3 months post op and I'm done.

When I went to my 6 week post op consultation ,I happened to sit in close proximity to a woman who had also had the Gastric Sleeve .She thought she looked wonderful - I thought she looked terminally ill ."I'm nearly at my wedding weight " she said proudly .I smiled and said nothing .She was the opposite of how I wanted to look .Her hair was thin and lack lustre , her skin sagging and dull .I listened in horror as she explained she was still trying to lose weight .I thought she summed up the very look I never wanted to have .Her slimness did nothing to inspire me .So I am 3 months post op .I can now walk freely , breathe better ,and I fit into my favourite jeans .I am not at my ideal BMI but if I don't lose further weight ,I'll be content .I eat more healthily and do more . So I suppose that is my story and I'm happy with it .

    Struggling with weight loss

I’m sorry you are going through this frustrating time. Just throwing a few things out there. I could be widely off the mark but … Are you eating a good balance of food so you get in a range if nutrients? I’m guilty of having the odd yoghurt meal or protein only meal but it’s balanced by the variety of food I eat for my other meals throughout that day. Your body needs a variety of nutrients, vitamins & enzymes to be able to digest & absorb the nutrients, vitamins, etc from what you eat. Do you predominately eat low or no processed foods i.e. a whole food diet? Do you consume a lot of artificial sweeteners? What does your blood test show in relation to vitamins & proteins, glucose, cholesterol, etc.? Have you had a liver scan or other tests? Have you spoken with your surgeon or just the dieticians? Could there be an absorption issue? Maybe your body needs more of certain food types like carbs to function more effectively? The stress & anxiety you’re feeling could be contributing. Certainly adding to your hair loss I’d think. Viscous cycle in play. Our bodies usually work to protect us but sometimes can work against us too. All the best.

    March 23 buddies yet?

My bag is packed, ready to go. Check In at the hospital at 5:30 tomorrow morning. It is hard to believe that I have come this far already and the day is finally here. Although I know this journey has only just begun I have to celebrate the small successes along the way of making the decision to make a change, seeking help, making a true commitment, sticking to the plan, working the program, working on me and recommitting each and every day to keep loving me and working to improve me. We all can do this! Here's to determination! Here's to LIVING! HERE'S TO US! If it is not too difficult or stressful for you, I say go and enjoy yourself but drink your protein prior and enjoy sipping on your teas, broths, etc while they eat and you all socialize. I am on day 10 of 14 and took my son to dinner for his birthday last week with family and did exactly that and was so glad that I went and enjoyed myself. It didn't bother me at all nor anyone else as they understood (many of whom I didn't feel the need to explain the full situation but simply if asked why I wasn't eating I explained I had an upcoming medical procedure and was on a very limited diet. No questions asked. Enjoy yourself! You can't stop living! This is only the beginning of life-long changes when we will not be able to eat as others do. Good luck and be strong. This is your life, live it! ❣️

    The Changing Face

You sure do look younger! Look at that bone structure! It's amazing seeing cheekbones and jaw contours previously hidden, isn't it? I'm still startled by my mine.

    Food Boredom

I gained 100lbs in recovery for an bulimia so I mean this just isn’t true.  You speak about weight gain, and consumption as a compulsion and love affair as if they are inherently the same things and they just aren’t. No one calls alcoholism a love affair with booze, nor is a love affair with food is not inherently the same thing as binge eating disorder or the compulsive eating, addictive behaviors you describe. That’s not love that’s disordered eating and to many people who experience it it feels more like a prison than a romance. Further there are plenty of reasons people gain weight or struggle to lose not limited to medical issues or life long yo-yo dieting socialized in people since childhood resulting in an insurmountably low bmr. It also ignores the idea of a body’s set weight which numerous medical studies have pointed to as a valid hypothesis and part of why wls is one of the only weight loss tools with long term sustainable success. Let’s try to be sensitive that everyone’s story and struggle respect their own personal reflections of it.

    I cheated - now what?

Congratulations on a successful surgery so far! Are you supplementing for protein ? You may feel more satisfied if you increase protein. Carbs sometimes can make you hungrier. It may help to eat separately from your family for a while. It could be really helpful if you eat before you prepare your family’s meals so you are full and no longer tempted to eat off plan. Also please if you can help it, don’t eat off plan this early post op especially if solids aren’t allowed yet.
