash. You will want to purchase dinner the night before surgery and $25.00 per person will cover that easily, less for most restaurants. If you want to have access to cash then credit cards are a safer alternative. You will not need to convert US dollars to pesos, you can use US dollars for your companion in the hospital cafeteria and all businesses around Mexicali if you choose to do a little shopping. Good luck to you on your upcoming surgery! Grocery list for post op diet: Just as a suggestion you might want to do a bit of grocery shopping before you have surgery so that when you come home you will not need to go to the store, you will be able to rest and relax. Some ideas are: broth, chicken, Beef, Vegetable, or they have new products out (new to me) that are Chinese Soup broths in a carton that you simply heat. It would give you a bit of variety. Popsicles that are Water based, sugar free, and a variety of flavors. Ramon Noodles. While the noodles are not acceptable during the clear phase of the post op diet there is a packet of dry broth mix that many seem to like, it has a bit more kick than regular broth, I am told. Propel water, you can purchase this as bottled water or you can purchase individual packets of this product and put it in water and mix. The reason this product is good is because many are used to a high carbohydrate diet and when your body is used to many carbs, especially white carbs such as flour, Pasta, rice, potatoes, sugar; your pancreas tends to put out a bit too much insulin because of the carb load. When you remove carbs from your diet it can potentially be a drastic change and your pancreas is still putting out a bit too much insulin during the post op diet. This can cause low blood sugar, your stomach might feel nauseated, you might begin to perspire, feel like you are trembling. This does not happen to everyone but it does seem to happen more to older folks or those used to very high white carb diets. Propel water has a very small amount of sugar in it. Just enough to bring your blood sugar up but not enough to cause large blood sugar spikes. Sugar Free Gatorade, it is a new product that is low carb but it has some electrolytes that are beneficial during the post op stage. Water, you need to get about 64oz of fluids in daily. Your broth and Popsicles count toward your 64oz of fluids daily. The key is to sip, sip, sip all day long. The first few days you may find that you cannot get your full 64oz of fluids in, try as hard as you can. You do not want to become dehydrated. If you enjoy tap water that is fine, if you don't then perhaps try bottled water and see if that goes down. Crystal Lite, Sugar Free Hawaiian Punch, pretty much any sugar free water flavorings are fine during the post op diet. Protein products, during days 1-5 you'll need a clear protein product such as Isopure clear bottled protein liquid or unjury. You can find Isopure at General Nutrition Stores or a variety of Health food stores. Unjury must be ordered on line in advance of your surgery, /smallwww.unjury.com. They have an unflavored product that is nice because when you are done with clears it is versatile and you can add it to Jello, cooking, smoothies, etc. Please note, this is a whey protein product. All whey protein products have one issue in common and that is that they don't heat easily. If you add any whey protein product to a hot liquid it will clump. The key is to add it to a cold liquid and heat slowly, then it will not turn into lumps. A good source of protein products after the clear liquid phase (you can use these with water instead of milk starting day #5, and with milk starting day #11) can be purchased reasonably at: www.netrition.com Some excellent products are: Matrix 5.0 by Syntrax [Syntrax Matrix 5.0 Protein powder The more popular flavors are chocolate and Cookies & Cream. You can spice up the Chocolate with Da Vinci Sugar Free Syrups: Netrition's Da Vinci Prices Another very popular protein product if you like Chocolate and Peanut Butter is Whey Gourmet, Choco/Peanut butter: PVL Whey Gourmet I suggest the above because you'll need to consume about 60-80gms of protein after surgery. During the post op diet this can be difficult to do. Adding protein supplements can make this much easier. You'll want to track your protein intake in the beginning and a few free, on line sites you can do that are: www.thedailyplate.com www.sparkpeople.com www.fitday.com Just see which format you prefer of the above. The Daily Plate has a weight graph, daily you put your weight in and it is satisfying to see the numbers go down!

Pre Op shopping list & Protein Powders
Oregondaisy replied to Oregondaisy's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I took gum too cause the first 24 hours there is nothing by mouth not even ice chips. The IV is supposed to take care of it all, but I was so thirsty. I chewed the gum and it helped but I got in trouble cause Dr. Campos was afraid I would swallow it. I knew I wouldn't and I promised him I would not swallow it. -
Afraid of changes after surgery
Oregondaisy replied to 4romatl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Believe me, if you eat past the point your sleeve likes, it will come back up. You have no choice. It has nowhere to go so it comes up. It's not like throwing up like you have the stomach flu. It's just the last food you ate, and out it pops. Really, I don't mind the amount of food I can eat. I eat my one piece of pizza and I don't want to eat more because I am full. I look at my kids polish off 4 more pieces and I wonder where they put it. The other day at at the mall, I was craving a cheese burger. I ordered a single cheeseburger from Wendys. Not the kiddie one, a regular one. I ate until I was full and it did not bother me one single bit to toss the rest in the trash. Today I ate a huge salad. Salad is one thing I can really pack away. I guess that's because lettuce chews down to nothing. -
sorry there was a double post for some reason
-
Mary, I don't have the gurgling or burping so I don't know. I take a sip of gavescon when I get the heartburn. I would call and ask the dr. if I were you. I am doing much better off the PPI. I would have to go back and check previous posts to remember exactly when I stopped it, but my body is adjusting.

Let's get this singles forum going!
Oregondaisy replied to Oregondaisy's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Oh yeah, plenty of fish is lots of fun. I am now writing to 3 different guys. It really sucks that I went through so many years being fat. It's been lots of fun dating, but I wish I had done this years ago. Another good site I like is singlesnet. I like that one because only one person has to pay. So if you find a guy who has paid, you can write to him. -
What are your slider- and non slider- foods?
Oregondaisy replied to JillianMarie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am not sure. We aren't supposed to dump with the sleeve but I called Dr. Aceves office the first time it happened and they said that because our stomachs are so small, the sugar and fat get into our blood stream much quicker and that's what causes it. It sounds like that food just didn't agree with you. anytime I have done it, the diarrhea follows. -
Gavescon is over the counter. It's a liquid but it does come in chewables. The cherry are way better than the mint. Since you are newly sleeved, you should be on an acid blocker not an acid reducer. Ask your doctor for a prescription of the generic for protonix. It's really cheap and it makes your body completely stop making acid. The down side is you're only supposed to be on it for 6 months and weaning off of it is not as easy as I thought it would be. Your body needs acid to absorb calcium so that is why I am getting off of it. My calcium levels are really low, even though I have been taking calcium citrate for years.

Afraid of changes after surgery
Oregondaisy replied to 4romatl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Really, I can eat anything I want. I can eat rice if that's what I choose to eat. I can eat pita bread which is sort of what I think you're talking about. I just can't eat all that much of these things. Once you're sleeved, you get full fast. I choose not to eat those things because there are other things I like better. -
For those who has successfully made it..?
Oregondaisy replied to Dalal's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
I'd love to have my arms done too. I can't wear short sleeves at all. I am worried about the scars though. -
What are your slider- and non slider- foods?
Oregondaisy replied to JillianMarie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know some people say you don't dump with the sleeve but I definitely do. When I was on vacation in Arizona, I ate at the cheesecake factory. I had never been there before. I had a very rich dessert and it went down just fine. Then I was dizzy and sick. I had to sit on a comfy chair in the mall while the room spinned and I was in a cold sweat. I was so nauseous I had to sit there for an hour before I had to search out the bathroom. OK this is TMI but after that, I had horrible diarrhea in every bathroom in every anchor store in that mall. I finally took some immodium. I have dumped before, but not in a long time. It seems to happen with high sugar combined with high fat foods. The sick thing about this is I knew this would probably happen, but I wanted that dessert so bad I was willing to take that chance. Talk about being a food addict! -
Tums can cause rebound acid. Dr. Aceves recommends Gavescon. I take a little sip and it's gone instantly. he says it's the only one that won't cause rebound acid. My Pcp wants me to take a Tagamet before dinner if I am going to eat anything that I think will cause acid. I am doing well off my PPI now. I don't feel hungry or have a stomach ache anymore. I think my body is finally getting used to not having the acid blocked.

Oregondaisy replied to BlackBerryJuice's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
i was so bored in my hospital room that I took long walks every day in my bathrobe. I walked for blocks all around the hospital. There was no time what so ever that I felt unsafe. I spent the entire day walking around the neighborhoods around the hospital. -
(some pics)proof you have to lift weights!
Oregondaisy replied to ryansgirl's topic in Fitness & Exercise
I've been using weights and all sorts of different routines on my arms with weights. I can see the muscle while doing the exercise, but when I am done, all I see is hanging skin. It's so ugly and I can't wear short sleeves at all. I have been doing weight routines for over 6 years. My thighs are great but you would never know that I do so much exercise with weights on my arms.
