I was given the option of Sleeve vs Bypass but chose bypass because I didn't want the risk of revision if GERD and also wanted a surgery that had better statistics to back up given my history of PCOS. So have you considered of Bypass? I think out of pocket means it may little more expensive for you to get bypass but do give it a thought and do your research to ease your nerves. Also like others mentioned, you shouldn't get intimidated by certain some a experiences. If some have had not so great experience, there are also others out here who have found success and turned a new leaf in their lives. Every experience is different and not everyone is going to describe their detailed medical history here. So best option for you is to speak to your surgical team and see what they have to say about your dilemma.

    Other reasons for surgery

Good to know. I am waiting on the Dr appt. My GI needs to send him his notes etc. But I read a lot about dumping syndrome and not able to eat carbs or get Sick. I want to make sure I’m going to improve n not keep suffering with digestive issues.

    Dr Sanborn - Chattanooga TN

Hi, PB&J! Dr. Cronk did my sister's gastric bypass surgery 3 years ago this July and he did an amazing job! They are both very experienced plus since it's the robotic laparoscopic bypass it's a fast recovery and not much pain at all. We are both very happy that we did the bypass. Hope this helps to put you at ease a bit!

Thanks. I’m pretty normal finally, but not sure how surgery would affect me.

    Funny stories?

Soo, I’m pre op and today is my husband’s birthday, so I’m doing the last supper thing and sitting down at a fancy place for a lovely lunch (venison salad so not too bad…until the tiramisu…but anyway) we were chatting about the journalism course that I have applied to start in July….there are so many options out there for writers….and I suddenly had a brilliant thought “ wow…I could be a food critic”….husband looked at me sideways “if there’s one thing that you won’t be able to do…” “oh, yes. Dam” Anyone else got any funny stories to make us all smile?

    Compression shirts

They make arm sleeves that are technically s designed to protect your skin from the sun but I bet they would work. Just search sun sleeves or UPF sleeves. Oops sorry didn’t realize this was the guys room but hopefully that helps anyways. Lol

I had a sleeve 7 years ago and wish I would have known about the high prevalence of damage due to acid reflux after the sleeve. I now need to revise to bypass to stop the damage from getting worse. If you have any history at all of reflux, I'd be talking to your doctor about doing a bypass instead Sent from my Z6201V using BariatricPal mobile app

    Menopause

I went through menopause already and the night sweats and hot flashes were the only symptom I had BUT they were horrible and embarrassing. The one thing that I found that finally made them go away was Estroven. My sister just started getting them too and it has also helped her. It takes about two months to fully kick in. I'm still waiting to lose enough weight to be cold all the time though. I can't wait til that happens!

    Cheating the consultation scale...

hahah, love this thread. Some things I have heard that worked for others I've talked to at my clinic: Make a bead necklace out of silver lead fishing weights, the oval kind. You can add 3 lbs. with that. Fishing weights in your pockets or attached with safety pin to the inside of your clothes. When they get your height, don't stand straight. You can take off 1/2 to one inch easily, which can be the difference between making the cutoff or no. Right before you go in, drink Water. A 16oz bottle of water is 1 lb. A few days before you go in make yourself constipated - no Fiber and lots of cheese and potatoes. You can hold onto several pounds of poop when you are constipated. Eat Chinese food the night before and drink lots of fluids but no caffeine. The sodium content will make you hold water. Caffeine is a diuretic - makes you pee, and that will get rid of all the water you are trying to hold onto. Now if there were just a way to take off weight that easily!

The esophageal sphincter takes several years to fail. Because the Lap Band and Sleeve operate under a high pressure system, it's something that takes a while to become an issue. It doesn't happen right away. It's something that creeps up on you when you're years out from your surgery date.
