    New Here - Cirrhosis patient

Hi all, I am new here, 41F, from Edmonton, Alberta Canada. Having gastric sleeve in the next 3 months, just waiting on a phone call to make a date with the surgeon! Has anyone here had a sleeve done with liver disease? I have well-compensated cirrhosis, and my consult with the surgeon was this morning. He said I am not a candidate for RNY due to the liver issues, but I am a candidate for a sleeve gastrectomy, and he wants to do it sooner than later as he feels it will slow and possibly reverse some of my liver damage. He said that the benefits of surgery far outweigh the risks, although I'll have to be hospitalized for a minimum 3 days. I am feeling rather nervous, as he said that in the program I am part of, I will be the FIRST patient that they do a sleeve on with cirrhosis, and that makes me worry. Anyhoo, just wanted to make myself known, as I've been lurking/reading/researching for the past 2 weeks...

    Cancelling my surgery again??!!

That’s terrible! I’m glad I live in a state that is allowing medical services to continue.

Yes. She did. They felt this was a “cosmetic thing” and it’s certainly not. I’m overweight and I’m sick of it and anyone who’s been overweight knows the physical and mental toll it takes on the body. I haven’t changed my mind. I was just a little down by the responses I was getting and then I have to remember that I made the choice to share my life changing decisions with those around me. Biiiiiig mistake🤦🏾‍♀️😏

I have a PPO with Humana through my employer and they have nothing to do with weight loss surgery or programs. 🤷🏾‍♀️😏

You may be one of the unlucky ones like me, who did not lose their hunger after surgery - my therapist said that happens to about 20% of her patients. I've never heard of thyroid medications increasing hunger, but talk to your doctor. But... even if you are hungry now, once you get on solid foods, you may be less hungry. Hang in there!

I love going out to eat. It’s different now. I was prepared for this and I looked at it as “I have had 35 years to eat so many delicious amazing things. I’ll still get to eat delicious foods again but the surgery gives me the chance to find other things to love in my life - new passions and experiences that I’ve been too preoccupied and overweight to explore.” I’m nearly 6 weeks out and we have “eaten out” 3 times. Once I got soup, once I got a pulled pork kids meal, and once a chicken wrap, which I basically ate a few bites of chicken out of the wrap. My man is totally comfortable with enjoying his food and trusting that I’m eating what I need to eat. If you have co-dependent food enjoyment, that might be difficult. Yesterday he wanted ice cream and I went with him and didn’t have anything. I wasn’t interested after being off sugar for so long. I don’t tell myself “I can’t have xyz” because that will trigger me to want to binge. I tell myself “I’m choosing ..”
