    Should We End Obesity?

In 1956, I might follow these guidelines to eat like this: Breakfast: 1 bowl oatmeal, 1 glass milk, 1 serving berries Lunch: A sandwich consisting of 2 slices bread, a serving of sliced meat, and a slice of cheese, plus an apple Dinner: A serving of meat, a potato, and a green vegetable, plus a dinner roll with a little bit of butter But you get to the 1980s and we're being told that's not nearly enough food. Eat more and be healthy!

    November 2023 surgery buddies

Congratulations To those that are now post op. Our journey to a new quality of life has began. hoping you are all recovering nicely. 16 days post op and I’m still on liquids. I’ve lost a total of 5 kgs already. I’m struggling to meet the intake of daily protein and fluids. I’m never hungry. I don’t see my surgeon again till 21st Dec.

    Social media

I had my surgery when the internet was young. There were perhaps 2 or 3 main WLS message boards not unlike bariatric-pal, along with several 'blogging' sites where a few folks detailed their experiences, generally in text. I kept a journal form history from the moment I decided to have surgery until about 2 years post-op, which included appointments, milestones, and stuff I found interesting, then the next year was my running journal in much the same form. Though I wrote my entries in a form that was to be read, I never really intended to share them publicly, though eventually I did just that anonymously out there on the internet somewhere. My only caution is to remind you the internet is forever. There may come a day when you'd like to allow your WLS and weight issues to fade into the past. Be sure you don't reveal too much. Good luck, Tek

    Surgery on Monday

My surgery is on Monday. I’ve started the clear liquid diet. I’m a little bit nervous because I’m high risk due to heart and kidney issues. But I’m excited.

    It's OFFICIAL

I am officially in the pre-operative bariatric program through Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic! I met with the surgeon yesterday and we determined that it was better to do the bariatric surgery before the ventral hernia repair. She set a pre-surgery goal weight of 264 and we will decide on the type of procedure (sleeve or bypass) in January. Surgery will be in April or May. I've already made my first nutritionist, lab and psychologist appointments, with the dietician being the first one next Friday, the day after Thanksgiving! I'm motivated and ready to change my life and it finally feels like I will have to tools to do it.

    Surgery on Monday

Thank you. I know the doctor has said I may spend the night in ICU after surgery so I can be closely monitored but he is willing to do the surgery. I have kidney disease and the anesthesia may put me in temporary kidney failure and I have a heart block that needs a pacemaker but cardiology wanted to wait till after this surgery since it was already scheduled when we discovered the heart block when my heart paused for 5 seconds (they think it was a side effect of one of my medications)

    Should We End Obesity?

I think it's partially the ingredients. The amount of added sugar has skyrocketed. Also portion sizes have become so large, and what we get in restaurants influences how much we serve ourselves at home. I found this great article that shows the USDA illustrated guidelines starting from the early 1900s. In 1956, people were told 2 servings milk, 2 servings meat/egg/beans, 4 servings of veg and fruit, and 4 servings of bread/cereal. I can picture those amounts in my head and it feels reasonable. By 1992, we were being told a minimum of 6 bread and 5 veg/fruit, with upper limits provided that would make it "okay" to have 11 bread, 9 veg/fruit, 3 milk, and 3 meat/bean. If you assume 3 meals per day and take the upper limits, just imagine having 3-4 bread/grains, plus 3 veg/fruits, plus 1 meat, and 1 milk for every meal, every single day! And the government experts are telling you that's a great idea!

Thank you!!!! Yes, luckily it's only about 10 pounds I need to lose and I'm hopeful that I'll be able to achieve it.

    Hungry a lot

some person on this site or a similar one (this was several years ago - I've been hanging out here for a. long time!) said that when he felt hungry, he'd ask himself if eating some chicken breast would do it for him. If yes, he was hungry. If no, then it was likely just head hunger or a craving.

    Dumping Syndrome

I'd like to test that study on Thanksgiving when I eat a piece of pumpkin or pecan pie . Would the butter or crisco in the crust be enough I wonder??? LOL More than likely I won't test on that day since I would be too worried of having to run to the bathroom every 5 minutes. I don't dump on fried stuff I found out but I ate a piece of birthday cake once and I lived in the bathroom for the rest of the night. I don't get nauseous or sick, just goes right thru me. I know..I know. TMI. But we are talking about dumping so.....
