    Hibernation Syndrome

I am only 10 days out here so I am not sure what is to come. I do know that I was so sure about this operation I did not once have any buyers remorse I hear of that folks experience in the days right after. I am just so excited and thrilled to have this tool I sought all of my 47 years. I have been stuck in this go forward and it will all be good mode since Jan of this year. I took off 50 pounds pre op and never even thought to "eat it up" before the surgery because soon I wont be able to. My thoughts were the more I can take off now, the less I have to take off after the surgery. Now if this is all temporary and I get depressed, well you wonderful folks are the very folks I will turn to, as you all great folks and no one who has not gone through this would never understand. So for any of you struggling with this depression I would like to be the first to say, We are here for you!

    Chickening Out

I just had mine 10 days ago and I had some of the very same concerns. I even had an abnormal EKG, that latter turned out was fine. They do a ton of tests to rule out complications. I think if you were to compare the risks of surgery vs staying overweight you find the latter to be higher risk to yourself. If you stay heavy you take time off your live, time of the quality of life with your child, not to mention it is better to raise your child with a positive role model at a good weight in addition to showing healthy eating. In the end after you pray and truly weigh your personal circumstances can you come up with the right move for YOU. I do not suggest giving in to fear however, logical thinking with brutel honesty with yourself is the only way to come up with your HONEST answer for you.
  4. 4 days out and I went to an auction last night, that was not the mistake I told myself I would stay as long as I was comfortable. I took a bottle of Gatorade with and finished that so my husband went to the snack counter and got me a room temp Water, I forgot for a moment about sipping and played into thirst and chugged the water:blink: I caught myself on the 3 gulp and then panic set in. I got up and walked toward the bathroom just in case, but nothing, nothing happened! I had one few seconds of air that had to come up that was a little uncomfortable, but other than that I was fine. I thought for sure after all my reading that I would either have spontaneous water flowing up the wrong way or intense pain. I was so shaken by my lapse of memory I vowed to never leave the house without my little 2 ounce medicine cup again! The other thing I came across was other people eating. I had no physical hunger, but when my sister in law sat down with her potato chips I could not help but think how good one would taste, and then my brother in law bought nachos with cheese. Again, looked good, would have loved the texture in my mouth but after checking my stomach there was no hunger for them, so I guess that was my first case of head hunger thus far? Don't get me wrong I am too scared to even try pudding right now, so I would never had tried real food at this point, it was just a new feeling to sort out.

    Is Palin NUTS????

As a former lunch Mom I have to agree those federal meals are horrid and I would hope that is one thing that would be addressed. However I think the point here is there is a problem in America and people don't know what to eat to be healthy, otherwise we would not have the obesity rate we have in America. I think that anyone who wants to step forward and help America learn healthy eating be in Michelle Obama or Nobody from no where, more power to them. The answer to this problem is education. I don't think Michele is trying to dictate to anyone what they have to eat, I think she is taking on the very needed role of education America. What we do with the educating is up to us.

    Am I being too sensitve?

Tiff as always you are right, I will still go on vacation, just not there. What bothers me the most none of these people are hiding anonymously behind their computer. We have all met over the years and see each other at least once a year.

  8. That was the weirdest thing, there I was for WLS and at no time did they weigh me.
  9. Heck I think I am in a stall right out of the gate. 3 whole pounds the first week.
  10. Wow, 25 pounds in 2 weeks??? May I ask where you started at? I am one week post op and I have only lost 3 pounds and I am getting a little discouraged.
  11. Thank you all, it has already improved since posting, it is not gone but better.

    New iPhone App

Thanks, I will check it out. I got my surgical report today and it answers all the questions.
  13. Hi Kandi, I was sleeved on the same day as you. I am not sure what you mean by supplements, I was sent home on a full liquid diet. I can have juice, Jello (sf) creamed Soups strained, Water and other full liquids. I too have had some head hunger, like last night I seen subway sandwich on tv and I thought ohh that would be great to bite into, but then I checked my stomach, no hunger and I know I would have to chew the heck out of that one bite of sandwich just to get it to go down and know just from what it feels like when eating jello and Soup that it would not be comfortable. I just tell myself Oh well just think what this lack of food well look like on the scale! I am still amazed at how I have to remember to eat! If not for thirst I might forget all together. I find this all and incredible freedom and I know these early steps and not forever.
  14. I have bought them at Vita cost.com and at Walmart. GNC, Amazon and Vitamin Shoppe carries them as well. Walmart has the best price by far, they have really beefed up their offerings of Protein by the pharmacy.
  15. I seen this at the store and thought GREAT 18 gms of protein and electrolytes for the early days after surgery. YUCK alert, it tastes just like a whey protein shot and you have to drink a lot more of it to get just 18 grams of protein. I decided to write Gatorade and tell them if I am going to endure that taste it will be in the form of a protein shot, more concentrated and higher protein. I was surprised today to hear from them and they are sending me coupons for any other Gatorade product for letting them know. Nice surprise.

    New iPhone App

    What is the app called?
  17. Wow that is something, I have to pay for my short term disability. For Aflac they only need the employer to fill out a notice of disability as well as the surgeon.

    My turn Tomorrow

Congrats, I was in your place one week ago today! You both will do great!
  19. You have to do what is good for you. I too feared negativity but once I told my family and in law family they were all very supportive! I considered not telling them, but having surgery right before thanksgiving and still being the hospital I could not see not telling them as I would had to come up with some reason I was not there and then why I am blending my food at cmas and well I just felt like not telling was lying or would lead to lies. So I just bit the bullet and much to my surprise ALL have been very supportive.
  20. I put in pudding, in cream soups so far. From the texture I can tell when I am allowed to eat more things it will go well in yogurt.

    The drain

Here is what I found when searching drains: A surgical drain is a tube used to remove pus, blood or other fluids from a wound. Drains inserted after surgery do not result in faster wound healing or prevent infection but are sometimes necessary to drain body Fluid which may accumulate and in itself become a focus of infection. The routine use of drains for surgical procedures is diminishing as better radiological investigation and confidence in surgical technique have reduced their necessity. It is felt now that drains may hinder recovery by acting as an 'anchor' limiting mobility post surgery and the drain itself may allow infection into the wound. In certain situations their use is unavoidable. Drains have a tendency to become occluded or clogged, resulting in retained fluid that can contribute to infection or other complications. Thus efforts must be made to maintain and assess potency when they are in use. Once a drain becomes clogged or occluded, it is usually removed as it is no longer providing any benefit. Drains may be hooked to wall suction, a portable suction device, or they may be left to drain naturally. Accurate recording of the volume of drainage as well as the contents is vital to ensure proper healing and monitor for excessive bleeding. Depending on the amount of drainage, a patient may have the drain in place one day to weeks. Signs of new infection or copious amounts of drainage should be reported to the health care provider immediately. Drains will have protective dressings that will need to be changed daily/as needed. I was confused by it as my daughter had RNY and come home with no drain. I have had two in life now, once after gallbladder and now after the sleeve. I am still toting it around here I can not concentrate on it much, it is just there. I asked the nurse why my daughter did not have one and why I did and she said the group I go to ALWAYS uses a drain. So it much be preference. The one doctor that came i asked to see it and made the comment that it was "nice healthy fluid" . I was like ok, but your definition of nice and mine are way different! I had my gallbladder out the old way and I had a HUGE drain in and it did NOT hurt removing it, left me feeling a little light headed but no pain.

    Living Will

I filled one out as to my wishes about life support should I not recover to the point of functional life. My husband got mad at me and did not want me to turn it in as he thought I should just tell him what I want. I just went through watching my Dad die and I knew his wishes, he made them loud and clear but never put anything on paper so he ended up on life support and I knew he did not want that if he would not recover to be able to care for himself. It was a long road watching him decline on support and finally other family members let go. In the face of greif you can not trust loved to think logically, you need to speak for yourself, and think of it this way, this is not just for your surgery but for every day of your life. I think we have more chances of being in a bad car accident then dying from our procedure. Everything will be ok.
