My gastric sleeve surgery date is 12/19/23 and would love to connect with others having surgery in December so that we can support each other on this journey. 😊

    Yoga for seniors

I'd look into yin yoga or restorative yoga for starters (yin is a little more active, but not much). Both are easy on the joints, and you'll find a lot of older people or people with mobility issues in those classes (although good idea to start with YouTube videos just to see if you like them). I did yoga for years - starting even before I had surgery (in fact, I spent a month in India on a yoga trip) - have been away from it for awhile but really should go back, esp now that I'm getting older and really need the stretching. But yes - I'd start with yin or restorative. P.S. this article explains the difference between the two, but either would be a good starting place (and you may just stick with these styles for life - I personally would struggle with the more athletic styles of yoga at this point (I'm in my 60s with joint issues and osteoporosis), so I will also stick with these if/when I go back to doing yoga). https://www.yogarenewteachertraining.com/the-difference-between-yin-and-restorative-yoga

    I’m feeling so unprepared!!

Thank you, sadly most of my visits have been virtual because I live so far away from my dr office, so samples are not given 😒 hopefully post op they will give me some. I will check out the syntrx line as I have seen others. Most of the “name” drinks have been suggested not required. It was also suggested that I get unflavored protein powder since tastes change and it is the best to mix with just water or flavored water to get my protein in. I am actually sitting here getting my stuff ordered as I write this. I am a bit closer but I think I will feel better once I get my vitamins and drink in the house thank you for the help

    Stool Tests?

I've done them for parasite testing, cancer tests, and bacteria testing, but for surgery they weren't required. I did do a breath test for H. Pylori though, which could be what they are looking for. It weirds me out to do the stool tests but I'll tell you how I do it. I fill out the bottle labels. Open a trash bag and put it in the sink with the sides up the edges of the sink. Once I've used the bathroom in the plastic thing I nestle it inside the trash bag. Do the gloves and take the sample thing. Toss everything else into the bag, shuck the gloves, pull the bag sides up and viola, everything is disposed of!! I might have had to do these a lot for a GI condition I used to have that involved GI bleeding.... There is always a method to my madness.

I don't know what surgery you had, that kind of impacts the answer. If you had a DS I'd steer WAY clear, the carbs in the corn portion will send you running to the bathroom. My nutritionist told all of us regardless of surgery to avoid anything dense and chewy for 6 months as it will ball up inside your tummy and sit like a lump. I'd be especially cautious of this if you had the Gastric Bypass. If you had one of the other surgeries you may be able to eat the meat portion. But I'd caution you to consider the spices. I'm 4 weeks out and if I have anything Mexican with sauce, or spices, or any tomato based sauce other than ketchup, I end up in agony for hours...and then in the bathroom. My healing tummy has decided those things are still just too strong. I can weirdly handle sriracha just fine and have no clue why, but other than that, nope.

I noticed I was gritting my teeth a lot. I think part of it was caffeine, part was stress, but part of it was missing chewing things! Sugar free popsicles helped a lot in the evening with this... My TMJ specialist taught me this trick of holding the tip of your tongue between your teeth. Not biting down on it, but just resting it there on the edge. Mine usually rests there by resting against the back of my top teeth. Over time it breaks the habit of clenching because your tongue is in the way and it is also a nice neutral position for your mouth to rest in...

    sick after eating

Learning to eat slowly can be challenging. Over time you can speed up again or find you’re subconsciously timing your bites with whoever you’re eating with. I found putting my cutlery down & sitting back from the table helped. I still take a long time to eat - 30-45 mins to eat a meal though it used to be longer - up to an hour. The slowing your eating is also to ensure you haven’t eaten too much before you recognise your full signal. This signal can take 20+ minutes to kick in so if you eat quickly you can eat more than you actually need & are then are over full. I often have a very slow full message which is also why I eat slowly. I also can’t drink more than two mouthfuls at a time. I was having trouble swallowing a med for my Meniere’s vertigo one day. It starts to dissolve when it gets moist & even just putting it in your mouth it will stick. Took a 4th swallow to get it down & then I swear within seconds up all the water came … & the med.
