I have been overweight all my life. I had to lose weight in order to join the Air Force and struggled my entire 6 year career in order to stay within their weight standards. After getting out of the military, I was gaining about 5 lbs a year and I knew my weight would only continue to go up. So, I decided to be proactive about my health and not wait until I was "morbidly obese", or until I exhibited the co-morbid conditions that I knew were just around the corner. I made the decision to have the surgery and paid for it with a loan from my 401k at 1% interest over 5 years.
