    1 Year Post-Op Update

49yr Male, 5/18/20 VSG HW 382, SW 309, CW 215 First visit to the surgeon was 6/27/19 and first nutritionist visit was 7/3/2019. Had a long pre-op program then was delayed by COVID-19, so wasn't sleeved until 5/18/20. Lost 73 pre-op, 94 since - for a total of 167 lbs down! I hit 218 in mid Dec 2020 and have been maintaining in the 213-218 range over the past 6 months. I have worked my way up to about 2000 calories/day (200 carb, 78 fat, 125 protein) which seem to be my maintenance diet based on my BMR and activity level. When I get towards 218, I cut it back for a week or two and settle back down to nearer 215. Bonus for me is I have never vomited even once since having the surgery. That makes me a unicorn based on what I read here on BP! I had an InBody scan at my 1 year post op visit and had gained some muscle and lost fat from my 6 month visit, so that was encouraging. It shows me at ~25% body fat right now, which I can work on. I tend to walk about 20-30 minutes about 5x/week plus 2-3 20 minute strength training sessions per week. Nothing too extreme on the exercise front. It's all about calorie intake for me. You can't outrun your fork! We started working back in the office this week and as I emerge from the "COVID cocoon", I'm dealing with lots of comments. So far they are positive, so that is helpful. We have started going out to eat some, which has taken some adjustments to my meticulous meal planning tendencies (380+ day MFP streak). As long as I can check out the menu in advance and decide what to order, I have done well. The next challenge is work travel, conferences and family events where junk food is constantly available. I have worked hard over the past nearly 2 years to build good habits and now they will be tested. Here is a before and after shot for your viewing pleasure. Next step is likely plastics later this year. Going to do a consult this summer and come up with a plan. That's all for now. If I can do this, you can too. Stick to the plan, build good habits, proteins first, plenty of water, move around - you know the drill.

    Cleaning up diet Pre Surgery

Hey there! So after meeting with the nutritionist for the first time, she gave me tips and recommendations for cleaning up my diet pre surgery. Just to clarify I am not pre op- just pre surgery in the 6 months insurance approval process. My question is....did anyone strictly change their diet right away after the nutritionists suggestions or did it take you a while to clean up your diet before pre op?

I think I lost about 20 lbs on it, but that's going to vary a lot between people. and the two weeks is torture enough - no way would I want to do it longer. the purpose of it is to shrink your liver so it's easier for them to get in there and do the surgery. I don't think they really care how much weight you lose (although you'll lose some...)

    Sore Throat.....But On Outside

I had a very sore throat from a previous surgery. The issue was difficulty in intubating me. It could also be from the angle your head may have been placed at. Glad it's better.

Hi Everyone, I’m officially 6 weeks post gastric bypass and I’m feeling great! Starting weight pre-liquid diet was 305lbs. After 3 week liquid diet on day of surgery I weighed in at 277lbs. Today, I’m sitting at 243lbs! I was on the post op liquid diet for 2 weeks then semi-solid for 1 week. 4th week out I started on full solids and have kept everything down. I’ve had pizza, subs, burgers, hotdogs, steak, pork, ribs, wings etc and have never felt nauseous or thrown anything back up. Of course I can only have bites/ounces at a time but it’s great to be back on regular food! With the doctors blessing I golfed 4.5 weeks out and got in 13 holes before it hurt to much to finish, but finished a full round of 18 the next week. Even rode my bike 6km yesterday with the kids....which is who I did this journey in the first place! I’ve had type 2 diabetes for 5 years and have stopped taking meds about 3 weeks ago (doctors suggested) as my resting sugars have not gone over 6.5 in weeks. I’ve read lots of posts on here steering inquiring people the wrong way with horror stories of months/years of not eating regular food and/or not being able to do physical activities months/years post op. My answer is listen to your doctor and your body and do what’s best for you. Everyone is different and the post op experiences are going to be vastly different. Thanks and looking forward to more weight loss and more physical activities with my kids! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Just be patient. It is impossible to eat as few calories as we eat post surgery and not lost weight. Your body is just adjusting. I have learned from many others on this site that happens to most of us within the first month and is often around week three and called the three week stall for that reason. If you do a search for the term you will see how common it is. Stick to your plan and you will be losing before you know it.

    Post OP tip

See picture! so I went home on Easter Sunday and thought Premier Protein 1 gram of sugar , 160 calories, 30 protein fit all the requirements, although it did some requirements not all of them so with this surgery you must follow to the letter. the only one true protein shake that I needed was Ensure Max Protein Shake this is considered a clear protein shake and I have been able to tolerate it. the other one I poured a 1 ounce cup and sipped less than 1/4 of it and immediately my stomach did not tolerate it, kept coming back up my throat. so I hope this helps you guys when you are post OP, remember all protein shakes are not created equal.

    Soft stage

This is fruit I was allowed to eat during the soft stage. But I wasn't able to eat much fruit and still meet my protein goals. Fruits/vegetables Canned fruit (in own juices or water packed) Soft, fresh fruit without skins and chewed well (berries, peaches, plums) Bananas Cooked or canned vegetables Avoid raw, fibrous vegetables like broccoli and Brussels sprouts. Avoid skins and seeds.
