    Jan 2023 MGB Surgery.

Hi, I had surgery (Mini Gastric Bypass) in Jan 2023 and I am losing weight. Total weight loss is 50lb (in 23 weeks) . However most of this was lost in the early month and I have slowed to approximately 1lb per week, if that. The slower weight loss is fine, I can cope with this because its going in the right direction. What has be very anxious is that i find that I feel like i have no restriction and can eat anything. To maintain the weight-loss I need to tell myself not to eat. I am fighting with the 1lb weight loss each week to make sure its a deficit, terrified that it will go up. I don't feel like i have a tool. Are there any other MGB patients that can eat anything - bread, rice, chocolate, cereal, potatoes. I do suffer nausea if I don't eat sufficient protein but i am so worried that i have gone through surgery and i will spend the rest of my life 'dieting' with little help from my tool. Anyone else in the same position? Thanks Cals

I didn't really have any health issues, but I'm also a "senior" - there are lots of us on here who've had surgery in our 50s, 60s, and even a few in their 70s. not being able to exercise much shouldn't be an issue. Weight loss is 90% diet and 10% exercise (exercise has a greater effect during maintenance, though (once you reach your goal weight) - but then, you can only do what you can do. But for losing weight, no - it doesn't play a major role). I've "known" several people on bariatric forums who rarely if ever exercised, and they still lost a ton of weight.

    Bypass vs Sleeve

You had your surgery on the 7th? So not quite a week ago which is very early days. This is major surgery, so it can take a while for the pain to ease and we all heal at our own rate. I felt like I'd been hit by a bus for a good two weeks. Can't say if it would have been the same if I'd had a sleeve, but the Mini Gastric Bypass/ Omega Loop is a shorter operation than the RNY but still took me a while to recover.

    Sodium intake

My plan or Dietician never once mentioned sodium and I had high BP pre-surgery. But, you eat SO minimal and it's basically all protein especially this early post-op that your sodium intake is going to be super low regardless if you watch it or not. When you get further out, you could over due it especially with eating out. (If you do) With that being said, NOW i have LOW blood pressure, to the point it drops so low and quick that I have passed out a few times. I have learned to notice the signs and can usually rebound it before it gets that bad. But, now I have to watch and try to increase my sodium levels to help keep my BP stable. To the point I have licked salt off of my hand because there is nothing salty around. It is not as bad as I may have just made it sound, once we figured it out it balanced out and rarely happens. Also, there are meds to raise my BP if needed but since we got it stable I don't need meds. Sorry for my rant: My point is don't stress it, you aren't going to have a high enough sodium intake to retain water like that.

    Bariatric Surgery Doubts

I think doubts are normal, especially if we start focusing on all the possible complications. This is major surgery, it's a big deal, and we really shouldn't go into it lightly. Just remember, pretty much all the complications can be treated if caught in time. Though I have developed a couple of little complications myself, I have absolutely no regrets! I am no longer diabetic. My cholesterol is back to normal. My blood pressure is normal. I'm in the "overweight" category now. I can buy clothes off the rack, no special sizing needed. I have more energy. I'm developing a healthier relationship with food. I wouldn't change a thing.

    Revision

As @catwoman7 says, people who have a revision on this site seem to have lost weight. You have done well so far and are probably in a stall. Ride it out. Stay off the scales as much as possible. Your weight is on the lower scale so it will be slow going from here but you should get lower. People who have a virgin surgery can get to a lower weight but not all. It must be heaven to get rid of the GERD

What to expect at 3 months?

After my RNY gastric bypass surgery, I completely lost my hunger. This condition lasted for about a year and my hunger slowly returned. It was not as strong as before surgery. I am 4 years post op and sometimes I experience nausea. This occurs when I eat too much. Generally I recognize the pretriggers to dumping and I stop eating in order to avoid dumping. Assuming that you are not eating too much, perhaps you are experiencing a stricture. Sometimes strictures will resolve on their own. Anyways, this might be a subject to discuss with your surgeon and their staff.
