    Help!

well, people have died from tonsillectomies and wisdom tooth extraction, but then...how many people are we talking about? Your chances of dying are higher than THAT, but the mortality rate is 0.3% of dying from gastric bypass, and lower for the sleeve (I can't remember the rate for the sleeve, other than it's lower). So you have at least a 99.7% chance of NOT dying, which I'd say are excellent odds. I think a lot of people - esp oldsters like me - remember the old intestinal bypasses and other weight-reducing surgeries they did 30+ years ago, and yes, those WERE risky. But the surgeries they do now are very different - and they're really no more risky than having your gall bladder out. They're safer than hip replacement surgeries, which are done every day. just do your research. I was very surprised when I did - my perceptions of weight loss surgery were proven wrong, and I'm so glad I had it done.

    Facial wrinkles

I noticed it too. It is happening to me as we speak. People always used to tell me how young I looked, even though I was overweight. Now, with the weight loss I have noticed how I do not get the same compliments. I am only 6 months out. I look like I have aged about 10 years.

    Caloric Deficit

My ideal amount of calories fluctuates. I have a scale that tells me what my BMR is based on weight/body fat/muscle mass, hydration, etc. It currently says around 1560 so I *try* to keep this in mind when I make choices throughout the day if I’m trying to lose a little. Technically, I think I could go over this amount by a couple of hundred calories and be fine but I would need to track for an extended period of time to be certain. That sounds like a lot of work to me 😢 You may need to come up with a way to figure out your needs, but a few things to keep in mind: Are you at or close to goal/normal weight? That can slow the process down a lot. Do you know your weightloss vs maintenance calorie goals ? If you haven’t gained or lost, you are likely in maintenance. COVID/Quarantine stressors have affected a lot of people. Some people have lost but plenty of people have gained weight as well from stressful times. You maybe maintaining. Any other major life changes like medication of menopause, subsequent illness can cause plateaus and even gains. I hope that helped a little ❤️

    Caloric intake

they never gave us a calorie range - we were supposed to focus on protein and fluids only the first few weeks. Although I know after the first month or so, a lot of people seem to be in the 600-800 range for awhile - and then gradually up from there.

    6 Month Follow Up

Had my 6 month follow up today with the nutritionist, and surgeon (it will be 6 months tomorrow). They were both extremely happy with my success. I was told that I have done exceptionally well thus far, and to keep up the good work. I have lost 76 lbs., and 77% of my body fat!! All my labs came back good, except I am anemic, but have always been. So now I have to take the bariatric vitamins with 45 mg of iron. I was told to do was to add in some exercise, just light stuff with the tension bands. Only 15 minutes, 3 days a week, then slowly work my way up. I have fibro, so I have to be careful or I will be in too much pain to do anything at all. I am so happy! My journey is far from over, but I am well on my way to being a healthy, productive, active person. My only regret, if any, is that I wish I had this done 10 yrs. ago.

    Gastric Sleevr Vs. Bypass

Well I never had GERD, and really thats the primary reason for a revision. I may develop it later on, but only 30% of sleevers have this issue. My sleeve was done right, so it definitely isnt an inferior surgery. Actually, the weight loss between GB and GS is very very similar at 5 years post op. Because it is so similar and the rate of complications with a sleeve is lower than with a bypass, this is why my doc recommended it. Weight regain is not a side effect of the surgery (either one...regains happen with bypass just as often), but rather choices made by the patient. I am still losing. I'm confident in myself and my choices. I will check back in July 😊
