I think I discovered part of my problem, based on what I read from other postes and what others go through at my stage. FOOD DOESN'T BOTHER ME. How can this be??? I guess everyone is different? I don't get pain, I don't feel sick, I don't get nauseous, so I can just eat. It might sound like a dream, but really, it's not. Because if I can eat, I can, well-- eat. and eat whatever I want. And obviously I don't want THAT! It means my control has to come COMPLETELY from my mind, because my body won't stop me. Interestingly, it does protest when I drink a lot, and I do wish it was the reverse. I want to drink! I wish my body protested from food, not liquid. I have a friend who told me before my surgery, "You'll see, you won't even be able to LOOK at the things you liked before. You'll have no inclination to eat them, or graze on things." I was looking forward to that, but it's not the case with me. If I allowed myself to, I could graze on anything all day. These responses were very helpful in giving me a framework, which I am beginning TODAY. (in case you're wondering, my team doesn't really work with this. The nutritionist didn't sit with me and map out a meal plan or anything. Basically she said, you're body will tell you what you can and can't eat. So seeing what others have been eating through the day is helping me form my own meal plan, and hopefully the numbers will start coming down. Because FYI... I haven't been losing weight! I lost 20 lbs between my pre op and the week after, and I've been the same since then, one month out. Not sure how that can be, but the scale don't lie. So thanks for the responses, hopefully this will help me jumpstart.

    Post-op Diet: First Few Weeks

So pre-op diet for me was 11 days of 4 shakes a day and 4, 1 cup servings of non starchy veggies. Then of course the day before was just clear liquids. That was it. Then AFTER surgery it was 2 weeks Full Liquid then 1 week Puree then 2 weeks Soft Foods and then finally, regular foods after that. As more people post you will see some of our plans vary greatly and some are very similar. Strange how that is. LOL

Hello, I’ve been down a few days after surgery. Trying to force myself to eat. Nothing is good to me. Yogurt, Jello, low sodium cream soups and broth’s. I keep getting this weird feeling in my chest after drinking fluids, and eating very yucky feeling. Suffering the past few days with major headaches and HBP. went to emergency last night for headaches and they only gave me Tylenol. I spent $100 for that tidbit of information. Feel nauseated most of the time.

    Need to start over. Ugh

I agree with the above. I know I have to start one thing at a time or I get overwhelmed. I start by drinking water. If I’m drinking all my water I’m taking care of myself. Once that’s an accomplished habit, I include another and keep going.

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hello everyone! I just had my surgery 2 days ago. Post op is a little rough. Any tricks on how to stay hydrated? How long did it take for the pain to go away? Good luck to anyone who is about to get their surgery! And congratulations to everyone who has completed their surgery!

    Food Woes

Try some high protein yoghurt to boost your protein intake. I disliked the shakes too & stopped them from purée stage. I bought & still buy YoPro by Danone (don’t know if it’s available in the US) which has 15 or 20g protein. They used to do a yoghurt drink too of 22 or 30g protein depending upon the size. Not what you’d call sweet - about 6% sugar from the fruit & milk. Watch some protein bars as they are really not much more than candy bars: low protein, high sugar & high calories. Check & compare the nutritional information.

    Straws

YESSS I WAS WAITING FOR THIS THREAD!! lol I’m kidding but this whole notion of no straws drives me absolutely bonkers. most of this I’ve said before (like 94% of my posts) but…. Your stomach doesn’t suck (as in create a vacuum). Your mouth creates the negative pressure needed to draw fluid up a straw. Your stomach doesn’t have anything to do with it. You can prove this very simply (and don’t worry, you’re not even going to swallow the water in this exercise). Take a sip of water from a cup. Don’t swallow it. Just let it sit there. There is now water on the bottom of your mouth and some air up top (even if you try to void all the air out there is still some there). Now spit the water out. Now take a similar amount of water into your mouth via a straw, and again don’t swallow. Just let it sit there… is it really any different than the water you took in via a cup? You can still void out most of the air in your mouth like before. Now spit it out. At no point was your stomach involved in this. Yet we find countless examples online of experts saying things about straws and swallowing air. What actually matters is how you swallow and this applies to eating and drinking (with or without straws). Drinking or eating too fast is the most common reason for swallowing too much air.. we’ve all done it, gulping drinks or wolfing down food… but you can control that independently of whatever utensil or device you use to put stuff in your mouth. That’s what doctors should be telling us (and in fairness most do). Slow it down, take our time, chew food thoroughly, have purpose to our eating and drinking etc… and with those behaviors the amount of air we swallow will naturally be reduced (reduced not eliminated).

    What Led To Revision

Another failed lap band here! I am getting revision to RNY tomorrow morning. I am so excited to get this awful thing out of my body. It did NOTHING to curb my hunger or appetite. All it did was make eating healthy food hard, and make eating slider food rewarding. Couldn't get a chicken breast and a cup of broccoli down because it would get stuck in the band but I could eat a greasy cheeseburger and a milkshake with zero issues. I wish the lap band procedure would be banned all together. It's useless at best, and potentially fatal if it's left alone to cause issues.
