    Post Op: Struggling a little

I'm 3 weeks out and still have that. I talked to my Dr and he said that it was very normal to have a ton of energy 1 day and then none the next. He said it's because the body is healing.

    PCOS and MTHFR

I’m 5’6 and 220lbs! Female, 30 years old. Surgery is Aug 29th and I’m SOOOO excited but so nervous that I won’t lose weight because nothing has worked for me in the past. I have PCOS, insulin resistance and MTHFR. Do I have anyone who has been sleeved at my height and weight with good results?! Bonus points if you have PCOS or MTHFR! Thanks!

    Discouraged

Yep, sounds like water gain to me. If I eat too many pickles (salt), I easily gain 5 lbs water overnight and for a second I think distorted self-defeating thoughts. We are all so good at distorting reality. Over generalization, all or nothingb thinking, discounting the positive accomplishments so far... Etc. Anytime your head starts telling you those negative automatic thoughts, just say "stop", and think of the alternative rational/realistic thoughts. I know it can be frustrating but you've done well. Hang in there

I like Dr Weiner too. Don’t follow his diet, too much of a carnivore & can’t give up the animal proteins, but I like his straight forward advice. I agree check out his you tube clips. They’re an amazing resource. https://m.youtube.com/user/DrMatthewWeiner You can post questions which he’ll answer too. I also follow him on instagram. I don’t like artificial sweeteners either (so much information about the negative side effects) & try to avoid them where possible. It’s difficult because it seems like they’re in every damn thing. I know they’re in the yoghurt I eat most days & in my protein bar but that’s really all. Neither are what you would call sweet tasting. I also avoid sugar substitutes & try to keep my added sugar to less than 10g a day. Quite happy to consume naturally occurring sugar lime in dairy, fruit, etc. A lot of my decision was to break any craving or desire for sweet. I’ll have the odd traditionally sweet thing like some dessert or cake but it is very rare & I’m happy to have just a few small bites. In the liquid stage post surgery, I only had one shake a day & ate soup/broths which limited artificial sweeteners to just once a day. After that I dropped the shakes & had yoghurt & yoghurt smoothies instead so artificial sweeteners still only once a day. I should say I make most of what I eat from scratch. It’s the only way to control the ingredients (& avoid processed foods).

Just watch the caffeine as something that could be contributing to the heartburn.

Here I am after my shower. Yep, I can still see it. Pictures don't lie, I guess. I'll have to take pics every month to compare, and so I can actually see the difference.

When your stomach heals and you get onto real foods, you will begin to get full signals. In the beginning my nose would run or I would get sneezes. It takes a while to get used to these signals. Now if I get really cold and get goose bumps on my shins, then I know I have missed my cues and overdone it. Yes I know it sounds bizarre but its true, goose bumps on my shins.

    Two weeks after GB surgery

I am two weeks out following Gastric Bypass surgery. I started my journey at 288lbs. and now I am 270lbs. It’s been trying these last two weeks but, the surgery has worked miracles in my life already! For that I am very grateful. I have never been less than 200lbs in my adult life, and I am anxious about that possibility. Yet, my health takes paramount and is the reason why I made the decision to have the surgery done. I have joined BariatricPal for a bit of insight and inspiration. It is my hope that by the end of this, I may inspire someone too.

Congratulations @STLoser. This is an amazing achievement. As @Starwarsandcupcakes said maintenance can be a lot of trial & error. It took me a while (another 11months) to finally stop losing & for my weight to stabilise. I wasn’t eating a lot when I reached my goal (about 900+/- calories) & it took time for my portion sizes to get closer to a recommended serving size. (I also still wasn’t hungry.) I added snacks - like eventually 5 a day. It seemed crazy & I felt like I was eating all day but it was the only way I could get in those extra calories I needed to slow then stop the loss. (I did this with my dietician.) I don’t eat as many snacks now - usually 3 - because I can eat more at a meal. I stabilised at 1300 calories for a year. I eat more like 1400 now because I had to up my protein to 70g (protein absorption issue). Thanks to also needing a higher dose HRT at the same time I put on 2kgs very quickly but have been steady again for 6 months. Fingers crossed. Just take it slowly as you work out what else you can add to your diet. You may have to keep adjusting until you discover what works for you. So expect some ups & downs. Initially I slowly added extra serves of whole/multi grains (went from 1 to 3 but only about 2 now), a second serve of fruit (1 again now), some extra fat (also reduced some), a few extra vegetables, etc. Kept to my very little sugar/sweet foods & no breads, pasta or rice I established while losing. All the best.

Well, while I haven't ever been diagnosed with PCOS, I am experiencing infertility. I was pregnant once, for 25 weeks and then my babe experienced fetal demise and passed. We got pregnant naturally but not since 2020. I just had RNY on March 8th and I'm hoping we see a positive test in our future, again. Infertility is frustrating and painful. just hang in there. I had the surgery for fertility reasons, too. Hoping this provides my body room for my eggs to release freely and to safely bear another child. Congrats on taking control of your life and your circumstances. I'll be following you and your story ... maybe we both will get our rainbows! edit: Not sure if you have it or have heard of it, but I use an app called Glow to track my cycles. There is a community section on there (similar to this) where you can search for weight loss surgery, vsg, gastric bypass, etc. and read the stories and experiences of people on there. You can, of course, post as well. It's a little more focused on the PCOS and fertility angle than just general weight loss. Food for thought.
