6 years postop... the long haul.

sorry to hear you're dealing with this - but just to let others know, this isn't a very common experience.

    Emotional Trauma

WLS solves precisely two problems... being fat and (hopefully) associated health co-morbidities. The rest is work that you have to do. That said, being fat often makes us feel like crap for so many reasons. No longer being fat frees up a lot of energy and mental space to do that work. I have found that engaging in high quality therapy pre-op and during weight loss and maintenance has been very helpful in processing all of the changes and taking full advantage of the opportunities for transformation. I can't imagine going through this process without therapy as a space to process it all.

    6 month post surgery -

I’m wondering how everyone is tracking at their 6 month mark. I had my surgery May 3rd this year. My starting weight before pre surgery diet was 309. I’m at 233 as of today and hopefully I’ll get to 225 by 11/3 I was hoping to reach 200 by the end of the year but I don’t think it’s possible. My goal weight is 160.

    Emotional Trauma

I have begun to notice more confidence in myself when walking around at work and in public. A very nice feeling ☺️

anxiety - no. Thyroid - I'm not sure. It does have an impact on some of your hormones, but I'm not sure about thyroid. I'd check with the surgeon and see if he or she knows. well I take that back. I just googled it. Anxiety and depression can improve in some patients - but it depends on a lot of factors - social support, weight loss success, better health, etc. So I guess it partially would depend on the types of things that tend to set off your anxiety.

So... a little update... the daily recommended dose of biotin for adults is 30 mcg/day. I was consuming my regular multivitamin PLUS 10,000 mcg of bioton /day... 5,000 in the AM and 5,000 in the PM... when I stopped taking it, it took about 3 days to stop getting the hives, but I stopped getting the hives. As soon as I'm able, I will make an appointment with a dermatologist. However, I'm pretty sure it was the OVERDOSE of biotin. I was taking it because I'm afraid of the hair loss, but obviously, TEN THOUSAND micro-grams a day is just too much.

    Feeling discouraged

I think most of us had to have a sleep study to check for sleep apnea - that's a pretty common screening for this surgery. I can't remember if that was a requirement of my insurance or my bariatric clinic. I had it closer to the beginning of my journey, though.
